What is Animal Garden - Sea Otter?
3 parts
Animal Garden - Sea Otter adds tamable sea otters that fight and protect you when you need them. This pack includes version 1.1.1 of the mod, built for NeoForge. It also needs AquariusLibs installed.[1][2]
Taming and commands
You can tame, tempt and breed sea otters with any fish item. The mod uses an item tag for its food, so the accepted items can be changed through a data pack tag file.[1]
Once an otter is tamed, you can switch it between three behaviors:[1]
- Wandering: it will not follow you.[1]
- Sitting: it lies down and waits until it is attacked or gets another command.[1]
- Following: it follows its owner.[1]
How they behave
If one otter is damaged, the others help protect their kin. If there is fish, either as an item or as a mob, nearby, an otter will go and eat it to restore a bit of health. Sometimes it will attack a fish even at full health.[1]
Otters move in groups. When several are close together, one is picked as the leader and the rest follow it. Baby otters only follow their parent and attach themselves to it.[1]
Looks and spawning
Adults come in 4 color variations. The default has a white head and a brown body, and there is a chance of a dark-colored one. A rare albino variant with a white coat and pink eyes spawns with a 3% chance, and there is also a chance of a leucistic otter with just a white coat. Babies are light brown.[1]
You will find them in the ocean and cold ocean biomes. By default, wild sea otters despawn when you get too far away. The exceptions are otters that are tamed, were fed by someone, or have a name tag.[1]
Before a new otter spawns, the mod checks the surrounding area for other otters. If there are more than the allowed maximum, it skips the spawn to prevent overspawning. The size of that area and the maximum are configurable.[1]
How do you get started with Animal Garden - Sea Otter?
3 parts
Animal Garden - Sea Otter is a creature mod, not a crafting mod. It adds the Sea Otter, a tamable mob that fights and protects you when you need it. So your first steps are about finding an otter and winning it over, not about building anything.[1][3]
First, find a sea otter
According to the mod's project page, sea otters spawn in the ocean and cold ocean biomes. They move slowly on land, so meet them in the water if you can. They also move in groups: if several are nearby, one becomes the leader and the others follow it. Baby otters just follow their parent.[1]
Most adults are brown with a white head, and some spawn dark. The project page also lists rarer coats: an albino variant with a white coat and pink eyes (a 3% chance) and a leucistic variant with just a white coat. Those spawn rules are the mod's own description, and the sources here do not show whether this pack changes them.[1]
If you would rather skip the search, the mod has a Sea Otter Spawn Egg.[3]
Next, tame it with fish
Any fish item can tame, tempt and breed a sea otter. The project page says the food list comes from an item tag, so a pack or data pack can change which items count. The sources here do not show whether this pack does.[1]
Then pick a behavior
Once an otter is tamed, you can switch it between three behaviors:[1]
- Wandering: the otter will not follow you.[1]
- Sitting: the otter lies down and waits until it is attacked or gets another behavior command.[1]
- Following owner: the otter comes along with you.[1]
Unverified The sources here show no crafting recipes for this mod's items, no quests that involve it, and no config files for it in the pack. If you want to know whether the pack changes spawning or persistence, the sources do not say.
How does Animal Garden - Sea Otter work?
5 parts
The mod's page describes Animal Garden - Sea Otter as adding tamable sea otters, and it mentions no machines, multiblocks, power or fluid systems. So the mechanics here are about spawning, taming and how the Sea Otter behaves.[1][3]
Where sea otters spawn
In this pack, the mod's spawn data adds the sea otter to the biomes in its own biome tag, which lists only the ocean and the cold ocean. Each spawn entry has a weight of 10 and a group size of exactly 1, so you meet them one at a time rather than in herds.[4][5]
The mod's page says that before a new otter spawns, the game checks for other otters around that spot and skips the spawn if there are too many. This is meant to prevent overspawning. By default, it says, wild otters despawn when they are too far away, unless they are tamed, have been fed by someone or have a nametag.[1]
If you just want one without hunting for it, the mod also has a Sea Otter Spawn Egg.[3]
Unverified The mod's page describes config options for the overspawn check area, the maximum count and an "isAlwaysPersistent" setting. The sources here include no config file for this mod in the pack, so the pack's actual values for these are not shown.
Taming and breeding
The mod's page says you can tame, tempt and breed sea otters with any fish item. In this pack the food tag lists these items:[1][6]
The mod's page says this food list lives in an item tag file, so a pack or data pack can change it. The list above is what the mod ships with.[1][6]
Behavior after taming
A tamed otter fights and protects you when you are in need. You can switch it between three behaviors:[1]
- Wandering: according to the mod's page, the otter will not follow you.[1]
- Sitting: the mod's page says it lies down and waits until it is attacked or gets another behavior command.[1]
- Following: the mod's page says it follows its owner.[1]
How otters act on their own
- The mod's page says that if an otter is damaged, others of its kin help protect it.[1]
- According to the page, if there is fish or a fish mob nearby, an otter goes to eat it and restores a bit of health. Sometimes it attacks a fish even at full health.[1]
- The page says otters move in groups: when several are nearby, one is picked as the leader and the others follow it.[1]
- The page says baby otters only follow their parent and attach themselves to it.[1]
Variants
Baby otters are light brown. Adults can have 4 color variations. The default has a white head and brown body, with a chance of a dark one. A rare albino variant has a white coat and pink eyes, with a 3% chance. There is also a chance of leucism, which gives a white coat only.[1]
The mod's damage immunity tag is empty in this pack, so it gives otters no special damage immunities.[7]
The mod's page says it requires AquariusLibs to be installed.[1]
How do you progress through Animal Garden - Sea Otter?
2 parts
For Animal Garden - Sea Otter, the data files describe a wildlife mod rather than a tier ladder. So this section covers where you find the sea otter and what it eats.[4][5][6]
Where sea otters spawn
The mod adds sea otter spawns to the ocean and cold ocean biomes (minecraft:ocean and minecraft:cold_ocean). If you want to meet one, head out on the water and look in those biomes.[4][5]
The spawn entry has a weight of 10, and each spawn is exactly 1 otter (the minimum and maximum group size are both 1). Expect to find them one at a time rather than in herds.[4]
What counts as food
The mod's food tag lists these fish:[6]
