What is Inventory Sorter (Configurable)?

2 parts

Inventory Sorter (Configurable) does one job: it sorts the contents of your inventory and containers with a single click. Middle click does it, or you can set a custom hotkey. It is a fork of the original Inventory Sorter by cpw, built to be a drop-in replacement for it.[1]

This pack ships version 23.1.9 (the 1.20.1 build). It has been in the pack since 0.0.45.4 or earlier.[2]

How the sorting works

The default sort order is ported from Quark's Inventory Sorting feature. The one difference is that torches come before foods. You can change the order in the config file. The available options are Quark, Creative Tab (which may not be 100% accurate), Raw Item ID (registered order), Item (Original) Name and Item Display Name. You can also sort by count first, like the original mod, and then fall back to one of those options when the counts match. Depending on the config, a relaunch might be needed after you change it.[1]

The mod has to be installed on both client and server. The client doesn't sort anything itself, it hands the work to the server. It tries to respect canExtract and isItemValid, so it avoids slots marked that way.[1]

What this fork changes

  • A failsafe stops items from being deleted in certain scenarios, notably with Curios slots.[1]
  • There is an option to stop the hotbar from being sorted, and it is enabled by default.[1]
  • You can abort sorting based on the first slot type. The default is [SlotIronFurnaceInput], which comes from Iron Furnace.[1]
  • The scroll wheel function from the original was removed.[1]
Watch out: The fork's author says they don't test it on multiplayer servers, so there may be issues that the original mod didn't have.[1]

How do you get started with Inventory Sorter (Configurable)?

2 parts

Good news: you don't need to craft anything to start using this mod. No recipes in this pack produce its items, so there is no crafting order to follow. It works on the inventories you already have.[1]

Sorting your first inventory

Open any inventory or chest and sort it with a middle click or with a custom hotkey. The key binding is named "Sort inventory", so you can rebind it to whatever suits you.[1][3]

The default sort order is ported from Quark's Inventory Sorting feature. The mod's config file also lets you choose other orders, such as creative tab order, raw item ID, item name or display name. You can also sort by count first.[1]

Tip: Your hotbar is not sorted by default, because the option that prevents hotbar sorting is enabled by default.[1]
Watch out: The mod needs to be installed on both the client and the server. It does the sorting on the server and doesn't try to sort on the client.[1]

What this pack changes

The pack ships its own server config with a few blacklist settings. Containers on the container blacklist are meant to be skipped by sorting.[4]

If a modded container doesn't sort the way you expect, the mod has a container debug option. It creates log messages when a container is being sorted, which helps when compiling a blacklist.[3]

How does Inventory Sorter (Configurable) work?

4 parts

Inventory Sorter (Configurable) has no machines, multiblocks, power or fluids. It is a sorting utility: you open a container or your inventory, trigger a sort, and the items get rearranged. Here is how that works.[1]

Triggering a sort

You sort with a middle click or with a custom hotkey, which shows up in the controls menu as "Sort inventory". The old scroll wheel sorting was removed.[1][3]

The mod needs to be installed on both the client and the server. It doesn't sort on your client at all. The server does all the work, which keeps it reliable and fast. It should work with all containers, and it tries to respect canExtract and isItemValid, so it avoids slots marked that way.[1]

Sort order

The default order is ported from Quark's Inventory Sorting feature. The one difference is that torches come before foods. You can pick from these orders in the config file (it might need a relaunch, depending on the config):[1]

  • Quark[1]
  • Creative Tab, which could be not 100% accurate[1]
  • Raw Item ID (registered order), the same as the default order in JEI and similar on older versions[1]
  • Item (original) name[1]
  • Item display name[1]

You can also sort by count first, like the original mod, and then use one of the orders above to break ties when counts are equal.[1]

Safety features

This fork adds a failsafe that prevents items from being deleted in certain scenarios, notably with Curios slots. It also has an option to stop the hotbar from being sorted, which is enabled by default in the mod.[1]

Blacklists in this pack

Some containers don't play well with sorting, so the mod lets you exclude them. This pack sets the following blacklist options in the server config.[4]

  • blacklists.abortOnFirstSlotTypes aborts sorting if the first slot is one of the listed types. The pack sets it to SlotIronFurnaceInput, which matches the mod's default and comes from Iron Furnace.[1][4]
  • blacklists.containerBlacklist is set by the pack to the Botanical Extra Machinery greenhouse: its container id botanicalextramachinery:greenhouse and its container class ContainerGreenhouse. That container is on the blacklist.[4]
  • blacklists.slotBlacklist is a slot type blacklist, and the pack leaves it empty.[4]
Tip: If a modded container sorts badly, the mod has a container debug option that creates log messages whenever a container is sorted. It is meant to help you work out what to add to the blacklists.[3]

Which Inventory Sorter (Configurable) config options matter?

2 parts

Inventory Sorter has only a handful of options, and they split across two files. Sorting behaviour lives in the client file, and the blacklists live in the server file. Here is how this pack sets each one.[4][5]

Sorting rules (client config)

  • sortingRules.sortOrder is set to "QUARK" in this pack. The allowed values are QUARK, CREATIVE, ITEM_ID, ITEM_NAME and DISPLAY_NAME. The mod's default sort order is ported from Quark's Inventory Sorting feature, so this pack uses that Quark-style ordering.[1][5]
  • sortingRules.sortByCountFirst is false, so stack size is not the first thing the sorter looks at.[5]
  • sortingRules.excludeHotbar is true, so your hotbar is left alone when you sort. The mod's hotbar-protection option is enabled by default, so the pack hasn't changed it.[1][5]
Tip: If you'd rather sort by a different rule, change sortOrder to one of the allowed values listed above. Other values are not accepted.[5]

Blacklists (server config)

  • blacklists.abortOnFirstSlotTypes is set to SlotIronFurnaceInput. If the first slot of a container is one of these types, sorting is aborted. This matches the mod's own default, which was added for Iron Furnace.[1][4]
  • blacklists.containerBlacklist lists botanicalextramachinery:greenhouse and net.lmor.botanicalextramachinery.blocks.containers.ContainerGreenhouse in this pack. Both are the greenhouse container from Botanical Extra Machinery, so sorting is blocked there.[4]
  • blacklists.slotBlacklist is an empty list, so no slot types are blacklisted.[4]

What changed in Inventory Sorter (Configurable) between versions?

1 part

Project Infinity 0.1 0.0.51.4-hotfix-2 ships Inventory Sorter (Configurable) 23.1.9. The mod was first included in version 0.0.45.4 or earlier. I have no pack changelog entries for this mod, so the only notable changes I can point to come from the mod's own 23.1.9 changelog.[2]

23.1.9

  • Added an option to stop the hotbar from being sorted. The mod's changelog says this is enabled by default, but it does not say whether the pack changes that.[6]
  • Added an option to abort sorting based on the first slot type.[6]
  • With that option you can blacklist Iron Furnace, and the changelog says it is blacklisted by default now. Again, it does not say whether the pack overrides this.[6]

Items and blocks

We can't match this mod to the pack's item list: it registers as inventorysorter, and the pack's recipe dump has nothing under that name. That means we found nothing, not that the mod adds nothing. Search the item browser
