What is Starcatcher?

2 parts

Same as in the FTB Evolution 2 1.1.0 guide

Starcatcher is a fishing overhaul. It adds a skill-based fishing mini-game, and your catches are recorded in a catalogue that tracks your best ones. There are 100+ new fish, each restricted by things like biome, weather, daytime and elevation, so some of them are harder to find than they look.[1]

This pack includes version 3.3.6 of the mod for NeoForge, and it has been in the pack since 1.0.2 or earlier.[2]

What it adds

  • Hooks, bobbers and baits for your rod, plus tackle boxes to store fish and swap rod attachments. For Legendary fish, using the correct attachments matters.[1]
  • Trophies, secret messages and the message-in-a-bottle, which are there to reward progress and exploration.[1]
  • Aquariums and a display block to show off your catches. Fish placed in an aquarium are scaled by their size and weight percentile.[1]
  • Fishing tournaments to challenge your friends, and cosmetics to dress up your rod.[1]
  • A selling bin feature, which the mod page describes as turning your catches into money through wd's Selling Bin, with bigger fish selling better.[1]

Good to know

For version 3 and above, the mod lists Tide 2 and Create as the mods whose fish are added to the catalogue. Fishing rods from other mods do not work with Starcatcher.[1][2]

The mod's own guide book does not display recipes, so the mod page recommends using EMI or JEI alongside it. It also has an in-game config menu with accessibility options, such as disabling the mini-game completely or enabling FTB Team catch-sharing.[1]

How do you get started with Starcatcher?

4 parts

Starcatcher adds a skill-based fishing minigame, plus tackle boxes, baits, hooks and bobbers. Here is the order I'd go in: first the guide, then the rod, then somewhere to keep your attachments, then the attachments themselves.[1]

Step one: Starcatcher's Guide

Start with the Starcatcher's Guide. The mod's guide screen has an index with entries like The Basics, Hooks, Bobbers & Baits, and Tackle Boxes & Rod Attachments, so it's a handy way to learn the systems as you go.[3]

Step two: Starcatcher's Rod

Next, make the Starcatcher's Rod. There's a dedicated recipe for it in this pack.[4]

Step three: a tackle box

Tackle boxes store your fish, hooks, bobbers and baits, and they are how you change your rod's attachments. The tackle box recipes shown for this mod are Tackle Box Boats, with a version for each wood type. The oak one is a simple place to begin: Oak Tackle box Boat.[1][3][4]

    Recipe id: starcatcher:oak_tackle_box_boat

Step four: hooks, bobbers and bait

Hooks, bobbers and baits are attached to your rod through a tackle box. They give you modifiers, from shorter lure time to buffs that reduce the minigame's difficulty. Use the right attachments when hunting Legendary fish.[1][3]

Good first picks are a Bobber, a Copper Hook and some Cherry Bait.[4]

This recipe makes 4 Cherry Bait.

Tip: Worms work as bait too, and each one has different fishing modifiers. The Almighty Worm lets you catch fishable entities alive, and it has a crafting recipe in this pack.[3][4]
Tip: Your catches are cookable: Cooked Starcaught Fish has smelting, smoking and campfire recipes in the pack. Eating Starcaught Fish gives you Fish Bones.[3][4]

    How does Starcatcher work?

    8 parts

Starcatcher is not a machine mod. There is no power, no fluid piping and no item pipes here. Its systems are a skill-based fishing minigame, rod attachments, aquariums and a few collectible and decorative blocks. This section walks through how each one works, as far as the pack's sources show.[1]

    The fishing minigame

You need Starcatcher's own rod to catch anything beyond plain salmon or cod. Once a fish bites you play a minigame. Tougher fish will not give in easily, so you have to hit all of their sweetspots before you can reel them in. The mod adds more than 100 fish, each restricted by things like biome, weather, time of day and elevation.[1][3]

The in-game guide shows each fish's conditions as a checklist: biome, time of day, dimension, elevation, light, luck, moon phase, structure and weather. Use it to work out why a fish is not biting.[3]

Trophies work differently. They bite your hook instantly once all of their conditions are met.[3]

    Tackle boxes and rod attachments

The tackle box is the centre of the system. It stores your fish, hooks, bobbers and baits, and it is where you swap your rod's attachments. Attachments give modifiers, from shorter lure time to buffs that reduce the minigame's difficulty. Using the correct attachments matters when you hunt Legendary fish.[1][3]

Worms behave differently from other baits, because each worm gives its own fishing modifiers. The Almighty Worm is the one that lets you catch a fish entity alive. A bucket used as bait lets you catch a bucketable fish in the bucket.[3]

    Targeted Bait (starcatcher)

      Recipe id: starcatcher:targeted_bait

One craft makes 16 Targeted Bait.

