What is Radical Cobblemon Trainers API?

2 parts

Radical Cobblemon Trainers API is a trainer management and battle library for Cobblemon. It's a behind-the-scenes mod, so you won't find new items or blocks from it. It provides the tools other mods use to build trainers and run battles against them.[1]

The API was built as the foundation for the Radical Cobblemon Trainers mod. It also replaces the discontinued CobblemonTrainers dependency for Minecraft 1.21 and newer with Cobblemon 1.6 and newer. It's designed as an independent library, so other mods can use a subset of the same features.[1]

What it offers

  • Trainer management and entity association through a trainer registry.[1]
  • Support for different battle formats, such as 1v1 SINGLE, 1v1 DOUBLE and 2v2 MULTI.[1]
  • Custom battle rules, for example a maximum number of item uses per battle.[1]
  • Extended AI features, currently only supported by RCTBattleAI. These cover the usual battle activities like move selection and switching, plus gimmicks such as Mega Evolution, Dynamax, Z-Moves and Terastallization. Trainers can also carry and use items.[1]
  • Trainer and Pokémon models for easy parsing, with converters to Cobblemon types and model validation that collects all errors before an exception is thrown.[1]
Tip: Most gimmicks that are activated by held items need another mod to provide them. Mega Showdown is the example the project gives, and it's also required for Dynamax and Gigantamax.[1]

In this pack

This pack includes version 0.15.2-beta of the mod, built for NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21.1.[2]

The mod is mainly for mod developers and pack makers, not players. If you're a player, you'll mostly see it indirectly, through other mods that use it to set up trainers and battles.[1]

Unverified The sources don't show any quests in this pack that involve this mod, and they don't place it on the ATM Star path. There's no in-jar guidebook either, so treat it as a background library rather than a progression step.

How do you get started with Radical Cobblemon Trainers API?

2 parts

Good news: there's nothing to craft first with this one. Radical Cobblemon Trainers API is a trainer management and battle API for Cobblemon, which means it's a library that other mods build on, not a mod with its own gear progression.[1]

It was developed as the foundation for the Radical Cobblemon Trainers mod. It also replaces the discontinued CobblemonTrainers dependency for Minecraft 1.21 and newer with Cobblemon 1.6 and newer.[1]

What it does for you

Most of what you'll notice happens in the background, through whichever mod uses the API. Here's what it provides:[1]

  • Trainer management and entity association, through a trainer registry.[1]
  • Different battle formats, such as 1v1 SINGLE, 1v1 DOUBLE and 2v2 MULTI.[1]
  • Custom battle rules, for example a maximum number of item usages per battle.[1]
  • Extended AI through RCTBattleAI, covering the usual battle activities like move selection and switching. Trainers can also carry and use items.[1]
  • Gimmick support such as Mega Evolution, Dynamax, Z-Moves and Terastallization.[1]
Tip: Most gimmicks that are activated by held items need another mod to provide them. Mega Showdown is the example the project page gives, and it's also required for Dynamax and Gigantamax.[1]

Your first steps

Since this is a library, your first step is simply making sure it's installed alongside Cobblemon so the trainer mod that depends on it can load. After that, head to the trainer mod itself for anything you can actually fight or interact with.[1]

Unverified The sources I have don't show any in-pack recipes, quests, configs or item descriptions for this mod, so there are no first items to craft or quests to follow here.

How does Radical Cobblemon Trainers API work?

2 parts

This mod works differently from most in a modpack. It is a trainer management and battle API for Cobblemon, a library other mods build on, so it has no machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item automation to set up.[1]

It was developed as the foundation for the Radical Cobblemon Trainers mod. It also replaces the discontinued CobblemonTrainers dependency for Minecraft 1.21 and newer with Cobblemon 1.6 and newer. It is designed as an independent library, so other mods can use a subset of the same features.[1]

What the API handles

  • Trainer management and entity association through a trainer registry.[1]
  • Different battle formats, such as 1v1 SINGLE, 1v1 DOUBLE and 2v2 MULTI.[1]
  • Custom battle rules, for example a maximum number of item usages per battle.[1]
  • Trainer and Pokémon models (pojos) that are easy to parse, with converters to Cobblemon types.[1]
  • Model validation that collects all errors before an exception is thrown.[1]

