What is No Chat Reports?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

No Chat Reports strips the cryptographic signatures that Minecraft attaches to every chat message from 1.19 onwards. Without them, your messages can't be tracked and tied back to your Minecraft client, and by extension your Microsoft account. Since 1.19.1 the mod also disables Player Chat Reporting.[1]

The pack ships version 1.21.1-v2.9.1, the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.1. It's a quality-of-life and privacy mod, not a gameplay one, so it adds no items, machines or progression steps.[2]

Who it's for

It's for you if you don't want your chat history linked to your account, whether you play singleplayer, join servers, or run your own. The mod works on the client, the server, or both, and what it does depends on where it's installed.[1]

  • Client only: your client refuses to send your account's public key and strips signatures from your messages, so there's no proof they came from your account. The server relays them unless enforce-secure-profile is true in server.properties, which is the default since 1.19.1.[1]
  • Server only: clients still attach signatures, but the server strips them before relaying messages, so chat reporting doesn't work for anyone who joins. The config can also convert player messages to system messages, so players without the mod don't see them flagged as "Not Secure".[1]
  • Both sides: signatures are stripped on the client and the server doesn't try to verify them. Chat reporting and "Only Show Secure Chat" stop working, and players are told the mod disabled them.[1]
Watch out: The mod only stays effective on the client if the server allows it. The author deliberately doesn't integrate exploits to get around servers that enforce chat signing. On 1.19.3 or higher, you can still join such a server, but you can't use chat-related commands (other commands still work).[1]

Other things to know

When installed on the client, the mod also disables Telemetry. Its settings live in a NoChatReports subfolder of the config folder, split across NCR-Client.json (client-side), NCR-Common.json (server-side), NCR-Encryption.json (chat encryption, client only) and NCR-ServerPreferences.json (per-server signing modes).[1]

Unverified The sources I have don't show any quests, an ATM Star path role, or any pack-specific config changes for this mod, so I can't say whether the pack changes the mod's defaults.

How do you get started with No Chat Reports?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

No Chat Reports is a different kind of mod from the ones you'll be crafting with. There's nothing to build first. It strips the cryptographic signatures from the chat messages you send, so they can't be tied to your Microsoft account, and it also disables Player Chat Reporting.[1][3]

Unverified No recipes or quests for this mod were found in the pack's data, so there are no crafting steps or quest milestones to follow here.

What to do first

  1. Check which side you're on. With the mod on the client only, it refuses to send your account's public key and strips signatures from your messages. On a server only, it strips signatures before relaying messages to other players. With both, the server won't try to verify signatures at all.[1]
  2. Know what happens on servers that enforce signing. The server's enforce-secure-profile option defaults to true. On 1.19.3 or higher you can still join such a server, but you can't use chat-related commands. Other commands still work.[1]
  3. If you can't join a Paper or Velocity server, look for the No Chat Reports toggle in the multiplayer menu. It disables most of the mod's client-side functionality, and the mod's own tooltip says you may need to do this on those servers because they are known to cause issues.[3]
  4. Pick a signing mode if a server asks for signatures. In prompt mode your messages aren't signed by default, but if the server demands signing you get a pop-up where you can enable it for one session. Always mode signs as soon as you join, like a vanilla client. Never mode ignores every signing request.[3]

Optional: chat encryption

The mod also has an encryption feature for your messages. Right-click the encryption button to configure it. While encryption is on, you can hold a key when sending a message to skip encryption for that one message.[3]

You can generate a random key with the dice button. For AES, the key is 128 bits of Base64-encoded binary data. If you'd rather use a passphrase, pick a strong one, because not every algorithm supports passphrases.[3]

Tip: Turning off the encryption button doesn't turn off encryption itself. Switch encryption off in its own settings if you want it gone.[3]
Watch out: The mod only stays effective on the client if the server allows it. Servers that enforce chat signing and fully support reporting will still get their way.[1]

How does No Chat Reports work?

4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

This one isn't a machine mod, so there's no power, fluid or item automation to learn. It's a chat and networking mod. It strips the cryptographic signatures from your chat messages, so they can't be tied to your Microsoft account, and it also disables Player Chat Reporting. Once you know where it's installed and how the signing modes work, you know the whole mod.[1][3]

What changes depending on where it's installed

The mod can run on the client, the server, or both, and it behaves differently in each case.[1]

  • Only on the client: your client refuses to send your account's public key and strips signatures from your messages, so there's no proof a reported message came from your account. The server relays them unless enforce-secure-profile is true in server.properties, which has been the default since 1.19.1.[1]
  • Only on the server: clients still attach signatures, but the server strips them before relaying messages, so chat reporting doesn't work for anyone who joins. The server can also convert player messages into system messages. System messages have no signatures and can't be reported.[1][3]
  • On both: signatures are stripped on the client before sending, and the server doesn't try to verify them. Chat reporting and "Only Show Secure Chat" stop working, and players are told those features are disabled by the mod.[1]
Watch out: If a server enforces signing and you only have the mod on the client, it depends on the version. On 1.19.1 or 1.19.2 you can't join unless you agree to send signed messages, and the mod shows a warning screen. On 1.19.3 or higher you can still join, but you can't use chat-related commands. Other commands still work.[1]

