What is No Chat Reports?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

No Chat Reports strips the cryptographic signatures that Minecraft attaches to every chat message from 1.19 onwards. Without them, your messages can't be tracked and tied back to your Minecraft client, and by extension your Microsoft account. Since 1.19.1 the mod also disables Player Chat Reporting.[1]

The pack ships version 1.21.1-v2.9.1, the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.1. It's a quality-of-life and privacy mod, not a gameplay one, so it adds no items, machines or progression steps.[2]

Who it's for

It's for you if you don't want your chat history linked to your account, whether you play singleplayer, join servers, or run your own. The mod works on the client, the server, or both, and what it does depends on where it's installed.[1]

  • Client only: your client refuses to send your account's public key and strips signatures from your messages, so there's no proof they came from your account. The server relays them unless enforce-secure-profile is true in server.properties, which is the default since 1.19.1.[1]
  • Server only: clients still attach signatures, but the server strips them before relaying messages, so chat reporting doesn't work for anyone who joins. The config can also convert player messages to system messages, so players without the mod don't see them flagged as "Not Secure".[1]
  • Both sides: signatures are stripped on the client and the server doesn't try to verify them. Chat reporting and "Only Show Secure Chat" stop working, and players are told the mod disabled them.[1]
Watch out: The mod only stays effective on the client if the server allows it. The author deliberately doesn't integrate exploits to get around servers that enforce chat signing. On 1.19.3 or higher, you can still join such a server, but you can't use chat-related commands (other commands still work).[1]

Other things to know

When installed on the client, the mod also disables Telemetry. Its settings live in a NoChatReports subfolder of the config folder, split across NCR-Client.json (client-side), NCR-Common.json (server-side), NCR-Encryption.json (chat encryption, client only) and NCR-ServerPreferences.json (per-server signing modes).[1]

Unverified The sources I have don't show any quests, an ATM Star path role, or any pack-specific config changes for this mod, so I can't say whether the pack changes the mod's defaults.

How do you get started with No Chat Reports?

3 parts

Good news: there's nothing to craft here. This mod adds no items or blocks that you build in the pack, so there are no recipes to follow and no quests to complete for it. It works in the background, and your first steps are about understanding what it does and where to adjust it.[1][3]

What it does for you

The mod strips the cryptographic signatures from your chat messages. That makes it impossible to track and associate your messages with your Microsoft account, and it also disables the Player Chat Reporting feature.[1][3]

Your first steps, in order

  1. Just play. If you only have the mod on your side, it refuses to send your account's public key to the server and strips signatures from the messages you send.[1]
  2. Look at the multiplayer menu. The mod can add a button there that toggles most of its client-side features, plus a button for reloading its config. Both are controlled by config options, so if you don't see them, they may be turned off.[3]
  3. If a server won't let you in, try switching the mod off with that toggle. The mod's own tooltip says you may have to do this to join some Paper/Velocity servers, which are known to cause issues with it.[3]
  4. Check the signing mode if a server demands signed chat. In prompt mode, messages are not signed by default, but you get a pop-up asking whether to enable signing for one session. Never mode ignores every signing request, and always mode signs as soon as you join, like a vanilla client.[3]
  5. Look for the Safe Server icon. The mod can show a special icon in the multiplayer menu for servers that have it or similar anti-reporting measures, and a server safety status in the bottom-right corner of the chat screen.[3]
Watch out: The mod can only protect you as far as the server allows. If a server enforces chat signing, a client-only install can't get around it. Depending on the Minecraft version, you may be unable to join, or unable to use chat-related commands.[1]

If you run a server

With the mod only on the server, players' clients still attach signatures, but the server strips them before relaying messages, so chat reporting won't work for anyone who joins. You can also turn on converting player messages into system messages, which stops players without the mod from seeing them flagged as not secure. You can even make the server require every joining client to have the mod.[1][3]

Tip: Telemetry is also disabled when the mod is on the client, similar to what the No Telemetry mod does. Chat trust tweaks and the removal of the vanilla "Chat messages can't be verified" toast keep working even when you toggle the networking features off, and you can disable them individually in the config.[1][3]

Unverified This pack's exact config values, such as whether the multiplayer menu buttons are on by default, are not confirmed in the sources, so check the in-game config before relying on them.

How does No Chat Reports work?

6 parts

No Chat Reports is a chat and networking mod, so this section covers how chat signing, reporting and the client-side toggles behave, as far as the sources explain them.[1][3]

Since 1.19, every chat message carries a cryptographic signature. The mod strips those signatures, so your messages can't be tracked back to your Microsoft account. As of 1.19.1 it also disables Player Chat Reporting.[1][3]

What happens depending on where it is installed

The mod can run on the client, the server, or both, and it behaves differently in each case.[1]

  • Only on the client: your client refuses to send your account's public key and strips signatures from your messages. The server relays them unless enforce-secure-profile is set to true in server.properties, which has been the default since 1.19.1.[1]
  • Only on the client, on a server that requires signing: on 1.19.1 or 1.19.2 you can't join unless you agree to send signed messages, and the mod shows a warning screen. On 1.19.3 or higher you can still join, but you can't use chat-related commands. Other commands still work.[1]
  • Only on the server: clients still sign their messages, but the server strips the signatures before relaying them, so chat reporting doesn't work for anyone who joins. The server config can also convert player messages into system messages. System messages carry no signature and can't be reported, and players without the mod won't see them as "Not Secure".[1][3]
  • Only on the server, as of 1.20.2: the server can't disable the unsigned messages warning on the client. That only works if the client has NoChatReports or a similar mod.[1]
  • On both sides: signatures are stripped on the client before sending, and the server doesn't try to verify them. Chat reporting and "Only Show Secure Chat" don't work, and players are told those features are disabled by the mod when they try to use them.[1]