The pack also has ten tackle box boat recipes, such as the Birch Tackle box Boat and the Bamboo Tackle box Raft.[4]

      Enchantments and effects

Vanilla enchantments and effects feed into the minigame through data files in the mod's jar. Luck of the Sea adds a 0.02 chance to spawn treasure. Lure shortens the wait for a bite: it multiplies both the minimum and maximum lure ticks by 0.95. The Luck status effect multiplies your handle speed by 1.25.[5][6]

      Treasures

Each rarity tier of fish entry draws treasure from the vanilla fishing treasure loot table, and fishing rods are blacklisted from it. Some specific fish carry a smithing template as their treasure. For example, the azure crystalback minnow gives the Azure Crystal Skin Smithing Template.[7]

Smithing templates are tied to rod skins. Data in the jar maps templates such as clear, colorful, frog, kimbe, king, pearl, survivor and valley to their matching skins.[8]

      Aquariums

The Aquarium is a multi-block for showing off your catches. Fish placed inside are scaled by their size and weight percentile. You can customise the tank with decorations. Dead fish do not go in an aquarium.[1][3]

      AquariumMod recipe

      Crafting Shaped

      8 × any glass panes

      Recipe id: starcatcher:aquarium

What you hold when you right-click the tank decides what happens:[9]

      • An empty bucket removes a fish.[9]
      • A pickaxe builds a cave and a shovel builds a castle.[9]
      • Sand, red sand, gravel, stone, kelp and seagrass are placed as decoration.[9]
      • Clams and conches can be placed as decoration.[9]
      • A Starcaught bucket or Starcaught lava bucket places a fish in the tank.[9]

      Clams and pearls

Clams are generated on beaches as vegetal decoration, with a placement count of 3 and a requirement that the surface water depth is 0. A clam placed on sand slowly creates pearls. Once it has opened, you click it to harvest a pearl. The pearl smithing template can rarely drop when you collect pearls.[3][10][11]

      Messages, displays and cooking

You can make a Bottled Letter to share a message. The message screen uses a different background in the Overworld, the Nether and the End.[1][4][12]

      Bottled LetterMod recipe

      Bottled Letter (starcatcher)

        Recipe id: starcatcher:bottled_letter

Display blocks can show your guide book and starcaught fish. Sign the book first to bind your collection to it. An unsigned book shows the viewing player's own collection instead of yours.[3]

Starcaught fish can be cooked into Cooked Starcaught Fish in a furnace, a smoker or a campfire. Eating Starcaught fish leaves Fish Bones.[3][4]

        Settings and customisation

The mod has an in-game config menu with global multipliers for sweetspot vanishing and moving rates, missing penalty, total fish HP, handle speed and swimaway speed. It can also disable the minigame, hide catches until found, change the min and max bite ticks, and disable the tackle box item restriction. Datapacks can change fishable entries, treasure pools, per-entry difficulty and which items act as hooks, bobbers and baits.[1]

Unverified The exact modifier each hook, bobber and bait gives is set in data/starcatcher/data_maps/item/modifiers.json, and this pack ships no Starcatcher config file. The sources here do not show either, so the pack's actual modifier values and minigame multipliers are unverified.

How do you progress through Starcatcher?

        4 parts

Same as in the FTB Evolution 2 1.1.0 guide

Starcatcher adds a lot of fishing gear, and in this pack all of it comes from crafting recipes. The sources here do not give a tier ranking or a set order for working through the gear, so this section groups it by what each item is and shows the in-pack recipes where they matter.[13]

        Rod, hooks and bobbers

The Starcatcher's Rod has a shapeless recipe in the pack, listed as rod_from_vanilla. The block below shows it exactly.[13]

Several baits have extra recipes with different yields. Legendary Bait makes 16 from the legendary fish recipe and 64 from the enchanted golden apple recipe. Meteorological Bait also has an epic fishes recipe that makes 8. Sculk Bait has two recipes that make 16 each, one from a sculk catalyst and one from sculkfish. Lush Bait has a moss carpet recipe that makes 2 and a mossy boot recipe that makes 8. Dripstone Bait has a pointed dripstone recipe that makes 4, and Murkwater Bait has lilypad and mangrove roots recipes that make 4 each.[13]

        Decoration and extras

For decorating there are fish plaques, tackle box boats, the Aquarium, the Starcatcher's Display and Fisherman's Hats in 16 colours. There are also cooked fish recipes: Cooked Starcaught Fish can be made by smelting, smoking or a campfire.[13]

The Acacia, Bamboo, Birch, Cherry and Dark Oak fish plaques, the aquarium and the display each drop themselves when broken.[14][15][16][17][18][19][20]

The black, blue, brown, cyan, gray, green and light blue Fisherman's Hats drop themselves when broken as well.[21][22][23][24][25][26][27]

The clam and conch blocks also drop themselves when broken.[28][29]

What changed in Starcatcher between versions?

        1 part

All the Mods 11 0.12.0-beta ships Starcatcher version 3.3.8.1-NEOFORGE-26.1.2. The pack's mod list shows it was first included in this release or an earlier one, so the sources here can't tell you exactly when it joined the pack.[30]

3.3.8.1 (the version in this pack)

This is the mod's own changelog for the version you are playing with. It lists these changes:[30][31]

        • Added a recipe for the pale tackle box.[31]
        • Fixed the tackle box tooltip offset.[31]
        • Fixed the daytime restriction.[31]
        • Removed leftover todo comments, which is internal cleanup.[31]

Unverified The pack changelogs have no entries for Starcatcher, so the sources here do not show whether the pack changed any of its values or recipes between releases.
