Apothic Enchanting: eterna stops short, and every slot says Limited Enchantability

Limited Enchantability is not about your item's enchantability number. It means the table had nothing to offer that slot, so raising enchantability is not the fix.

The short answer

  1. Your eterna stops below 100. Two different caps can do that, and they need different fixes. Go to Your eterna stops short of 100.

  2. A slot says "Limited Enchantability", sometimes every slot, on every item. That is not the same problem, and it is not about eterna. Go to Every slot says Limited Enchantability.

A few terms first:

  • Eterna: the enchanting table's magical energy. The mod's own tooltip says "Sets the max enchanting level". The bar shows "Current Value: %s/%s".

  • Max Eterna: an attribute on you, the player, apothic_enchanting:max_eterna. Its own description reads "The maximum amount of Eterna you can use in an Enchanting Table." It never adds anything; it only trims what the table gives you.

  • World Tier: an Apotheosis progression rank. In this pack it is what lowers your Max Eterna.

  • Primary item: an item that a given enchantment is meant for, listed in a tag such as #minecraft:enchantable/bow. This decides what the table can offer you, and it is the heart of the second problem.

Written for Apothic Enchanting 1.6.2, Apotheosis 8.8.0. This pack ships Apotheosis 8.9.0. Some steps may no longer match. Changelog: Apotheosis 8.9.0

On this page

Applies to Apothic Enchanting 1.6.2 and Apotheosis 8.8.0, Minecraft 1.21.1, NeoForge 21.1.251, as shipped in All the Mods 10 8.2.

Both mods matter here, and they are separate jars. Apotheosis is what puts a World Tier cap on your eterna, and it is also why the enchanting screen words the message the way it does in this pack.

Your eterna stops short of 100

There are two caps, and they are separate. One is on you, one is on your shelves. Work out which one you have before you change anything.

First: read the line under the eterna bar

On All the Mods 10 8.2 the screen says, word for word:

Limited to 60 by your World Tier (CTRL+T)

with your own cap in place of 60.

If you came here from a post that says something else, that is the same message. Older versions said "Clamped to %s by your Max Eterna attribute". That wording was replaced on 19 August 2026, and the replacement first shipped in Apothic Enchanting 1.6.0, so a search for "clamped to" will not match what this pack shows. There is also a second wording still in the mod, "Limited to %s by your Max Eterna attribute", which is what the screen uses when Apotheosis is not installed. All three are the same cap.

Cap 1: your World Tier sets your Max Eterna

The attribute starts at 100. Apotheosis ships one augment per tier that subtracts from it:

World TierYour Max Eterna
Haven30
Frontier45
Ascent60
Summit75
Pinnacle100

So "limited to 60" is World Tier: Ascent, which takes 40 off the base of 100.

The fix is to raise your World Tier. Press CTRL+T to open the World Tier select screen (the keybind is "Open World Tier Select"). A tier has to be activated there once you have unlocked it. The mod's own tutorial text says so: "For all other World Tiers, you need to return here and activate them yourself."

Tiers unlock through advancements:

  1. Haven: obtain an affixed item.

  2. Frontier: obtain a rarity-bearing item.

  3. Ascent: kill an Apothic Invader.

  4. Summit: kill the Wither, plus another criterion.

  5. Pinnacle: equip an epic or mythic chest item, plus more.

These are the criteria names, not the full requirements. Apotheosis also has a mode where a pack activates tiers for you and you cannot change them by hand. Nothing in All the Mods 10 8.2 was found turning that on, so on the evidence you activate them yourself.

All the Mods 10 8.2 does not override the tier augments. Another mod or datapack could add its own, and only the pack's own files were checked.

Cap 2: each shelf has its own eterna ceiling

This is the one nobody names, and it is why raising your tier can change nothing.

Every eterna-giving block carries its own ceiling as well as its own eterna value. The table adds shelves up lowest-ceiling-first, and each group can only push the total as far as its own ceiling. So a room full of Endshelves stops at 90 no matter what your tier is, and "80/100" can be a shelf problem rather than a tier problem. The table's total is also clamped to the range 0 to 100 whatever you build.

