What is Forgiving Void?

Forgiving Void is part of the pack's mod list. The pack ships version 21.1.6 of it, built for NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21.1.[1]

It has been in the pack since the 1.0 release or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the setup and not a recent addition.[1]

Unverified I couldn't confirm from the pack's files what Forgiving Void does, how it is configured, or who it is aimed at, so I'm not describing its behavior here. I also found no sign of quests, an ATM Star path step or an in-game guidebook for it, so where it fits in progression is unverified.

How do you get started with Forgiving Void?

2 parts

Forgiving Void is a safety-net mod. Instead of dying when you fall out of the world, you get sent back up towards the sky and land again. The sources I have describe the mod's settings, so this section covers what it does and which options matter early on.[2]

Unverified The sources here show no crafting recipes, items or quests for this mod in the pack, so there is no item to craft first and no quest step to unlock it. I can't confirm any in-pack item to make.

What happens when you fall

When you drop below the world's minimum height by a set distance, the mod forgives you and sends you towards the sky. You then fall from a configurable height. Landing can deal damage, and you can also get status effects for falling through the void.[2]

Settings worth knowing

  • preventDeath: when enabled, the void fall can't kill you. Damage is limited so you keep at least 0.5 hearts.[2]
  • damageOnFall and damageOnFallMode: damageOnFall sets the landing damage. The mode can be ABSOLUTE (half hearts), RELATIVE_CURRENT (a percentage of your current health) or RELATIVE_MAX (a percentage of your max health).[2]
  • returnToLastGrounded: when enabled, you return to the sky above the last place you stood on solid ground instead of where you fell. This stops players using the void to fly across larger distances.[2]
  • fallThroughVoidEffects: effects applied when you fall through the void, written as effect|duration|amplifier.[2]
  • triggerInOverworld, triggerInNether and triggerInEnd: you can turn the mod off separately for the overworld, the nether and the end.[2]
Tip: If you or your server players rubber-band while falling through the void, the disableVanillaAntiCheatWhileFalling option is meant for that. On a public server, only enable it if you have proper anti-cheat installed.[2]

How does Forgiving Void work?

5 parts

Forgiving Void doesn't add machines, multiblocks or anything that needs power, fluids or item automation. The only material available for it describes its settings, and those show how it behaves: when you fall out of the world, it catches you and sends you back toward the sky instead of letting you die in the void.[2]

When and where it triggers

The trigger point is set by the triggerAtDistanceBelow option, which is the distance below the minimum y level at which the mod forgives you and sends you skyward. After that, the fallingHeight option decides how high up you start falling again.[2]

By default you come back at your current position. If returnToLastGrounded is turned on, you are returned to the sky above the last place you stood on solid ground. The tooltip says this stops players from using Forgiving Void to fly across larger distances.[2]

Dimensions

  • triggerInOverworld, triggerInNether and triggerInEnd each switch the effect off for one dimension when set to false. The tooltips label these as dimension 0, -1 and 1.[2]
  • dimensionAllowList is a list of dimension ids where Forgiving Void is allowed. The triggerIn... options take priority over it.[2]
  • dimensionDenyList adds more dimensions to exclude. The triggerIn... options also take priority over it, and it is ignored if dimensionAllowList is set.[2]

Landing damage and effects

The damageOnFall option sets how much damage you take when you land. damageOnFallMode decides how that number is read: ABSOLUTE is fall damage in half hearts, RELATIVE_CURRENT is a percentage of your current health, and RELATIVE_MAX is a percentage of your max health.[2]

With preventDeath enabled, the damage is limited so you are left with at least 0.5 hearts. You can also apply status effects after a void fall through fallThroughVoidEffects, written in the format "effect|duration|amplifier".[2]

Entities and tridents

  • entityAllowList is a list of entity ids that Forgiving Void should also affect. On Forge it only supports living entities.[2]
  • tridentForgiveness lets tridents with loyalty be affected by the mod. The tooltip says it is not supported on Forge.[2]

Multiplayer

Watch out: If players rubber-band while falling through the void, the disableVanillaAntiCheatWhileFalling option can be set to true. On a public server, only do this if you have proper anti-cheat installed.[2]

Unverified The values this pack actually uses for these options (trigger distance, falling height, damage, effects and dimension lists) could not be confirmed, because no config files for the mod are available. Check the in-game config before relying on any default behavior.
