What is Construction Sticks?

1 part

Construction Sticks is in this pack at version 1.2.1, and it has been included since All the Mods 10 2.2 or earlier, so it is a long-standing part of the pack.[1]

The mod adds a line of sticks, starting with the Stickiest Stick (shown in game as the Stickiest Stick) and moving up through these tiers:[2]

Where it sits in the quest book

The pack's quest book places the sticks in the "building_tips" chapter. The quest a quest in "?" is an item task, and any one of the sticks listed above completes it.[2]

That quest comes after a quest in "?", so you reach it by working through the chapter in that order.[2]

Unverified The sources here do not show whether the ATM Star path uses Construction Sticks, so check the quest book in game if you are following that path.

How do you get started with Construction Sticks?

4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Construction Sticks are building wands for this pack. The quest a quest in "?" sits in the Building Tips chapter, right after the Paxel quest. It explains that the more expensive a stick is, the more durability it has and the more blocks it can place.[3]

Craft the Stickiest Stick

Start with the Stickiest Stick, the entry-level stick. It is the base that the other tiers are named after, and it is a good way to learn the controls first. Here is the exact in-pack recipe:[4]

The Construction Sticks quest asks for any one of the Stickiest, Copper, Iron, Diamond or Netherite sticks, so the Stickiest Stick is enough to complete it.[3]

Set your keybind

This is the step people miss. Sticks start out just placing blocks to fill a space, and their options live in a GUI that you open with a keybind you have to set yourself. In that screen you can change where blocks are placed, in what pattern, and even which blocks get placed.[3]

A stick places blocks at the side of a building that faces you. A separate key changes the placement restriction between Horizontal, Vertical, North/South, East/West and No lock. Blocks in your offhand are placed instead of the block you are looking at, and shulker boxes, bundles and many containers from other mods can supply blocks for the stick.[5]

Tip: Made a mistake? Hold the undo key while looking at a block to see your last placed blocks outlined in green. Press the undo key while looking at one of them to undo the operation and get your items back.[5]

Move up a tier

Once you are comfortable, craft a better stick for more durability and more blocks per use. The higher tiers are the Copper Stick, Iron Stick, Diamond Stick and Netherite Stick. Their exact in-pack recipes are shown below.[3][4]

Add upgrades

Each stick can take upgrades. You craft an upgrade template, then put it together with your stick and the required extra item in a Smithing Table. The Smithing Table recipes show which item each upgrade needs. The templates are:[3][5]

  • Angel Stick Template: places a block on the opposite side of the block you are facing, and lets you place in mid-air with a right click on empty space. The block you want to place must be in your offhand.[4][5]
  • Replacement Stick Template: swaps blocks for the type you hold in your offhand, which is handy for replacing walls after placement.[4][5]
  • Battery Template: uses stored energy instead of durability, but you can only charge the stick if you have a mod that provides a way to do so.[4][5]
  • Destruction Stick Template: destroys blocks (not block entities) on the side facing you. Destroyed blocks disappear, but the undo feature can restore them.[4][5]
  • Unbreakable Template: places blocks without using durability, so the stick never breaks.[4][5]

As an example, here are the recipe for the Angel template and the Smithing Table recipe that applies it to an Iron Stick:[4]

How does Construction Sticks work?

7 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Construction Sticks are building tools, not machines. There is no multiblock, no fluid handling and no automation here. Everything is about how a stick places blocks, what it pulls from your inventory, and how upgrades change its behavior. The sources don't describe any power network, so the only energy mechanic is the battery upgrade, covered below.[5]

How a stick places blocks

A stick extends a building on the side facing you. Each tier has its own block count and durability, so a stick places up to a set number of blocks per use and lasts a set amount of time. The exact per-tier numbers aren't in the sources I have, so check them in-game on the stick's tooltip.[5]

The tiers are the Stickiest Stick, Copper Stick, Iron Stick, Diamond Stick and Netherite Stick. Each has its own settings group in the mod's configuration.[4][5]

Placement restrictions

Press the bound key to cycle the placement restriction. The options are Horizontal, Vertical, North/South, East/West and No lock. This is what each one does:[5]

  • Horizontal builds a horizontal column in front of the original block.[5]
  • Vertical builds a vertical column in front of the original block.[5]
  • North/South builds a row in the N/S direction on top of the original block.[5]
  • East/West builds a row in the E/W direction on top of the original block.[5]
  • No lock extends from any side of the original block.[5]

Option screen toggles

A second bound key opens the option screen. These are the toggles it offers:[5]

  • Direction: place blocks facing the player, or with the same direction as the target block.[5]
  • Match: Exact only extends blocks that are exactly the same. Similar treats related blocks, such as dirt and grass types, as equal. The mod has a setting to define which blocks count as similar.[5]
  • Random: when on, the stick places random blocks present in your hotbar.[5]
  • Replace: when on, the stick replaces certain blocks like fluids, snow and tall grass.[5]

Where the blocks come from

Shulker boxes, bundles and many containers from other mods can supply building blocks to the stick. Blocks in your offhand take priority: the stick places those instead of the block you're looking at.[5]

The mod can also allow or block placing blocks that have block entities, such as chests. It uses a list that works as either a whitelist or a blacklist, and entries can be block ids or whole mod ids. Whether the pack changed that list isn't confirmed in my sources.[5]

