What is Thermal Expansion?
3 parts
Thermal Expansion is the original mod in the Thermal Series, going all the way back to Minecraft 1.2.5. It's the series' "industrial base": energy generation, energy storage and resource processing. The project describes itself as a server-friendly, content-rich blend of magic and technology.[1]
This pack includes Thermal Expansion 9.2.1, built for Minecraft 1.18.2.[2]
Why it matters
The mod's own page says there's a lot of stuff for both newcomers and veterans. The Thermal Series has a long history in modded Minecraft. The Forge Energy system grew out of Redstone Flux, and features like side reconfiguration, advanced redstone control and blue/orange input coloring started with the series. If you've used those in other mods, you've already seen Thermal's influence.[1]
How it fits together
Thermal is modular, so a pack can include only the parts it wants. Expansion is one module. The others are Foundation (basics and resources), Cultivation (farming and foods), Dynamics (logistics and transport), Innovation (advanced power tools and gadgets), Integration (modded compatibility enhancements) and Locomotion (rails and minecarts). The whole series requires CoFH Core.[1]
This pack's mod list only confirms that Thermal Expansion is included, so don't assume the other modules are here.[2]
Configuration
The mod has a client config and a server config. The client file is thermal-client.toml in the config folder. The server file is thermal-server.toml, which sits in the serverconfigs folder of each world. On a dedicated server, that folder is inside the world folder. If you copy the server file into the defaultsconfig folder, its settings apply to all newly created worlds.[1]
How do you get started with Thermal Expansion?
2 parts
Thermal Expansion is the original mod of the Thermal Series, and it covers the industrial base of the series: energy generation, storage, and resource processing. Expect it to be your machine-and-power backbone as you progress.[1]
The Thermal Series is modular, so the mod needs CoFH Core to run. Other parts of the series, like Thermal Foundation for basics and resources, are separate modules.[1]
Where the settings live
- Client settings are in thermal-client.toml in your config folder.[1]
- Server settings are in thermal-server.toml, inside the serverconfigs folder of your world save. On a dedicated server, that is the serverconfigs folder in the world folder.[1]
- If you copy the server file into your defaultsconfig folder, those settings apply to all newly created worlds.[1]
What to craft first
Unverified The sources for this pack don't confirm any recipes, quests, item ids or in-game descriptions for this mod, so I can't give you a verified crafting order or point to recipe entries yet. Check the in-game recipe viewer for the first machines and power items, and use this page again once the pack's recipes are documented. This site does hold All the Mods - Gravitas's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.
How does Thermal Expansion work?
3 parts
This is the short version, because the sources for this mod only describe it in broad strokes. Thermal Expansion is the original mod of the Thermal Series. It is the series' "industrial base", and it covers energy generation, energy storage and resource processing.[1]
Machine handling conventions
The Thermal Series pioneered several features that are now common across modded Minecraft. The project page names side reconfiguration, advanced redstone control and blue/orange input coloring. If you have used these in other mods, expect the same ideas in Thermal's machines.[1]
Power also traces back to Thermal. According to the project page, the Forge Energy system was built from Redstone Flux, which was Thermal's original energy system.[1]
Where this mod sits in the Thermal Series
The Thermal Series is modular, so the mod only covers part of the picture. The project page lists separate modules for basics and resources, farming and foods, logistics and transport, advanced power tools and gadgets, compatibility enhancements, and rails and minecarts. It also says the series requires CoFH Core.[1]
What the sources don't cover
The project page's feature section is marked as a work in progress, and no other source was available for this mod. I can't give you in-depth detail on individual machines, multiblocks, fluid or item automation, or the processing rates and power numbers in this pack.[1]
Unverified Which machines and generators the pack includes, their exact power use and output, how their side configuration and redstone control are set up, and any pack-specific changes are all unverified. The sources contain no guidebook text, tooltips, recipes or config files for this mod in the pack.

Items and blocks
We can't match this mod to the pack's item list: it registers as thermal_expansion, and the pack's recipe dump has nothing under that name. That means we found nothing, not that the mod adds nothing. Search the item browser
