What is Xaero's World Map?

2 parts

Xaero's World Map adds a self-writing, full-screen map of everything you've explored. Instead of crafting and filling paper maps by hand, the map fills in as you travel. It works in singleplayer, multiplayer and on Realms.[1]

The pack includes version 1.34.1, built for Forge on Minecraft 1.18.2.[2]

Who it's for

If you explore a lot and want to see where you've been, this is for you. Press M to open the map, drag it with your mouse and zoom with the mouse wheel. The controls are listed in a tooltip on the map screen, and many of them can be customized.[1]

It's mostly client-sided. Installing it on a server is optional and only adds extras like world identification. It also works as a standalone mod, but it's a lot better with Xaero's Minimap. The two integrate: the minimap shows chunks from the world map, and the world map shows your minimap waypoints. You can create, edit and teleport to waypoints without leaving the map screen.[1]

Handy features

  • Multiple maps on the same server address, which you can switch between manually or automatically.[1]
  • Cave dimension support, for example the Nether.[1]
  • "Footsteps" that show your most recent path.[1]
  • Terrain shading customization and an optional vanilla maps look.[1]
  • Export of your map as a PNG image. It tries to export the whole map, so it may fail if the map is millions of blocks across.[1]
  • Chunk claims and ally players from Open Parties and Claims, with the ability to claim or forceload chunks from the map.[1]
  • Server owners can limit map use, for example by requiring an item such as Compass in your hotbar or equipped. This is a mod option, and the sources don't show whether the pack uses it.[1]
Watch out: The mod's author says not to use XaeroPlus with this mod. It isn't affiliated with the author and is said to cause critical, untrackable bugs and crashes.[1]

Unverified The sources don't show where the mod fits in the pack's progression, so nothing is confirmed about that here.

How do you get started with Xaero's World Map?

3 parts

Good news: there's nothing to craft to get going. Xaero's World Map adds a self-writing fullscreen map to your client, so it starts recording what you explore from the moment you load in. Here's what to do first.[1]

Unverified The sources I was given don't show any in-pack recipes or quests for this mod, so I can't point you to a first item to craft. If you find one in the pack, treat it as unconfirmed until it's added here.

Your first steps

  1. Press M to open the map screen. Drag the map around with your mouse and zoom with the mouse wheel. The controls are listed in a tooltip on the map screen, and you can customize a lot of them.[1]
  2. Explore. The map writes itself as you go, and it works in singleplayer, multiplayer and on Realms.[1]
  3. If you're playing singleplayer on an older world, optimize it first (Singleplayer, Edit, Optimize World) for the Minecraft version you're on. Map generation takes a lot longer on unoptimized world saves, and you should repeat this after every Minecraft update.[1]
  4. Try the on-map waypoint menu by clicking the icon in the bottom right corner of the map screen. It lists your waypoints, lets you filter them by name, and lets you change the current waypoint set. This menu arrived in version 1.14.0 of the mod. I can't confirm from the sources which mod version this pack ships.[1]

Pairing it with the minimap

The world map works on its own, but it's a lot better with Xaero's Minimap. The minimap displays chunks provided by the world map, and the world map displays your minimap waypoints. You can create, edit and teleport to waypoints without leaving the map screen.[1]

Teleporting and multiplayer notes

Right-click map teleportation can be turned off. Once it's disabled, you can only turn it back on through the world-specific config file in the XaeroWorldMap folder. Waypoint teleportation is configured separately, through the full waypoint menu options, and the minimap handles it.[3]

The mod is mostly client-sided. Installing it on the server is optional and only adds some extra features, like world identification.[1]

Watch out: Don't use XaeroPlus with this mod. The mod's author says it isn't affiliated with them and causes critical untrackable bugs and crashes. They also say it is allegedly affiliated with a server griefing group, which could put your server builds at risk.[1]

How does Xaero's World Map work?

5 parts

This one is a bit different from the machine-heavy mods you may be used to. Xaero's World Map is a self-writing, full-screen map, not a machine or a multiblock. It has no power, fluids or item automation to set up, and the sources I was given don't describe any. What follows is how its systems actually behave.[1]

How the map works

The map writes itself as you explore, unlike a manual paper map. It works in singleplayer, multiplayer and on Realms, and you can keep several maps for the same server address and switch between them manually or automatically. Press M to open the map, drag it with the mouse and zoom with the mouse wheel.[1]

The mod is mostly client-sided. Installing it on the server is optional and only adds some extra features, such as world identification.[1]

It also supports cave dimensions like the Nether, an optional vanilla maps mode that makes the map look like paper maps, terrain shading customization, and footsteps that show your most recent path.[1]

Minimap and waypoint integration

The mod is a lot better with Xaero's Minimap. The minimap displays chunks provided by the world map, and the world map displays waypoints from the minimap. You can create, edit and teleport to waypoints without leaving the map screen.[1]

Click the icon in the bottom right corner of the map screen to open the on-map waypoint menu (added in mod version 1.14.0). It lists your waypoints from the rendered sets and lets you filter them by name. You can also toggle disabled waypoints, toggle rendering all sets, and change the current waypoint set. Hovering a waypoint in the menu highlights it on the map.[1]