The mod can also be set to demand itself on the other side. A server can require every joining client to have it, and a client can refuse to join servers that don't have it. In this pack the client option demandOnServer is false, so you can still join servers without the mod.[1][3][4]

Signing modes

The signing mode decides what your client does when a server forces or allows chat signing. The pack sets defaultSigningMode to PROMPT. Per-server choices are stored in NCR-ServerPreferences.json.[1][3][4]

  • Always: signing turns on as soon as you enter the server, the same as a vanilla client.[3]
  • Never: your messages are never signed and every server request to sign them is ignored.[3]
  • Prompt: messages aren't signed by default. If the server demands signing, a pop-up lets you enable it for one session. This is the pack's default.[3][4]
  • On demand: works like prompt mode, but signing turns on automatically when the server demands it, with no pop-up.[3]
  • Never (forced): shown when your messages can't be signed at all, either because you're on an offline account or because the client couldn't fetch your signing keys from Mojang's service.[3]

Chat encryption

The client can encrypt and decrypt your chat messages with a key. The key format depends on the algorithm. For AES it's 128 bits of Base64-encoded binary data. You can generate a random key with the dice button, or derive one from a passphrase, though not every algorithm supports passphrases. If you use a passphrase, pick a strong one.[3]

While encryption is on, right-click the encryption button to configure it. You can also hold a key when sending a message to skip encryption for that message. Encrypted messages can be shown with a purple bar next to them. Encryption settings live in NCR-Encryption.json and are only effective on the client.[1][3]

Tip: Hiding the encryption button doesn't turn encryption off. If you want it off, disable it itself rather than just hiding the button.[3]

What this pack sets on the client

Client settings live in NCR-Client.json. Here's how the pack sets the main ones.[1][4]

Tip: If you can't join a Paper or Velocity server, try turning the mod off with the multiplayer menu button. Those servers are known to cause issues with it. Encryption, chat trust tweaks and the removal of vanilla's "Chat messages can't be verified" toast still work with the mod toggled off, and each can be disabled in config individually.[3]

Which No Chat Reports config options matter?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

No Chat Reports runs on the client side in this pack, and its settings live in config/NoChatReports/NCR-Client.json. Here is exactly how the pack sets the options you are most likely to care about.[1][4]

Core behavior

Telemetry

Chat indicators and warnings

The pack sets the hide options for insecure, modified and system message indicators, and for the warning toast, to true.[4]

Buttons and server safety

Verified icon

Watch out: The mod only works as far as the server allows. With the mod only on your client, the server relays your messages unless enforce-secure-profile is set to true in server.properties, and that has been the default since 1.19.1. If a server enforces it, no client setting here will get around that.[1]

What changed in No Chat Reports between versions?

1 part

All the Mons 1.3.0 ships No Chat Reports 1.21.1-v2.9.1, using the NeoForge build of the mod. It was first included in All the Mons 0.3.0-beta or earlier, so it has been part of the pack for a long time.[5]

Mod releases leading up to the pack's version

Here are the notable changes from the mod's own changelog, newest first.[6]

  • 1.21.1-v2.9.1 (the version in this pack): fixed a network protocol error that happened when joining some servers.[5][6]
  • 1.21.1-v2.9.0: the initial 1.21.1 port. It also fixed the client disconnecting from Realms when encryption is enabled and a player's death from a named item is announced in chat, and fixed the server ping hanging in the multiplayer menu in some cases.[6]
  • 1.21-v2.8.0: the initial 1.21 port.[6]
  • 1.20.6-v2.7.1: added a Mexican Spanish translation.[6]
  • 1.20.6-v2.7.0: the initial port to 1.20.6, which should work for 1.20.5 too.[6]
  • 1.20.4-v2.6.1: fixed a startup crash on dedicated servers with NeoForge.[6]
  • 1.20.4-v2.6.0: added support for NeoForge, which is the loader build this pack uses. The Fabric version also stopped bundling the required Fabric API modules and now needs the full Fabric API installed separately.[5][6]
  • 1.20.2-v2.3.1: fixed the verified server icon not rendering correctly, and fixed incorrect handling of chat messages that exceed vanilla's limit of 256 characters upon encryption.[6]
  • 1.20.2-v2.3.0: removed a server-side mechanism that stopped the "messages cannot be verified" toast from showing on clients when the mod was set to convert player messages to system messages.[6]

Unverified The mod changelog available here is cut off after the 1.20.1 releases, so changes in older versions are unverified. No pack changelog entries for this mod were available either, so what changed for it between pack releases is also unverified.