Undo

Hold the bound undo key while looking at blocks to see your last placed blocks outlined in green. Press the key while looking at any of them to undo the operation, and you get the items back. If you used the destruction upgrade, undo restores the blocks.[5]

The mod has a setting for how many operations can be undone. There's also a maximum placement range setting meant for lag prevention rather than balance. It affects all sticks, and 0 means unlimited. The pack's values for these aren't available, so treat them as unverified.[5]

Upgrades

Upgrades are templates that you apply in a smithing table. Put the template, your stick and the required extra item together. The smithing recipes show which item each upgrade needs. The mod can also disable stick upgrading entirely, though I can't confirm that the pack has done so.[4][5]

You can switch between installed upgrades with the bound key while holding the stick, or through the option screen.[5]

  • Angel Stick Template: places a block on the opposite side of the block, or row of blocks, you are facing. Right-click empty space to place in mid-air, with the block in your offhand. The maximum distance depends on the stick tier.[4][5]
  • Destruction Stick Template: destroys blocks on the side facing you, but not block entities. The maximum number of blocks depends on the tier. Destroyed blocks disappear into the void, so use undo if you make a mistake.[4][5]
  • Replacement Stick Template: swaps blocks for the type you hold in your offhand. It's handy for replacing walls after placement.[4][5]
  • Unbreakable Template: lets you place blocks without using durability, so the stick never breaks.[4][5]
  • Battery Template: lets the stick store energy and use that instead of durability.[4][5]

Here is an example upgrade, the Angel upgrade on an Iron Stick:[4]

Iron StickMod recipe

The templates themselves are crafted. Here is the Angel one:[4]

Crafting Shaped

Crafting Shaped

any gold ingotany glass blocksEmpty slot

Recipe id: constructionstick:template_angel

Watch out: The battery upgrade only helps if another mod can charge the stick. The Construction Sticks mod doesn't provide a way to charge it.[5]

Angel falling

With the angel upgrade, the stick can place blocks below you while you fall more than 10 blocks. This can save you from drops or the void. That figure comes from the setting's description, and I can't check the pack's actual value.[5]

Unverified Per-tier block counts, durability, angel distance limits, destruction block limits, battery storage and battery cost per block are not in the available sources, and the pack has no config files for this mod. Check them in-game.

How do you progress through Construction Sticks?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Construction Sticks bring back the building-wand style of play, and the pack gives them their own quest, a quest in "?", in the Building Tips chapter. It unlocks after the Paxel quest. The quest's task accepts any of the sticks: Stickiest Stick, Copper Stick, Iron Stick, Diamond Stick or Netherite Stick.[3]

The tiers

The quest gives you the rule of thumb: the more expensive the stick, the more durability it has and the more blocks it can place. So you climb from the Stickiest Stick through copper, iron and diamond to netherite, and each step up is more capacity.[3]

Each tier has its own crafting recipe in the pack. Here they are in order, starting with the Stickiest Stick.[4]

Setting it up

A fresh stick just places blocks to fill a space. To change that, open its GUI, but you have to set a keybind for it yourself first. From the GUI you can change where it places blocks, in what pattern, and even which blocks it places.[3]

Upgrades

On top of the tiers, the sticks have their own upgrades. You craft the upgrade, then combine it with your stick in a Smithing Table. The pack has these upgrade templates: Angel Stick Template, Battery Template, Destruction Stick Template, Replacement Stick Template and Unbreakable Template.[3][4]

Every template has its own smithing recipe for every tier, from the Stickiest Stick up to the Netherite Stick. Each of those recipes also asks for an extra material beyond the template and the stick. Here is one example, applying the Angel template to a Diamond Stick.[4]

Diamond StickMod recipe

Smithing Upgrade (constructionstick)

Recipe id: constructionstick:smithing_upgrade/diamond_stick_with_template_angel

The other templates and tiers follow the same pattern.

Tip: Smithing upgrades have recipes for every tier, including the Stickiest Stick. That means you can craft upgrade templates early and apply them to whichever stick you have.[4]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Construction Sticks?

1 part

Construction Sticks shows up in just one place in the quest book: the "building_tips" chapter. Only one quest there involves the mod, so this section is short.[2]

The quest is a quest in "?", and it has no title in the quest book. Its task is an item task that accepts any one of the mod's sticks: Stickiest Stick, Copper Stick, Iron Stick, Diamond Stick or Netherite Stick.[2]

Because any of those items counts, you don't need to go for the Netherite Stick to finish it.[2]

Order

In the "building_tips" chapter, this quest comes after the quest with the id 22D2CFDDB06C720C, so that one is the step before it.[2]

What changed in Construction Sticks between versions?

Here's how Construction Sticks has moved along through the pack's releases. The sources only cover version bumps, so this is a short list of which jar shipped when, not a breakdown of what changed inside each one.[1][6][7][8]

  • All the Mods 10 2.2 or earlier: Construction Sticks was already in the pack by this point.[1]
  • All the Mods 10 2.36: updated from 1.1.4 to 1.1.5.[8]
  • All the Mods 10 3.0: updated from 1.1.5 to 1.1.7.[7]
  • All the Mods 10 4.0: updated from 1.1.7 to 1.2.1.[6]

All the Mods 10 4.5 ships version 1.2.1, the same one that arrived in 4.0, so there has been no change to this mod since then.[1][6]

Unverified The sources don't include the mod's own changelogs for these versions, so what actually changed in 1.1.5, 1.1.7 and 1.2.1 (new features, fixes or balance changes) is unverified.
