What is Nature's Compass?

2 parts

Nature's Compass is a compass that finds biomes for you. Pick a biome you want to find and it points you toward the nearest one, anywhere in the world. It can also show you information about that biome. If you're hunting for a specific biome, this is the item to carry.[1]

What it does

  • Right-click with it to open the biome selection screen. From there you can search for a biome or read information about it.[1]
  • Shift-right-click to reset the compass's state.[1]
  • When it isn't pointing at a biome, it points at the world spawn.[1]
  • It supports all registered biomes, both vanilla and modded, so biomes added by other mods in the pack should show up too.[1]
  • Once a biome is found, info about it appears on the HUD.[1]

The mod's config file lets you adjust things like blacklisted biomes and the maximum search distance. The sources don't show whether this pack changed any of those values, so don't assume the defaults are what you'll get.[1]

Who it's for and where it fits

It's for anyone who wants a specific biome without wandering for hours. The pack points you to it through the quest "Compasses for Searching" quest in the "Tips and Poke Tricks" chapter. That quest explains the flow: select a biome from the list, hit Search, and the compass points the way while some info shows in the top left of your screen.[2]

The same quest also accepts the Explorer's Compass, which works the same way but finds structures instead of biomes. Use Nature's Compass for biomes and the Explorer's Compass for structures.[1][2]

The pack has included this mod since All the Mons 0.3.0-beta or earlier, and it runs on NeoForge for Minecraft 1.21.1.[3]

Unverified The pack's mod list shows Nature's Compass version 1.21.1-3.0.2-neoforge, but the jar file is named 3.0.3. Which exact version is installed is unconfirmed.

How do you get started with Nature's Compass?

3 parts

Good news: getting started with this mod is simple, because there is really only one item to make first. The Nature's Compass lets you search for a biome and then points you toward it, which saves a lot of aimless wandering when you're hunting for a particular spot.[1]

Craft the Nature's Compass

In this pack the compass has its own shaped crafting recipe, and it starts from a regular Minecraft compass. Here is the exact in-pack recipe:[4]

  1. Right-click with the compass to open the biome selection screen. From there you can search for a biome or view information about it.[1]
  2. Select a biome, then hit Search. Some info shows up in the top left, and the compass points in the direction of that biome.[2]
  3. Shift-right-click to reset the compass's state when you want to pick something else.[1]

If the compass isn't pointing at a biome, it points at the world spawn instead. So don't worry if it looks like it's aimed at nothing before your first search.[1]

The compass supports all registered biomes, vanilla and modded, so biomes added by other mods in the pack should show up in the list too.[1]

Use the quest as a pointer

The quest "Compasses for Searching" quest in the Tips and Poke Tricks chapter covers exactly this. It also mentions the Explorer's Compass, which works the same way but searches for structures instead of biomes. Either compass counts for that quest's task.[2]

Tip: Looking for a biome? Use the Nature's Compass. Looking for a structure? Use the Explorer's Compass. Same controls, different targets.[2]

The mod's config lets a pack adjust things like blacklisted biomes and the maximum search distance.[1]

How does Nature's Compass work?

4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.5 guide

Nature's Compass is a very simple mod: there are no machines, multiblocks, power or pipes. Everything revolves around one handheld item, Nature's Compass, which finds where a biome is anywhere in the world and shows you information about it.[1]

Getting the compass

The compass comes from a shaped crafting recipe from the mod itself. The block below shows the exact recipe this pack uses.[5]

Using the compass

  • Right-click with the compass to open the biome selection screen. From there you can search for a biome or view information about it.[1]
  • Shift-right-click to reset the compass. This clears whatever biome it was tracking.[1]
  • When the compass isn't pointing at a biome, it points at the world spawn, so a fresh or reset compass works as a way back to spawn.[1]
  • It supports all registered biomes, both vanilla and modded, so you can find biomes added by other mods in the pack too.[1]

Once a biome is found, its information appears on your HUD. In this pack General.displayCoordinates is turned on, so you get the precise coordinates and distance on screen. You don't have to follow the needle by eye.[1][6]

How the search works

Behind the scenes, the compass searches by taking samples of the world around you until it finds your biome or hits its limits. Three config options control this, and they all scale with the size of the biome you're searching for.[6]

  • General.maxSamples is the maximum number of samples taken in one search. This pack sets it to 50,000 (allowed range 0 to 1,000,000).[6]
  • General.radiusModifier sets how far the search can reach: the biome size multiplied by this value gives the maximum search radius. This pack uses 2,500. Raising it improves search accuracy but can make searches more resource intensive.[6]
  • General.sampleSpaceModifier sets how far apart the samples are: the biome size multiplied by this value gives the sample spacing. This pack uses 16. Lowering it improves accuracy but makes searches more resource intensive.[6]
Tip: If a search comes up empty, the biome may simply be beyond the search radius or sample limit. Travel a good distance in a new direction and try again from there.[6]

What's allowed in this pack

General.biomeBlacklist is empty in this pack, so no biomes are blocked from searching. The option accepts biome resource locations, and the wildcards * and ? let one entry match several biomes.[6]

Watch out: The mod can let players teleport to a located biome when they're in creative mode, opped, or have cheats enabled. This pack sets General.allowTeleport to false, so don't expect a teleport option here, even in creative.[6]

Unverified The sources don't show the mod's default values for the search settings, so it's unconfirmed whether this pack changed any of them from the defaults.