Only the Draconic Endshelf reaches 100. If your total stalls at 90 with a wall of Endshelves, or at 60 or 75 with the middle shelves, that is this cap, and no World Tier will move it.

Three things that table will not tell you, and each of them explains a real room.

  • A block with no entry of its own has a ceiling of 30. That is the mod's default, and it covers the plain vanilla Bookshelf. So a wall of ordinary bookshelves stops at 30, and so do the two Hellshelves of Sight, which look like upgrades and give no eterna at all.

  • The Brass Bookshelf is the one a player configures. You set its stat and its value from panels on the block, and its ceiling comes from its own mod's config rather than from Apothic: 25 by default for one of them, which is lower than every shelf in the table above and lower than every World Tier. So a single Brass Bookshelf carries a ceiling of 25, and nothing in Apothic explains where that number came from. What more than one of them does is a separate setting and nobody has read its rule, so this page does not say what a room built on them stops at.

  • The zero-eterna entries. Skulls, wall skulls and Occultism's candles all carry an entry and contribute no eterna. They are not a way to raise a total.

Before either cap: a shelf only counts if the gap in front of it is clear

If you have plenty of shelves and a low total, this is the first thing to check, and it is not a cap at all.

A block only adds its eterna when both of these are true:

  1. It sits at one of the enchanting table's own shelf positions. Apothic Enchanting uses vanilla's list and adds no extra range and no config for it.

  2. The block between it and the table, at that shelf's own height, is air or another replaceable block. That is the vanilla tag #minecraft:enchantment_power_transmitter, which is #minecraft:replaceable: air, water, lava, snow, vines, glow lichen, short grass, fire and about two dozen others.

So the gap does not have to be air. Water, snow, vines or glow lichen all transmit. A slab, a carpet, a chest or a second shelf does not, and that is what a low total on a full-looking room usually is. Nine mods in this pack add to replaceable and Occultism adds its chalk glyphs to the transmitter tag directly, so treat it as "air or another replaceable block" rather than a closed list.

Anything a mod gives enchanting power to counts, at twice its vanilla power value, even if it is not in the table above.

Not established: the exact positions the table reads from. They are vanilla code rather than data, so nobody has been able to cite the list. The rule above is settled; the geometry is not, and this page will not print a coordinate list.

How to tell which one you have

  1. Start with the cheap one: which of your blocks has already finished? Every eterna-giving block stops contributing at its own ceiling, and the lowest ceiling in the room is used up first. So a mixed room sits between two numbers, with the low-ceiling shelves finished and the rest still climbing: Seashelves at their ceiling of 45 plus two Endshelves sit at 55, and more Seashelves will not move that. Read the Eterna and ceiling columns above and add blocks whose ceiling is above your total now, not more of the ones that have already finished. And if the room already looks full, check the gaps first: that costs nothing, and a blocked gap is the commonest reason a full room reads low.

  2. Does the screen name your World Tier, and does your total stop at 30, 45, 60 or 75? That is cap 1. Raise and activate your tier.

  3. Is your tier allowing more than you are getting? Then it is your blocks, and the number to look at is the highest ceiling in the room: that is the one your total finally rests against. A wall of one shelf type stops at that shelf's ceiling, whatever the number is, up to the Draconic Endshelf at 100. Add blocks with a higher ceiling. Do not pull out the low ones. A low-ceiling shelf is used up first, which means it is supplying the base the rest build on, not holding you down: take the Seashelves out of that 55 and you are left with two Endshelves and a total of 10. The one block worth removing is a negative one, and it is the only kind that can lower a total: see the Beeshelf.

  4. Both caps can be true at once. Fixing one leaves the other in place.

Why this page no longer gives you a list of cap numbers to check yours against. An earlier version did, and it was wrong in three ways at once. A Beeshelf in the room produces totals no ceiling explains (see below). A Brass Bookshelf produces 25, which is in no Apothic table. And any mod or datapack can add a block with a ceiling of its own, so a list is only ever a description of one pack at one version, and it goes out of date without anything on this page changing. The mechanism does not: the lowest ceiling among your blocks is used up first, and the highest one is what your total finally rests against.

