What is More Mob Variants?
2 parts
More Mob Variants gives the older mobs in the game the kind of visual variety that newer mobs already have. Cats, chickens, cows, pigs, sheep, skeletons, spiders, wolves and zombies all get new looks on top of their default texture, so the overworld feels a bit fresher.[1]
Variants are stored through NBT, so they stay persistent across all players. Everything is data-driven too, which means the variants and features can be fully customised through datapacks.[1]
A few examples
- Chickens can be Amber, Bronzed, Midnight and more, and a rare Duck variant exists. A Skeleton chicken can show up if one spawns in the nether.[1]
- Cows include Ashen, Cookie and Umbra, plus a rare Albino that spawns in taigas.[1]
- Skeletons gain Dungeons-style and Weathered looks. Sandy ones are more common in deserts, and Mossy ones spawn in jungles, swamps and lush caves.[1]
- Wolves get breed-style variants such as Husky, German Shepherd and Golden Retriever, each made by breeding particular default or mod variants together. There is also a Skeleton wolf that comes from breeding in the nether.[1]
In this pack
The pack ships More Mob Variants 1.3.0.1, the Forge build for Minecraft 1.20.1. It has been in the pack since version 0.0.45.4 or earlier.[2]
The mod is meant to be installed on both server and client, although players without the mod can still join a server that has it.[1]
How do you get started with More Mob Variants?
3 parts
Good news: getting started with More Mob Variants takes no crafting. The mod currently adds new looks to older mobs that all looked the same, so the way in is playing and keeping an eye on the animals and monsters around you.[1]
What to do first
- Just play normally. The mod currently adds variants to the cat, chicken, cow, pig, sheep, skeleton, spider, wolf and zombie, so you will start spotting new looks on mobs you already know.[1]
- Look around your base animals. Chickens, cows, pigs and sheep each have several extra variants, and pigs can be muddy and sheep can have horns on any variant.[1]
- Travel through different biomes. Some of the variants the mod currently features are tied to where they spawn, so exploring is how you find them.[1]
- Try breeding wolves. Several of the wolf variants the mod currently features come from specific parent pairings.[1]
Where to find the location-based variants
- Currently, sandy skeletons are more common in deserts.[1]
- Currently, mossy skeletons spawn in jungles, swamps and lush caves.[1]
- Currently, albino cows are rare and spawn in taigas.[1]
- Currently, skeleton chickens show up if a chicken is spawned in the nether.[1]
- Currently, duck chickens and bone spiders are both listed as rare.[1]
Wolf breeding
Wolves currently get the most variety. The mod keeps all the default variants from 1.20.5 and adds more that come from breeding particular parent variants. For example, a Husky comes from black and ashen, or snowy and ashen, and a Jupiter comes from rusty and woods, or striped and woods. A Skeleton wolf comes from breeding in the nether.[1]
How does More Mob Variants work?
3 parts
This mod is about mob looks, not machines, power, fluids or automation. It currently adds new variants to older mobs, so the mechanics here are about how variants are stored, where certain ones show up, and how wolf breeding gets you specific ones.[1]
How variants work
- For the variants the mod currently features, they are added through NBT, so they are persistent across all players.[1]
- All variants and features are data-driven, so they can be fully customized through datapacks.[1]
- The mod has to be installed on both the server and the client. Clients without the mod can still join servers that have it.[1]
Conditional and rare variants
Some variants depend on where a mob is or how rare it is. These are the conditions the mod currently lists, and they are worth knowing when you go hunting.[1]
- Chickens can be a Skeleton variant if spawned in the nether, and the Duck variant is rare.[1]
- In the mod's current variant list, the Albino cow is rare and spawns in taigas.[1]
- In the mod's current variant list, Sandy skeletons are more common in deserts, and Mossy skeletons spawn in jungles, swamps and lush caves.[1]
- In the mod's current variant list, the Bone spider is rare.[1]
- Every pig variant can be muddy, and every sheep variant can have horns.[1]
Wolf breeding
Wolves are where breeding comes into play. The mod currently features all the default wolf variants from 1.20.5, plus new ones that it lists with parent pairs:[1]
- Basenji: jupiter + golden retriever, or rusty + ashen (as currently listed).[1]
- French Bulldog: husky + golden retriever, or rusty + golden retriever (as currently listed).[1]
- German Shepherd: jupiter + husky, or woods + chestnut (as currently listed).[1]
- Golden Retriever: jupiter + pale (default), or rusty + pale (default) (as currently listed).[1]
- Husky: black + ashen, or snowy + ashen (as currently listed).[1]
- Jupiter: rusty + woods, or striped + woods (as currently listed).[1]
- Skeleton: breeding in the nether (as currently listed).[1]
