What is Gardens of the Dead?

Gardens of the Dead adds new spooky biomes to the Nether. It was created for Spooky Jam 2022, and alongside the biomes it brings new plants and decorative blocks.[1]
Right now it adds 2 biomes: the Soulblight Forest and the Whistling Woods. The mod's page says more biomes will eventually be added, possibly with new mobs, but that is a plan for the future and not something you can use today.[1]

The pack ships Gardens of the Dead 4.0.4 (the Forge build). It was first included in version 0.0.45.4 or earlier, so it has been around for a while.[2]
How do you get started with Gardens of the Dead?

Gardens of the Dead adds new spooky biomes to the Nether, plus plants and decorative blocks to build with. At the moment it adds two biomes: the Soulblight Forest and the Whistling Woods. So your first job is simple: head to the Nether and find them.[1][3]
The recipes below are all listed as the mod's own recipes, so what you see in the recipe viewer is what the mod itself provides.[4]
Step by step
- Get hold of Soulblight Stem and Whistlecane. These two feed the planks recipes, so they are your building materials.[3][4]
- Turn Soulblight stems into Soulblight Planks. The recipe accepts any item from the Soulblight stems group and gives you 4 planks.[4]
- Whistlecane gets its own Whistlecane Planks too, by way of a Block of Whistlecane. Both recipes are shown below.[4]
- Once you have planks, branch out into the building pieces: stairs, slabs, doors, trapdoors, fences, fence gates, buttons, pressure plates and signs.[4]

If you spot a Tall Blistercrown, you can craft it into 3 Blistercrown, which turns one find into more plants for decorating.[4]
How does Gardens of the Dead work?

This is the short section, and that's by design. Gardens of the Dead is a worldgen and decoration mod: it adds new spooky Nether biomes, plus new plants and decorative blocks. Currently the mod adds two biomes, the Soulblight Forest and the Whistling Woods.[1][3]
The sources for this pack show no machines, multiblocks, power, fluid or item handling for this mod, so there's nothing to automate here. What you do have is crafting, which is covered below.[1][3][4]
Crafting works like vanilla wood
Every recipe from this mod in the pack is a plain crafting grid recipe, shaped or shapeless. Soulblight planks come out four at a time, and the recipe accepts anything in the mod's soulblight stems tag.[4]

Whistlecane wood starts from the plant. The recipes below turn Whistlecane into a Block of Whistlecane, and then into Whistlecane Planks.[4]

How do you progress through Gardens of the Dead?

Good news and a heads-up: in this pack, Gardens of the Dead has no gear tiers to climb. The recipes only cover two building-block families, Soulblight and Whistlecane, plus one plant item. Every recipe is listed as a plain mod recipe, so none of them shows a pack change.[4]
Soulblight wood
Everything starts with the stems. Any item from the soulblight stems group gives you Soulblight Planks. A Soulblight Stem also has a Soulblight Hyphae version, and a Stripped Soulblight Stem has a Stripped Soulblight Hyphae version. Both hyphae recipes are shown below the planks.[4]