The Beeshelf, and why a total can be lower than any ceiling

A negative-eterna block is not capped, and it is subtracted before anything else is added. Three blocks carry negative eterna, all with a ceiling of 0: the Melonshelf at -2, the Stoneshelf at -3 and the Beeshelf at -30. Ceiling 0 sorts first, so the total is already negative when the first real group of shelves is capped against it. The final figure is then clamped to 0 to 100, so a room that works out negative simply shows 0.

Computed, not estimated:

RoomEterna shown
15 Endshelves75.0
14 Endshelves and 1 Beeshelf40.0
14 Hellshelves and 1 Beeshelf12.0
14 Draconic Endshelves and 1 Beeshelf100.0
1 Beeshelf on its own0.0

Two things to take from that. A Beeshelf costs 35, not 30, when it takes a shelf's place: 30 for itself and 5 for the shelf that is no longer there. And in a maxed room it costs nothing at all - 14 Draconic Endshelves supply 280 eterna against a ceiling of 100, so taking 30 off still leaves 100. That is why a player who knows the mod will tell you to put one in: +100 quanta for no eterna, once the rest of the room is far enough over its own ceiling to absorb it.

So a total that matches no ceiling is worth looking at twice. 40 is a ceiling in the table above, and the room that shows 40 in the row above is nowhere near a ceiling: its Endshelves are at 90 and the fix is to take the Beeshelf out, not to add shelves.

If none of the four describes your screen, this page does not explain your number. See Unresolved for what was checked and what was not.

Every slot says Limited Enchantability

It means the table had no enchantment to offer for that slot. It is not a comment on your item's enchantability number, despite the name.

The text is NeoForge's, not Apothic Enchanting's:

Limited Enchantability

Apothic Enchanting reuses it, and the slot is greyed out at the same time.

One condition on that, and it decides whether this section is yours. The slot is greyed and the line is shown when the table found nothing for that slot while the slot still has a level. If your slots show no level at all, this is not your section: eterna is what sets the slot levels, in the mod's own words "Sets the max enchanting level". Go to Your eterna stops short of 100 and start at test 1, the cheap one.

What actually decides it

For a slot to offer something, an enchantment has to pass both of these:

  1. Your item is a primary item for that enchantment. That is a tag, for example #minecraft:enchantable/bow.

  2. The slot's power is inside that enchantment's power window. In practice that means the power has to reach the enchantment's minimum. The maximum defaults to 200 for every enchantment, so the minimum is the binding one.

Before that, the pool is limited to enchantments in #minecraft:enchantment/in_enchanting_table, minus anything your shelves blacklist, minus anything the item already has. Treasure enchantments only appear if a shelf allows them.

The item's enchantability number does two other things entirely: it has to be above 0 for the item to be enchantable at all, and it feeds a bonus-level roll after the enchantments have been chosen.

Why anything can go in the table and then refuse to enchant

Apothic Enchanting makes every item's enchantment value 1, with the stated reason "Enables all items to be enchantable by default", and forces the damageable check to pass. So you can put anything in the table. Whether the table can offer anything is the primary-item and power test above.

The three items this pack takes out of the enchanting tags

All the Mods 10 8.2 removes these from the vanilla enchantable tags in its own script:

  • Allthemodium Bow, removed from minecraft:enchantable/bow

  • Unobtainium Crossbow, removed from minecraft:enchantable/crossbow

  • Vibranium Shield, removed from minecraft:enchantable/equippable

  • plus a long list of Dyenamics and Friends carved pumpkins, removed from enchantable/equippable, enchantable/vanishing and enchantable/armor

Each of those three items is in exactly two item tags in the whole pack, and the script removes it from both. The bow loses c:tools/bow and minecraft:enchantable/bow; the crossbow loses c:tools/crossbow and minecraft:enchantable/crossbow; the shield loses c:tools/shield and minecraft:enchantable/equippable. Afterwards each one is in no enchantable/* tag at all, and there is no indirect route in: the vanilla enchantable/* tags nest only into armour, sword, axe, pickaxe, shovel and hoe tags, and none of those can hold a bow, a crossbow or a shield.