How do you progress through Nature's Compass?

2 parts

Nature's Compass doesn't have a tier ladder in this pack. It's a single utility item, and the pack's quest book covers it with one quest in the "Tips and Poke Tricks" chapter: "Compasses for Searching" quest.[2]

The quest

The quest task is to hand in either a Nature's Compass or an Explorer's Compass. The quest text explains how the Nature's Compass works: it gives you a list of biomes you can search for. You pick a biome, then hit Search. Some info shows up in the top left, and the compass points in the direction of that biome.[2]

The Explorer's Compass works the same way, but it searches for structures instead of biomes.[2]

How you get it

The pack has a single shaped crafting recipe for the Nature's Compass, and it comes from the mod itself. Here's the exact in-pack recipe:[4]

Crafting Shaped

Unverified No sources describe upgrade tiers, other compass variants, or config changes for Nature's Compass in this pack, so none are covered here.

Which All the Mons quests use Nature's Compass?

1 part

Same as in the All the Mons 1.3.0 guide

Nature's Compass appears in a single quest in the pack, so this section is short. It sits in the "Tips and Poke Tricks" chapter, and the quest is "Compasses for Searching" quest.[7]

Compasses for Searching

The quest is about finding biomes and structures. You complete it by handing in either Nature's Compass or the Explorer's Compass, and either one is enough.[7]

The quest text explains how the compass works. It gives you a list of biomes you can search for. You select a biome and hit 'Search.' Some info appears in the top left, and the compass points in the direction of that biome.[7]

The quest also says the Explorer's Compass works the same way, but it searches for structures instead of biomes.[7]

Tip: Use Nature's Compass when you're hunting for a particular biome, and the Explorer's Compass when you're after a structure.[7]

Which Nature's Compass config options matter?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Nature's Compass keeps its settings in one file, and the pack's values for it are below. Everything here lives under the General section. The mod's page confirms that things like blacklisted biomes and the maximum search distance can be adjusted in the config file.[1][8]

What the pack sets

  • General.allowTeleport is false in this pack. When enabled, it lets a player teleport to a located biome while in creative mode, opped, or in cheat mode. Here, that option is switched off.[8]
  • General.biomeBlacklist is an empty list in this pack, so no biomes are blocked from the compass's search. Entries are resource locations, and the wildcard * (any number of characters) and ? (one character) are supported.[8]
  • General.displayCoordinates is true in this pack. You see the precise coordinates and distance of a located structure on the HUD, instead of relying only on which way the compass points.[8]
  • General.maxSamples is 50,000 in this pack. It is the maximum number of samples taken when searching for a biome, with an allowed range of 0 to 1,000,000.[8]
  • General.radiusModifier is 2,500 in this pack, with an allowed range of 0 to 1,000,000. The biome size multiplied by this value gives the maximum search radius, and raising it increases search accuracy.[8]
  • General.sampleSpaceModifier is 16 in this pack, with an allowed range of 0 to 1,000,000. The biome size multiplied by this value gives the sample space. Lowering it increases search accuracy but makes the search more resource intensive.[8]

Tuning tips

If you want to hide certain biomes from the compass, add them to the blacklist. A pattern like minecraft:*ocean* would cover every matching ocean biome in one entry.[8]

Tip: The search settings trade accuracy against performance. Lowering the sample space modifier makes searches more accurate but more resource intensive, so change one value at a time and see how your game handles it.[8]

Unverified The sources only show this pack's values, not the mod's defaults, so I can't say which of these options the pack changed from the mod default.

What changed in Nature's Compass between versions?

Nature's Compass doesn't have much version history in this pack, so this section is short. The mod has been here since early on: it was first included in All the Mons 0.3.0-beta or earlier, and it is still in 0.17.0-beta.[3]

The only entry in the mod's own changelogs that I have is for version 1.21.1-3.0.2-neoforge, which says it was updated to NeoForge 1.21.1. That is the version the 0.17.0-beta mod list names.[3][9]

Tip: The mod list names Nature's Compass 1.21.1-3.0.2-neoforge, but the jar file in the pack is called NaturesCompass-1.21.1-3.0.3-neoforge.jar. If you are checking versions, expect to see 3.0.3 in the file name.[3]

Unverified No All the Mons changelog entries for Nature's Compass were available, so any pack-level changes to this mod between releases are unconfirmed.
