What is Ok Zoomer - It's Zoom!?

1 part

Ok Zoomer is a zoom mod that aims to be powerful, lean and customizable. You use it to get a closer look at distant builds, mobs or scenery, then tune how that zoom feels to suit you.[1]

This pack includes a beta build of the mod, in its Forge version.[2]

What you can do with it

  • The project page says the zoom key is bound to C by default, and that the default zoom favors a smooth transition between your interface and a clean view, which is handy for screenshots.[1]
  • You can open the settings with the /ok_zoomer command. The project page also mentions Mod Menu as an optional, more convenient way to reach the config screen.[1]
  • The project page lists presets such as Competitive (prioritizes your interface), Classic (emulates OptiFine's zoom) and Spyglass.[1]
  • You can also tweak options like Zoom Transition, Cinematic Camera and Zoom Divisor.[1]
Tip: The project page describes the mod in general, not only this pack's build. If the key binding or the preset names look different in your game, check your own controls and config screen.[1][2]

How do you get started with Ok Zoomer - It's Zoom!?

3 parts

Good news: Ok Zoomer is a zoom mod, so you don't need to craft or gather anything before you start. As the pack's config currently stands, the zoom works without a spyglass, so your first steps are all about learning the zoom key and seeing how the pack set it up.[1][3]

Unverified The sources here do not show any recipes or quests for this mod in this pack, so there is no craft-first step to point you to.

Step by step

  1. Hold the zoom key. It is bound to C by default, and the pack's config currently keeps controls.zoom_mode on HOLD, so the zoom only stays on while you keep the key down. TOGGLE and PERSISTENT are the other options.[1][3]
  2. Scroll the mouse wheel while zooming. zoom_scrolling.zoom_scrolling is currently on in the pack's config, so you can zoom in further or back out.[3]
  3. Keep an eye on the limit: zoom_scrolling.scroll_step_limit is set to 30, the maximum number of scroll steps the zoom may reach.[3]
  4. Press the middle mouse button to reset the zoom. zoom_scrolling.reset_zoom_with_mouse is currently on in the pack's config.[3]
  5. Let go of the key and the zoom ends. Because zoom_scrolling.forget_scroll_step is currently on in the pack's config, the scroll step is forgotten once you finish zooming.[3]
  6. Your next zoom starts from the default scroll step, and zoom_scrolling.default_scroll_step is currently 10 in the pack's config.[3]

What you will notice

Tweaking it your way

The mod page says you can run the /ok_zoomer command to pick a preset such as Competitive, Classic or Spyglass. If you have Mod Menu installed, that is another way to reach the config screen. The sources here do not show which values those presets use in this pack, so check the config file before you rely on them.[1]

Tip: In the pack's config, controls.extra_key_binds is currently on and adds extra zoom keys next to the main one. Changing it needs a game restart to take effect.[3]

How does Ok Zoomer - It's Zoom! work?

6 parts

Ok Zoomer is a zoom mod, so there are no machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item pipelines to set up here. The mechanics you care about are how the zoom behaves, and in this pack all of that currently lives in one config file. Every value below is currently the same as the mod's own default, so the pack leaves the zoom behaviour untouched.[1][3]

Activating the zoom

The mod's default zoom key is C. How the key behaves depends on controls.zoom_mode, which is currently set to HOLD in this pack: you zoom while the key is held. TOGGLE switches the zoom on and off with the key, and PERSISTENT keeps the zoom always on and uses the key for zoom scrolling instead.[1][3]

controls.spyglass_mode is currently OFF, so you do not need a spyglass to zoom, and the mod does not replace the spyglass's own zoom. The other options are REQUIRE_ITEM (a spyglass is needed, configurable through the ok_zoomer:zoom_dependencies item tag), REPLACE_ZOOM, and BOTH. controls.spyglass_sounds is currently off, so no spyglass sound effects play on alternating zoom.[3]

Zoom scrolling

With zoom_scrolling.zoom_scrolling currently on, you can change the zoom level with the mouse wheel. The curve is exponential: zoom_scrolling.scroll_base is currently 2 (the config says to keep it there if unsure), and zoom_scrolling.scroll_resolution is currently 5, which effectively multiplies the number of scroll steps.[3]

Each scroll increment is animated. zoom_scrolling.transition is SMOOTH and lasts the number of ticks in zoom_scrolling.transition_ticks, which is 8. The config notes that 20 ticks equal 1 second. The other styles are INSTANT, LINEAR, SINE, BALANCED and SPRING, and the config warns against using SPRING too often.[3]

Start and end transitions

Turning the zoom on and off is animated separately from scrolling. zoom_transition.start_transition and zoom_transition.end_transition are currently both SMOOTH, and both durations (zoom_transition.start_transition_ticks and zoom_transition.end_transition_ticks) are currently 8 ticks. They accept the same styles as scrolling. zoom_transition.invert_start_transition and zoom_transition.invert_end_transition can flip the curve and are currently both off.[3]

Tip: In the config file the descriptions of the start and end tick options are worded the other way round from their names. Both are currently 8 here, so it makes no difference in this pack as it stands, but check in game if you change one.[3]

What changes while you zoom

Keys and presets

controls.extra_key_binds is currently on, which adds zoom manipulation keys alongside the zoom key. The config says a game restart is needed for a change to apply. tweaks.unbind_conflicting_key is also currently on, so the "Save Toolbar Activator" keybind is unbound if it conflicts with the zoom key.[3]

The mod itself offers presets such as Competitive (prioritizes your interface), Classic (emulates OptiFine's zoom) and Spyglass. You can reach them through Mod Menu or the /ok_zoomer command, and the same screen lets you tweak options like Zoom Transition, Cinematic Camera and Zoom Divisor. The sources do not say whether Mod Menu is installed in this pack, so the command is the safer route.[1]

Minor tweaks

tweaks.numeric_sliders is on, so numeric options use sliders instead of number inputs, which trades number range for easier configuration. tweaks.debug_scrolling is off, but turning it on shows debug information that can help you tune zoom scrolling. tweaks.print_owo_on_start only prints a random owo in the console at startup and is on.[3]

Which Ok Zoomer - It's Zoom! config options matter?