So every slot shows "Limited Enchantability" for these three, at any eterna level, while the table still accepts the item. That is checked rather than assumed: every item-tag file in all 464 jars this pack ships was searched for the three item ids, along with the pack's own scripts and vanilla's 19 enchantable/* tags. The carved pumpkins needed three removals because a carved pumpkin is in three tags; these needed two and got two.

The shield loses three enchantments on top of that. Reflective Defenses, Shield Bash and Mirror Shield target c:tools/shield directly, so the Vibranium Shield cannot be offered them either.

This is a pack decision, not a fault, and there is nothing in game that fixes it. The pack took those items out of those tags on purpose. Do not rebuild your shelf room over it.

What to do on any other item

  1. Use an item that is a primary item for something the table can offer.

  2. Raise eterna until the slot's power reaches the minimum of an enchantment that applies to it. See Your eterna stops short of 100.

  3. Check whether your shelves blacklist the enchantment you are after.

If you have done all three and every slot still says it, this page does not explain your case. See Unresolved for what was checked and what was not, including one reported case that could not be reproduced from files.

What this pack changes about enchanting

Worth knowing before you compare your game with a wiki or a video.

  • The config file is config/apotheosis/enchantments.cfg. Apothic Enchanting still reads its configs from the old config/apotheosis/ folder even though its mod id is now apothic_enchanting. All the Mods 10 8.2 ships 117 enchantment entries in it.

  • Max levels are raised well above vanilla: Power 9 (vanilla 5), Sharpness 9 (5), Unbreaking 8 (3), Punch 5 (2), Farmer's Delight Backstabbing 8 (3), among others.

  • No entry sets a power function. Every one is blank, so the default applies: a maximum of 200 and a minimum derived from vanilla's curve. Above an enchantment's vanilla max level that minimum grows quickly, which is why the high levels this pack unlocks need a lot of eterna. Anything not in the file falls back to its vanilla max level.

  • Miner's Fervor is disabled outright by the pack, both as an enchantment and by removal from the non-treasure tag.

  • The shelf stats and the World Tier augments are unchanged from the jars.

Unresolved

  • The bonus enchantment level roll in 1.6.2 reads as broken. For any item with enchantability below 80 the roll works out to NaN, so the bonus never happens, and where the number is real, a higher enchantability makes the bonus less likely, which is the opposite of the code comment above it. Apothic itself sets most items to 1, so most items are in the first case. This is Delve's reading of the code, not a maintainer statement, and it has not been tested in game. A maintainer comment or an in-game test would settle it. The mod's newer branch has commits reworking enchantability, for a later Minecraft version; none of that is in 1.6.2.

  • The plain bow case above, which could not be reproduced from files.

  • Whether an earlier All the Mods 10 shipped Apothic Enchanting 1.5.x, where the "Clamped to..." wording comes from. Older pack manifests were not read.

  • Whether tier activation is automatic here. Nothing in this pack was found turning that mode on, but that is an absence of evidence rather than a check of every mod.

  • The exact positions the table reads a shelf from. They live in vanilla's code rather than in a data file, so nobody has been able to cite the list. The rule is settled and is on this page; the geometry is not, which is why no coordinates are printed.

  • Which blocks outside Apothic Enchanting carry a ceiling of their own. The shelf data itself is fully read for this pack: 26 entries from Apothic Enchanting, 2 from Occultism, none from any other jar and none from All the Mods 10. What is open is the other route in, which is code rather than data - the Brass Bookshelf is one, found only by reading another mod's class, and any mod or datapack can add more. So the ceilings on this page are the ones we found, not a closed set, which is why the page routes on the mechanism instead of on a list.

  • Nothing above was tested in game. It is read from the mods' source, their shipped data and the pack's own files.