Teleporting from the map

Right-click map teleportation can be switched on or off. If you disable it, you can only turn it back on through the world-specific config file in the XaeroWorldMap folder, so think twice before you flip it off.[3]

Waypoint teleportation is a separate setting. It is configured through the minimap, in the full waypoint menu options.[3]

Controlling who can use the map

Server owners get a few ways to restrict the map. There are server-sided configs with an in-game UI screen that control in real time how players can use the mod. These can be based on ranks or permissions, and FTB Ranks, Odyssey Roles, LuckPerms and general permission APIs are supported.[1]

There is also a potion effect, xaeroworldmap:no_world_map, which controls whether a player can use the world map. It is neutral by default. Append _harmful to the effect ID, as in xaeroworldmap:no_world_map_harmful, to get a harmful-type version.[1]

You can also bind map access to an item. Adding mapItemId:minecraft:compass anywhere in the config file means the map only works while you have the Compass in your hotbar or equipped.[1]

Extras

  • Open Parties and Claims support: the map shows chunk claims and ally players, and lets you claim or forceload chunks straight from the map.[1]
  • Resource pack support: changing resource packs makes the whole world map regenerate.[1]
  • PNG export: the mod tries to export the whole map, so it might fail if the map is millions of blocks in length.[1]
  • Performance settings are available if you need them, though the defaults should perform well in most cases.[1]
Watch out: The mod's author says not to use XaeroPlus with this mod, because it is not affiliated with them and causes critical untrackable bugs and crashes.[1]
Tip: If you play singleplayer, optimize your world (Singleplayer - Edit - Optimize World) after every Minecraft update. Generating maps from unoptimized world saves takes a lot longer.[1]

Unverified No config files or recipes for this mod were available for the pack, so I can't confirm whether it changes any defaults. The behavior above describes the mod itself, not verified pack settings.

How does Xaero's World Map work with other mods?

1 part

I couldn't find any in-pack recipes or quests that connect this map mod to other mods. So there's nothing pack-specific to show here, and I won't invent any. What I can tell you is what the mod's own project page says it works with.[1]

Unverified No cross-mod recipes or quests involving Xaero's World Map were found for this pack. Whether the companion mods below are installed in this pack was not confirmed from the sources, so check your mod list before relying on these features.

What the mod supports on its own

  • Xaero's Minimap: the minimap displays chunks provided by the world map, and the world map displays waypoints from the minimap. You can create, edit and teleport to waypoints without leaving the map screen. The page says the world map works as a separate mod but is a lot better with the minimap.[1]
  • Open Parties and Claims: the world map shows chunk claims and ally players from that mod. You can also claim or forceload chunks directly from the map.[1]
  • Better PVP: the page says the minimap integration also works with this mod.[1]
  • Permission and rank systems: server-side configs let you control how players on your server use the mod, and you can base this on ranks or permissions. The page lists support for FTB Ranks, Odyssey Roles, LuckPerms and general permission APIs.[1]
Watch out: The mod's author says not to use XaeroPlus with this mod. They describe it as unaffiliated and say it causes critical untrackable bugs and crashes. They also say it is allegedly affiliated with a server griefing group, which could put your server builds at risk.[1]

Which Xaero's World Map config options matter?

1 part

I don't have the pack's config files for Xaero's World Map, so I can't tell you which options this pack changed from the mod defaults or what values it uses. Rather than guess at option names or numbers, I'm keeping this section short.[1]

What the mod page confirms

  • The map screen opens with M according to the mod's own description. You move the map with the mouse and zoom with the mouse wheel, and a tooltip on the map screen lists the controls. The page also says you can customize a lot of them, so check your keybinds if M does nothing in your game.[1]
  • The mod is mostly client-sided. Installing it on the server is optional and only adds extras such as world identification.[1]
  • Automatic multiple world detection on servers is described as optional, and you can keep several maps for the same server address and switch between them manually or automatically.[1]
Watch out: The mod author says not to use XaeroPlus with this mod. They report that it is not affiliated with them and causes critical untrackable bugs and crashes.[1]
Tip: If you play a singleplayer world, the mod page recommends optimizing it (Singleplayer, Edit, Optimize World) for your Minecraft version. Unoptimized saves take a lot longer to generate maps.[1]

Unverified Which options this pack changed from the mod defaults, and the pack's exact values for them, could not be confirmed because no config files for this mod were provided. The M key and the other behaviour above come from the mod's general description and may differ if the pack rebinds or overrides anything.

What changed in Xaero's World Map between versions?

This pack ships Xaero's World Map 1.34.1, built for Forge 1.18.2. The map mod has been in the pack since All the Mods - Gravitas 1.1 or earlier, so it is a long-standing part of the modpack.[2]

The mod's own changelog entries I was given cover these releases: 1.30.1, 1.30.2, 1.30.3, 1.30.6, 1.31.0, 1.33.0, 1.33.1 and 1.34.1. The version the pack uses, 1.34.1, is the newest of them.[2][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11]

Unverified The text of those changelogs was not available, so what changed in each release is unverified. There are also no pack changelog entries for this mod, so I can't say whether any Gravitas release changed its version or behaviour.

We can't match this mod to the pack's item list: it registers as xaeroworldmap, and the pack's recipe dump has nothing under that name. That means we found nothing, not that the mod adds nothing. Search the item browser
