What is Additional Lights?

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Additional Lights is a lighting mod, and the pack ships version 2.1.10 of it. It is the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21, and the file is additional_lights-neoforge-1.21-2.1.10.jar.[1]

It has been in the pack since version 2.25 or earlier, so it is a long-standing part of the mod list rather than a recent addition.[1]

Unverified I couldn't confirm from the available sources which light blocks or items the mod adds, how they are crafted, or what config options exist. This page doesn't describe them. The sources also show no quests involving the mod and no place for it on the ATM Star path, so it doesn't appear to be a progression gate. Treat it as an optional decoration and lighting mod until more details are confirmed.

How do you get started with Additional Lights?

5 parts

Additional Lights adds lamps, AlTorches, fire pits and standing torches, each in lots of material variants. In this pack, 122 shaped crafting recipes make its items, so the trick is knowing where to start. Here is the order I'd go in.[2][3]

Start with an AlTorch

Make an Oak AlTorch first. One craft gives you 4, and the pack leaves this as the mod's own recipe, so nothing is changed here.[2]

The mod's own recipe, and one craft makes 4.

The other plain-material AlTorches follow the same pattern with a different base block, for example CobbleStone AlTorch, Glass AlTorch and Nether Bricks AlTorch. Pick whichever matches your build.[2][3]

Add a lamp

Next, craft an Oak Lamp. It also makes 4 per craft and is the mod's own recipe. Other lamps, like Stone Lamp and Glass Lamp, each have their own recipe too.[2][3]

Try the metal variants

The Iron, Gold and Diamond versions are where the pack steps in. It changed their recipes, so don't assume the mod's defaults apply. The Iron Lamp is a good one to try, and it makes 4 per craft.[2]

The metal AlTorches are changed by the pack too: Iron AlTorch, Gold AlTorch and Diamond AlTorch.[2]

Standing torches and fire pits

Once you have your lamps and AlTorches sorted, you can move on to the bigger pieces. The Iron Standing Torch and the Iron Fire Pit both have pack-changed recipes, shown below. Gold and Diamond versions exist for both, and so do the larger L versions, such as Iron Standing Torch - L and Iron Fire Pit - L.[2][3]

Soul items

The mod also has a Soul Fire For Standing Torch, which uses its own shapeless recipe, and a Soul Wand, whose recipe the pack changed. Both are worth a look once the basics are done.[2]

How does Additional Lights work?

3 parts

The sources for this pack show Additional Lights as a set of lighting blocks: lamps, AlTorches, fire pits and standing torches, plus fire blocks that go with the pits and torches. Each comes in many material variants, for example Glass Lamp, Iron AlTorch and Gold Fire Pit.[3]

Lamps

Lamps such as Acacia Lamp and Birch Lamp use plain mod recipes that the pack leaves as they are. One craft makes 4 lamps.[2]

The metal lamps are different. The pack changed the recipes for Iron Lamp, Gold Lamp and Diamond Lamp, and each craft makes 4 lamps. The exact in-pack recipes are shown below.[2]

AlTorches and fire pits

The metal AlTorches (Iron AlTorch, Gold AlTorch and Diamond AlTorch) have pack-changed recipes too, and each craft makes 4 of them.[2]

Fire blocks for standing torches

The pack runs a KubeJS server script that removes one Additional Lights recipe: the plain Fire For Standing Torch. The soul version, Soul Fire For Standing Torch, still has its mod recipe in this pack's recipe dump.[2][3][4]

Crafting Shapeless

Unverified The sources here do not show how these blocks behave in the world, such as light levels, placement rules or how the fire blocks attach to the pits and torches. No config files for this mod ship in the pack, so there is no config to point you to for those details.

How do you progress through Additional Lights?

3 parts

In this pack, Additional Lights progression comes down to the block you build each light from. The recipe sources show the same crafting patterns repeated across many materials, and the pack changes only some of them.[2]

Early tier: wood, stone and similar blocks

The lamps and AlTorches in wood, stone, glass, wool, ice, nether and end variants are plain mod recipes that the pack leaves alone. Examples are Oak Lamp, Stone Lamp and Stone Bricks AlTorch.[2]

The large fire pits in cobblestone, cut sandstone, end stone, nether bricks and similar blocks are also unchanged mod recipes. Examples are CobbleStone Fire Pit - L and Nether Bricks Fire Pit - L. The fire parts that go into pits and large standing torches, such as Fire For Fire Pit L, are plain mod recipes too.[2]

Iron, gold and diamond tier

This is where the pack steps in. The iron, gold and diamond versions of the lamp, AlTorch, fire pit (small and large) and standing torch (small and large) are all marked as changed by the pack. Examples are Iron Lamp, Gold Fire Pit and Diamond Standing Torch - L.[2]

These recipes take any block in the storage block tag for that metal, not one specific item.[2]

Soul Fire For Standing Torch is a mod recipe that the pack leaves unchanged. Separately, the pack's own script removes the recipe with the id additional_lights:fire_for_standing_torch_s, which is a different recipe from the soul fire one.[2][4]