The mod can also be configured to demand itself on the other side. A server can require every joining client to have it installed, and a client can refuse to join servers that don't have it. In this pack the client-side option demandOnServer is set to false, so you can still join servers without the mod.[1][3][4]

Signing modes

If a server forces or allows chat signing, your signing mode decides what your client does. This pack sets defaultSigningMode to PROMPT.[3][4]

  • Prompt: messages aren't signed by default. If the server demands signing, a pop-up lets you enable it for one session.[3]
  • On demand: works like prompt, but without the pop-up. Signing is enabled automatically as soon as the server demands it.[3]
  • Always: signing is enabled as soon as you enter the server, exactly like a vanilla client.[3]
  • Never: messages are never signed, and every server request to sign them is ignored.[3]
  • Never (forced): your messages can't be signed at all. Either you're on an offline account, or the client failed to fetch your signing keys from Mojang's service.[3]

Client options as this pack sets them

enableMod is true. It turns on most of the mod's client-side functionality, and if you toggle it mid-session you need to rejoin the server for it to take effect.[3][4]

showNCRButton and showReloadButton are both true. They add a toggle button and a config reload button to the multiplayer menu. The reload button's tooltip says to use it carefully.[3][4]

Tip: If a Paper or Velocity server won't let you in, try switching the mod off with the multiplayer menu button. Those servers are known to cause issues with the mod. Chat trust status tweaks and the removal of vanilla's "Chat messages can't be verified" toast still work, and you can disable them individually in the config.[3]

disableTelemetry is true, so the mod disables built-in telemetry in the same way No Telemetry does.[1][3][4]

Chat indicators and warnings

Safe Server icons

verifiedIconEnabled is true, so the multiplayer menu shows a special icon for servers with the mod or other anti-chat-reporting measures. showServerSafety is also true, which shows the server's safety status in the bottom-right corner of the chat screen. You can hover the icon for more information. This pack offsets the icon with verifiedIconOffsetX set to -20 and verifiedIconOffsetY set to 0.[3][4]

Config files

  • NCR-Client.json stores client-side settings.[1]
  • NCR-Common.json stores server-side settings.[1]
  • NCR-Encryption.json stores chat encryption settings, which are only effective on the client.[1]
  • NCR-ServerPreferences.json stores per-server signing modes.[1]

Which No Chat Reports config options matter?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

No Chat Reports runs on the client side in this pack, and its settings live in config/NoChatReports/NCR-Client.json. Here is exactly how the pack sets the options you are most likely to care about.[1][5]

Core behavior

Telemetry

Chat indicators and warnings

The pack sets the hide options for insecure, modified and system message indicators, and for the warning toast, to true.[5]

Buttons and server safety

Verified icon

Watch out: The mod only works as far as the server allows. With the mod only on your client, the server relays your messages unless enforce-secure-profile is set to true in server.properties, and that has been the default since 1.19.1. If a server enforces it, no client setting here will get around that.[1]

What changed in No Chat Reports between versions?

1 part

All the Mods 11 0.8.0-beta ships No Chat Reports 26.1-v2.19.0, the NeoForge build. The mod has been in the pack since All the Mods 11 0.0.19 or earlier, so you've had it for a long time.[6]

Here are the notable changes from the mod's own changelog, newest first. The changelog I have is cut off after build 1.21.4-v2.11.0, so older builds aren't covered.[7]

Mod changelog highlights

  • 26.1-v2.19.0 (the version in this pack): initial port to 26.1.[6][7]
  • 1.21.11-v2.18.0: added Cloth Config compatibility for Forge and NeoForge.[7]
  • 1.21.11-v2.17.0: initial 1.21.11 port.[7]
  • 1.21.10-v2.16.0: initial 1.21.10 (and 1.21.9) port, and a placeholder for a removed label was taken out of the Cloth Config GUI.[7]
  • 1.21.8-v2.15.0: fixed a crash with the message "broken implementation of ModMenuApi".[7]
  • 1.21.7-v2.14.0: initial 1.21.7 port, plus a fix for an unlocalized "Learn more" button in the Realms warning screen.[7]
  • 1.21.6-v2.13.0: initial 1.21.6 port. Encryption-related assets were removed from the mod jar, and encryption-related strings were removed from most translations. Fabric versions no longer specify explicit Quilt compatibility. Several translations were added or updated, including Argentine Spanish, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, and French.[7]
  • 1.21.5-v2.12.0: initial 1.21.5 port. Chat encryption support was dropped, because better dedicated solutions are available.[7]
  • 1.21.4-v2.11.0: initial 1.21.4 port, and Malay and Malay (Jawi) translations were added.[7]
Tip: If you remember chat encryption from older versions of the mod, it's gone. The mod dropped that feature in build 1.21.5-v2.12.0, so it isn't part of the version in this pack.[6][7]

Unverified No pack changelog entries for this mod were available, so I can't say whether any All the Mods 11 release changed how it is set up.
