What is FastWorkbench?
2 parts
FastWorkbench is a performance mod for crafting. It targets the freeze you could get from shift-click crafting a whole stack of items, a bug that came in with Minecraft 1.12, and it does a bit more than just that fix.[1]
Every crafting operation caches the last recipe used. Vanilla re-checks the recipe whenever anything in the grid changes, even just a stack size. FastWorkbench only re-checks when the stored item in the crafting matrix actually changes. That cuts the matching work down to one operation, instead of anywhere between one and nearly 600.[1]
What you will notice in game
The mod is applied to both the 2x2 grid in your inventory and the 3x3 crafting table grid. Other mods that use the same workbench container get the benefits too.[1]
On 1.13 and higher, FastWorkbench visually removes the recipe book button by default. If you miss it, the mod can be configured to bring it back.[1]
In this pack
The pack ships FastWorkbench 8.0.4, built for Minecraft 1.20.1. It was already in the pack by version 0.0.45.4 or earlier.[2]
How do you get started with FastWorkbench?
2 parts
Good news: FastWorkbench is a mod you don't have to set up. It is a performance mod for crafting, so there is no first item to craft and no recipe block to show here. It starts working on the crafting grids you already use.[1]
What it does for you
The mod is applied via Mixin to the classes behind the 2x2 grid in your inventory and the 3x3 grid on the crafting table. Any other mod that uses the same workbench container gets the benefits too.[1]
It remembers the last recipe you used. It also only re-checks the recipe when the item stored in the crafting grid actually changes, where vanilla retries on every change, such as a stack size. That cuts the matching work down to one operation instead of anywhere between one and nearly 600. It also fixes the shift-click crafting freeze that came in with Minecraft 1.12.[1]
Settings worth knowing
The pack ships a small config file with three options, and all three are at the mod's defaults.[3]
- [[config:config/fastbench.cfg#general.Remove Recipe Book Button]] is true, so the recipe book button is hidden. The mod only removes it visually, and you can turn it back on by setting this to false.[1][3]
- [[config:config/fastbench.cfg#general.Grid Update Interval]] is 2 ticks, with an allowed range of 1 to 100. It is the tick interval at which pooled grid updates run, and duplicate updates within that interval are squashed.[3]
- [[config:config/fastbench.cfg#general.Disable tooltip on crafting table]] is false, so the crafting table tooltip is still shown.[3]
How does FastWorkbench work?
4 parts
FastWorkbench is a performance mod, not a machine mod. There is no power, fluid or multiblock system to learn here. It speeds up everything crafting-related, and the sources describe it as a major optimization for the Crafting Table. It also fixes a bug from Minecraft 1.12 where shift-click crafting a stack of items could cause momentary freezes.[1]
How crafting is sped up
Every crafting operation caches the last recipe used. The mod also only re-checks for a recipe when the stored item in the crafting matrix actually changes. Vanilla retries every time anything changes, even something like stack size.[1]
The result is that the number of matching operations drops to one, where vanilla could do anywhere between one and nearly 600. You will notice it most when shift-click crafting big stacks.[1]
Which crafting grids it covers
The mod is applied via Mixin to PlayerContainer, which is the 2x2 grid, and to WorkbenchContainer, which is the 3x3 grid. Any other mod that uses WorkbenchContainer gets the full benefits too. Mods that don't use it should already be doing these optimizations themselves, according to the project page.[1]
Recipe book button
In 1.13 and higher, recipes are synced anyway as part of the newer recipe system. FastWorkbench therefore only visually removes the recipe book button by default, and it can be configured back on. In this pack, [[config:config/fastbench.cfg#general.Remove Recipe Book Button]] is true, which is also the mod default, so the button is hidden.[1][3]
Config options
- [[config:config/fastbench.cfg#general.Grid Update Interval]] is the tick interval at which all pooled grid updates run. Duplicate updates within the interval are squashed. The pack sets it to 2, the same as the mod default, and the allowed range is 1 to 100.[3]
- [[config:config/fastbench.cfg#general.Remove Recipe Book Button]] controls whether the recipe book button is removed. The pack sets it to true, matching the mod default.[3]
- [[config:config/fastbench.cfg#general.Disable tooltip on crafting table]] controls whether the crafting table has a tooltip. The pack sets it to false, matching the mod default.[3]
The mod's language file also contains playful descriptions such as "Fastest table in the West" and "Faster than the average table".[4]
Which FastWorkbench config options matter?
4 parts
FastWorkbench has only three options, all in config/fastbench.cfg under the general category. This pack leaves every one of them at the mod default, so nothing here has been changed from what you'd get with the mod on its own.[3]
Recipe book button
[[config:config/fastbench.cfg#general.Remove Recipe Book Button]] is set to true in this pack, which is also the mod default. That hides the recipe book button. The mod only removes it visually, because on modern versions the recipes are synced to you anyway. If you want the button back, set this option to false.[1][3]
Grid update interval
[[config:config/fastbench.cfg#general.Grid Update Interval]] is set to 2 in this pack, matching the mod default. It is the tick interval at which all pooled grid updates run, and duplicate updates inside that interval are squashed into one. The allowed range is 1 to 100.[3]
Crafting table tooltip
[[config:config/fastbench.cfg#general.Disable tooltip on crafting table]] is false in this pack, the same as the mod default. The file describes it as controlling whether the crafting table has a tooltip, and with the value at false nothing is disabled.[3]
Quick reference
What changed in FastWorkbench between versions?
Project Infinity 0.1 0.0.51.4-hotfix-2 ships FastWorkbench 8.0.4 (the FastWorkbench-1.20.1-8.0.4.jar file). The mod was already in the pack in 0.0.45.4 or earlier, so it isn't a recent addition.[2]
Unverified The notable changes between FastWorkbench versions could not be confirmed, because the mod changelog text wasn't available to this guide. The pack changelogs have no entries for this mod either, so there is no confirmed record of the pack changing it.

Items and blocks
We can't match this mod to the pack's item list: it registers as fastbench, and the pack's recipe dump has nothing under that name. That means we found nothing, not that the mod adds nothing. Search the item browser