4 parts

Good news: the pack's Ok Zoomer config matches the mod's own defaults for every option I can see. Nothing here was changed by the pack, so you get the standard Ok Zoomer feel. The mod binds the zoom key to C by default. The file doesn't set a key, so check your Controls menu if C doesn't work for you.[1][3]

Controls

  • In the pack's config file, controls.zoom_mode is "HOLD", so you keep the zoom key held to stay zoomed. "TOGGLE" switches the zoom on and off with the key. "PERSISTENT" keeps the zoom always on and uses the key for zoom scrolling.[3]
  • In the pack's config file, controls.spyglass_mode is "OFF", so you don't need a spyglass to zoom, and the vanilla spyglass zoom isn't replaced.[3]
  • In the pack's config file, controls.reduce_sensitivity is true, so your mouse sensitivity drops in proportion to how far you zoom in.[3]
  • In the pack's config file, controls.cinematic_camera is false. If you turn it on, zooming uses the game's cinematic camera, and controls.cinematic_camera_speed (set to 1 in the pack) controls its speed.[3]
  • In the pack's config file, controls.extra_key_binds is true, which adds zoom manipulation keys alongside the zoom key. Changing it needs a game restart.[3]

Scrolling

In the pack's config file, zoom_scrolling.zoom_scrolling is true, so the mouse wheel zooms in and out while you zoom. zoom_scrolling.reset_zoom_with_mouse is also true there, so the middle mouse button resets the zoom.[3]

Transitions

zoom_scrolling.transition, zoom_transition.start_transition and zoom_transition.end_transition are all "SMOOTH", and each lasts 8 ticks. The ticks options are zoom_scrolling.transition_ticks, zoom_transition.start_transition_ticks and zoom_transition.end_transition_ticks. 20 ticks equal 1 second. The alternatives are INSTANT, LINEAR, SINE, BALANCED and SPRING, and the file warns against using SPRING too often. zoom_transition.invert_start_transition and zoom_transition.invert_end_transition are both false.[3]

Appearance

Tip: You can change these options through Mod Menu or with the /ok_zoomer command. The mod page says this is also where you find presets such as Competitive, Classic and Spyglass.[1]

What changed in Ok Zoomer - It's Zoom! between versions?

5 parts

The pack ships the Forge build of Ok Zoomer - It's Zoom! that this changelog belongs to, and it has been in Project Infinity since 0.0.50.0 or earlier. The changes below are the ones you get in the pack right now.[2]

Changes in the shipped version

Zoom transitions and the config screen got the biggest overhaul, and there are some compatibility fixes too.[4]

Transitions and zoom feel

  • The transition system is now based on time instead of arbitrary values, and the "Linear" transition is now truly linear.[4]
  • Zoom transitions are split into a Start Transition, an End Transition and a Scroll Transition, so you can tune each one separately.[4]
  • New "Sine", "Balanced" and "Spring" transitions were added.[4]
  • The Cinematic Camera's Vanilla and Multiplied modes were merged, which also fixed a crash caused by the multiplied Cinematic Camera.[4]
  • The legacy zoom scrolling mode and the Legacy Zoom Values section were removed.[4]
  • Interface zooming, which was somewhat broken on Forge 1.20.1, was fixed.[4]

Configuration

  • The configuration was reorganized to be friendlier and easier to use, and the English text was rewritten to be much clearer.[4]
  • The new "Numeric Sliders" option replaces the number inputs with narrower but easier-to-configure sliders.[4]
  • The new "Zoominator" preset tries its best to replicate Zoomify's default zoom.[4]
  • Sodium's config screen is now supported.[4]
  • On Minecraft 1.20.1, "Unbind Conflicting Keys" was stripped down. It was removed on Forge and is config file-only on Fabric.[4]

Compatibility and under the hood

  • Wrench Wrapper was updated to 0.8.1, which fixed potential issues with compatibility layers like Sinytra and Kilt. Its config switched from TOML to JSON5, and the old config file stays intact.[4]
  • The Portals internal functionality was removed in favor of loader-agnostic code. This fixed Ok Zoomer being mandatory for clients when the server (LAN) has it installed.[4]
  • On Forge, the spyglass item check was replaced with a more efficient and more compatible one.[4]
  • The bundled MixinExtras dependency was switched to its slim variant, and the now-redundant Accessories compatibility code was removed.[4]
  • All classes moved to a new package, and lots of code was cleaned up.[4]

Translations

A French translation was added, and the Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese and Brazilian Portuguese translations were updated. The Simplified Chinese update was backported, so some strings may still be missing.[4]

Tip: If you tweaked your zoom in an older version, give the zoom settings a look. Transitions are now split into start, end and scroll, and the legacy scrolling mode is gone, so the feel may differ from what you remember.[4]
