What is Soul Shards?

This pack includes Soul Shards at version 1.3.15, using the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21 (soulshards-1.21-1.3.15-neoforge.jar). It has been part of the pack since version 1.0 or earlier, so it's a long-standing member of the mod list.[1]

Unverified The sources here include no in-jar guidebook or description for Soul Shards, so what the mod does, along with its recipes and config options in this pack, is not shown here. Check the mod's own item tooltips in game for details.

How do you get started with Soul Shards?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide

Soul Shards is about capturing the souls of the mobs you kill. In this pack, the early game comes down to one material, the Corrupted Ingot, which you need for both the Soul Cage and the Vile Sword. Here's the order I'd go in.[2]

First: Vile Dust

Start with Vile Dust. You get it by smelting soul soil, so grab some and cook it. You'll need the dust for the Corrupted Ingot later on.[2]

Next: Corrupted Essence

Then comes Corrupted Essence. The pack changed this recipe, so don't rely on what you remember from other modpacks. The recipe below is the one that counts here.[2]

Then: Corrupted Ingot

Combine the essence and the dust to make a Corrupted Ingot. The pack changed this recipe too. The ingot is the key material for the rest of this guide.[2]

Soul Cage and Vile Sword

With a Corrupted Ingot in hand, you can make the Soul Cage and the Vile Sword. Both use the ingot as a main ingredient, and both are the mod's own recipes, not changed by the pack.[2]

Getting your first Soul Shard

The Soul Shard is a vessel for the souls of the slain. You get it by building a structure in the world and using an item on its origin block. The structure is 4 Obsidian, 4 Blocks of Quartz and 1 Glowstone, and you right-click the top of the Glowstone Block.[3]

Tip: The mod also has a Soul Stealer enchantment, which increases the souls collected per kill by one per level. It's worth knowing about once you start collecting souls.[3]

How does Soul Shards work?

4 parts

The sources for Soul Shards cover a small set of mechanics: building a structure to get your first shard, collecting souls from kills, and crafting the gear that goes with it. Here is what can be confirmed.[3]

Getting a shard: the multiblock

The Soul Shard is described as a vessel for the souls of the slain. You get it by building a structure in the world and using a specific item on the origin block. The structure needs 4x Obsidian, 4x Block of Quartz and 1x Glowstone. To finish it, right-click the top of the Glowstone Block with the required item in hand.[3]

Unverified The exact layout of the obsidian and quartz blocks around the Glowstone, and which item you must hold when you right-click, are not shown in the sources available here.

Collecting souls

The Soul Stealer enchantment increases the souls collected per kill by one per level. The tag that controls what it can go on lists only the Vile Sword.[3][4]

Some entities can't be captured at all. The no-capture list contains the armor stand, the elder guardian, the ender dragon, the wither and the player. The mod also has a chat message, "The shard seems to refuse the trapped soul...", for when a shard won't absorb a soul.[3][5]

The crafting chain

Most of the gear is built from the Corrupted Ingot. It starts with Corrupted Essence, and the pack has changed that recipe from the mod's own version.[6]

The ingot recipe also uses Vile Dust, and it too is changed by the pack.[6]

Gear and the Soul Cage

The Soul Cage has a loot table that gives the block itself, so you can pick it up again after placing it. Its crafting recipe is the mod's own.[6][7]

How do you progress through Soul Shards?

2 parts

In this pack, Soul Shards progression is a short crafting chain. You start with Corrupted Essence, turn it into a Corrupted Ingot, and use that ingot for the Soul Cage and the Vile Sword.[6]

The crafting chain

  1. Craft Corrupted Essence. The pack changed this recipe, so it is not the mod default.[6]
  2. Smelt soul soil to get Vile Dust. This is the mod's own smelting recipe.[6]
  3. Craft Corrupted Ingot from the essence, the dust and an iron ingot. The pack changed this recipe too.[6]
  4. Spend the ingot on a Soul Cage or a Vile Sword. Both are unchanged mod recipes.[6]

Good to know

The Vile Sword is the only item in the mod's soul stealer enchantable tag, so it is the one tool the mod marks for that enchantment.[4]

A Soul Cage drops itself when you break it, so you can pick it up and move it.[7]

Some targets are off limits. The mod's no-capture tag lists the armor stand, elder guardian, ender dragon, wither and player, so you can't capture those.[5]