Battle AI

The extended AI features are currently only supported by RCTBattleAI. It covers the usual battle activities, such as move selection and switching. Trainers can also carry and use items.[1]

The AI also supports gimmicks: Mega evolution, Dynamax, Z-Moves, Terastallization and others. Most gimmicks that are activated by held items need another mod to provide them. Mega Showdown is the example given, and it is also required for Dynamax and Gigantamax.[1]

Tip: If you are looking for something to craft or automate, this mod has nothing for it. It works behind the scenes, and mods like Radical Cobblemon Trainers use it for the trainers you actually battle.[1]

Unverified The sources do not cover this mod's in-pack items, recipes, configs or quests, or how the pack changes any of its behavior. Treat anything beyond the feature list above as unconfirmed.

What changed in Radical Cobblemon Trainers API between versions?

5 parts

All the Mons 1.3.0 ships Radical Cobblemon Trainers API 0.15.2-beta, and the mod has been in the pack since 0.3.0-beta or earlier. Below are the notable changes from the mod's own changelogs, newest first. The pack changelogs have no entries for this mod, so this page can't say which pack release picked up which version.[2]

0.15.2-beta (2026-04-19)

  • Fixed a battle error caused by an oversight in the earlier fix for using multiple gimmicks.[3]

0.15.0-beta (2026-03-21)

  • Trainers can now attend to multiple battles at the same time. A single trainer entity can still only attend to one battle, but a copy of that entity can attend to a different one.[4]
  • Battle AI tweaks: trainers are less likely to switch into pokemon with much higher stats, and less likely to waste healing items on squishy pokemon on the field.[4]
  • Trainers support custom sound events. The battleTheme property assigns a custom resource location, and it falls back to battle.pvn.default if unset.[4]
  • Battle AI fixes: it no longer tries Baton Pass when there is nothing to switch to, it counts active Light Screen and Reflect in damage calculations, and it recognizes heavy rain, extremely harsh sunlight and strong winds (so it stops picking fire or water moves that would fail).[4]
  • The BATTLE_STARTED event now receives the BattleState instead of null.[4]
  • For developers: new BattleInstance and TrainerNPC#getBattleInstances() were added, and deprecated overloads of TypeChart#getEffectiveness() were removed.[4]
  • From this version on, the API may only be redistributed under the MCOML License.[3][4]

0.14.8-beta (2026-02-14)

  • Fixed an oversight from a previous change that gave trainer pokemon random movesets.[5]

0.14.6-beta (2026-01-18)

  • BattleRules gained new properties: adjustNPCLevels and adjustPlayerLevels (whether levels are adjusted by the battle format's adjustLevel value, which the default formats do not do) and healPlayers (whether player pokemon are healed at the start of a battle).[6]
  • Fixed certain max moves of dynamaxed pokemon possibly softlocking battles.[6]
  • Fixed the Tera type stellar causing battle failures when evaluated defensively on the player side.[6]
  • For developers: a new BattleFormatProvider interface was added, and battle start methods now accept it instead of the BattleFormat enum (the old overloads still exist but are deprecated).[6]

0.14.5-beta (2025-12-27)

  • Gimmick priority was adjusted: if both are possible, Tera is now chosen after the dynamax/gmax transformation has ended.[7]
  • The battle AI switch evaluation was reworked, and the default RCTBattleAIConfig#switchBias changed to 0.5, which makes it a bit more impactful.[7]
  • Move selection improved for moves with certain requirements, such as Ally Switch or Trick.[7]
  • Battle AI fixes: First Impression is only used on the first turn, sacrificial moves like Explosion are avoided on the last pokemon, and the user of Block is no longer treated as trapped instead of the target.[7]
  • Fixed duplicate error messages when a battle fails to start.[7]
  • Fixed the gimmicks property of pokemon (tera, dynamax, gmax) not being applied in battle.[7]

Items and blocks

We can't match this mod to the pack's item list: it registers as rctapi, and the pack's recipe dump has nothing under that name. That means we found nothing, not that the mod adds nothing. Search the item browser
