What is YUNG's Better Nether Fortresses?

2 parts

YUNG's Better Nether Fortresses completely redesigns Minecraft's Nether fortresses from the ground up. Compared to vanilla, these fortresses are much larger, more complex and more rewarding, so a trip into the Nether turns into a proper exploration run.[1]

What a fortress looks like

Every Better Fortress is built from three parts. Keep an eye out for each one when you're exploring:[1]

  • The bridge networks.[1]
  • The Keep.[1]
  • The Lava Halls, which extend deep underground.[1]

The mod has built-in compatibility with Create. When Create is installed, some parts of the fortress have a chance of spawning with Create pieces. This is optional, and Create isn't required to run the mod.[1]

The mod is designed to be fully compatible with other worldgen mods, including Nether biome mods such as Infernal Expansion and Better Nether. With Apocalyptic Fortress, its fortress spawns alongside the Better Fortress. With Bygone Nether, Better Fortresses spawn instead of Bygone Nether's enhanced vanilla fortress.[1]

In this pack

This pack runs version 1.21.1-NeoForge-3.1.3 of the mod. It changes world generation, so you'll find it by exploring the Nether rather than by crafting anything. If you're the kind of player who likes exploring big structures and looting them, this one is for you.[1][2]

Unverified This mod isn't part of the ATM Star quest path, and no quests in this pack involve it.

How do you get started with YUNG's Better Nether Fortresses?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Good news: there's nothing to craft before you start with this mod. YUNG's Better Nether Fortresses is a worldgen mod that redesigns Nether fortresses from the ground up, so your first step is simply finding one in the Nether.[1]

Compared to vanilla, these fortresses are much larger, more complex and more rewarding. Each one has three parts: the bridge networks, the Keep, and the Lava Halls that extend deep underground.[1]

What to expect when you go exploring

  • Expect a much bigger structure than a vanilla fortress. Look for the bridge networks first, then the Keep, and remember the Lava Halls go deep underground.[1]
  • If Create is installed, certain parts of the fortress have a chance of spawning with Create pieces. This is an optional feature, so you may or may not see it.[1]
  • The mod is intended to work with other worldgen mods. With Apocalyptic Fortress, that mod's fortress spawns alongside the Better Fortress. With Bygone Nether, Better Fortresses spawn instead of its enhanced vanilla fortress.[1]

Vanilla fortresses

The mod has a config option called disableVanillaFortresses, which controls whether vanilla Nether Fortresses are disabled. I can't confirm its value in this pack, so check your config before you assume which fortress types you'll run into.[3]

Unverified The sources I have don't show any in-pack recipes, quests or items for this mod, so there is no crafting order to follow here. If you find a recipe or quest tied to it, treat it as unconfirmed until it's verified.

How does YUNG's Better Nether Fortresses work?

4 parts

This isn't a tech mod, so there are no machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item automation to learn here. It's a world generation mod: its whole job is to replace the Nether fortresses you find while exploring with a completely redesigned version. Everything below is about how those new fortresses are put together.[1]

How a fortress is built

Compared to vanilla, these fortresses are much larger, more complex and more rewarding to explore. Each one is made of three parts that connect together.[1]

  • The bridge networks, which link the different areas of the fortress.[1]
  • The Keep, which is one of the three main parts of every fortress.[1]
  • The Lava Halls, which extend deep underground below the rest of the structure.[1]
Tip: Because the Lava Halls extend deep underground, don't stop exploring once you've cleared the bridges and the Keep. A good part of the fortress sits below the surface structures.[1]

Vanilla fortresses

The mod has a general option that controls whether vanilla Nether Fortresses should be disabled.[3]

Unverified The setting this pack uses for the option that disables vanilla fortresses could not be confirmed, because the pack's config files for this mod were not available. It's unconfirmed whether you can still find vanilla fortresses alongside the redesigned ones.

Create pieces

The mod has built-in compatibility with Create. When Create is installed, certain parts of a fortress have a chance to generate using Create pieces. This is an optional feature, and the mod doesn't need Create to run. It applies to Minecraft 1.19.2 and newer.[1]

Unverified The available sources don't confirm whether Create is installed in this pack. They also don't say which fortress parts can use Create pieces, or how likely that is.

Working alongside other worldgen mods

The mod is intended to be fully compatible with every worldgen mod, including Nether biome mods like Infernal Expansion and Better Nether, so these fortresses should generate in whatever Nether biomes you run into.[1]

  • With Apocalyptic Fortress, that mod's fortress spawns alongside the Better Fortress, so you can find both.[1]
  • With Bygone Nether, Better Fortresses spawn instead of Bygone Nether's enhanced vanilla fortress.[1]

Unverified It's unconfirmed which of these other worldgen mods are part of this pack.

Which YUNG's Better Nether Fortresses config options matter?

1 part

Unverified This pack doesn't ship a config file for this mod, so there's nothing here that has been tuned away from the mod's own behaviour. The mod does generate its own config in a normal instance, but the exact option names and defaults can't be confirmed from the sources used for this guide.

What decides how fortresses look anyway

Even without config files, a couple of the mod's behaviours change depending on what else is installed, so it's worth knowing what's driving what you see underground. The mod is a complete redesign of Nether fortresses, with each one made up of bridge networks, the Keep, and the Lava Halls that extend deep below.[1]

The big one is the built-in Create compatibility. With Create present, certain parts of the fortress have a chance of spawning using Create pieces. That's an optional feature of the mod rather than a switch you have to flip, and Create isn't required for the mod to run at all.[1]

The mod is also intended to be fully compatible with every worldgen mod, so you shouldn't need to disable anything to keep other structure mods happy. Two interactions are spelled out by the mod itself: Apocalyptic Fortress's fortress will spawn alongside the Better Fortress, and with Bygone Nether installed you'll get Better Fortresses instead of Bygone Nether's enhanced vanilla fortress.[1]

The same goes for other YUNG structure mods and Nether biome mods such as Infernal Expansion and Better Nether: they're listed as compatible, so fortresses should still generate normally alongside them.[1]

Unverified If you want to change how fortresses generate, you'd be adding the mod's config yourself rather than editing something the pack already provides. Nothing shipped with the pack overrides it for you.

What changed in YUNG's Better Nether Fortresses between versions?

1 part

All the Mods 10 2.11 ships YUNG's Better Nether Fortresses 1.21.1-NeoForge-3.1.3. The mod has been in the pack since All the Mods 10 1.0 or earlier, so you've likely been exploring these fortresses for a while.[2]

Mod changelog highlights

  • 3.1.0: The port to 1.21.1. All structure NBT files were updated for it.[4]
  • 3.1.2: The minimum version requirements were lowered, so the mod works on both 1.21 and 1.21.1.[5]
  • 3.1.3: Fixed an issue where feature mixins could cause worldgen deadlocks. The changelog credits TelepathicGrunt for the fix.[6]

3.1.3 is the version you're running in 2.11. If you've ever had world generation hang while exploring, this is the fix aimed at that kind of problem.[2][6]

Unverified No pack changelog entries for this mod were available, so any pack-specific changes to it across releases are unconfirmed.
