What is Pipe Goggles?

Pipe Goggles is part of this pack's mod list, and the pack ships version 2.0.4 (file pipegoggles-2.0.4.jar). It was already included in this pack version or an earlier one.[1]

Unverified I can't confirm from the available pack data what Pipe Goggles does, who it is aimed at, or how it recipes or configs work in this pack, so I'm not guessing. The pack data also shows no quests involving this mod and no place for it on the ATM Star path, so there is no confirmed progression point for it yet.

How do you get started with Pipe Goggles?

4 parts

Getting started with this mod is easy, because there is only one item to make: Pipe Goggles. They let you see nearby pipes through walls, which helps once your machine setups get tangled up.[2][3]

Step 1: craft the goggles

The goggles use a shaped crafting recipe added by the mod, and it accepts tag-based materials, so you have some flexibility in what you put in. Here is the exact in-pack recipe:[2]

Step 2: set them up

  1. Right-click with the goggles in hand to open the configuration screen.[3]
  2. Insert items from the mod whose pipes or cables you want to see. The in-game help text says this is how you choose what shows up through the goggles.[3]
  3. Set the range of the goggles. The mod lets the pack define the available range options, with a minimum and a maximum.[3]
  4. Shift right-click to toggle the goggles on or off.[3]

Step 3: keep them powered

The mod's help text says to keep the goggles powered with FE to maintain their functionality. The mod also has a rule that decides whether the goggles need energy at all, plus rules for how much they store, how fast they charge, and how much energy each active color and each point of range uses.[3]

Tip: A bigger range or more active colors costs more energy when energy is required. If your goggles keep shutting off, try a smaller range first.[3]

Client options worth knowing

The mod also has client-side options. You can make auto mode work only while you are crouching, choose whether the scan is radial or rectangular, change how often the scan refreshes (in ticks), and turn the help tooltips in the GUI on or off.[3]

Unverified The sources do not show whether this pack changes the energy rules, so the exact energy capacity, charge rate and per-range costs are unconfirmed. No quests in this pack involve Pipe Goggles.

How does Pipe Goggles work?

4 parts

Pipe Goggles let you see nearby pipes through walls. The mod is a small utility rather than a machine or multiblock, so its core mechanics are three things: what you tell the goggles to look for, how far they look, and the energy they need to keep working.[3]

Using the goggles

Right-click to open the configuration screen. Shift right-click toggles the goggles on and off. The screen has three jobs: insert items from the mod whose pipes you want to see, keep the goggles powered with FE, and set the range.[3]

  • Insert items from the mod you want to see through the goggles. This is how you choose which pipes show up.[3]
  • Keep the goggles powered with FE so they keep working.[3]
  • Set the range of the goggles using the options listed below.[3]

The help tooltips in this GUI are controlled by client.showHelpTooltips, which is on in the pack.[3][4]

Range

The pack sets rules.rangeOptions to 4, 6, 8, 12 and 16. The first value is the minimum range and the last is the maximum, so you can pick anything from 4 up to 16 in those steps.[5]

Power

In the pack, rules.requireEnergy is true, so the goggles need energy to operate. If a pack turned it off, they would not consume any energy.[3][5]

Range and active colors both add to the energy cost, so a longer range or more active colors will cost more to run.[3][5]

Scanning behavior

The goggles periodically scan for nearby cables. client.scanRefreshRate is the delay between scans in ticks. The pack uses 10, the same as the mod default, and it can be set anywhere from 1 to 1,200 ticks (20 ticks is 1 second).[3][4]

client.scanRadially is true in the pack, so the scan runs radially around you. If it were false, the scan would be rectangular instead.[3][4]

client.autoModeRequiresCrouching is also true. That means the goggles' auto mode only works while you are crouching.[3][4]

Tip: All four client options are per-player settings. The energy and range rules are in the common config, so they apply to everyone using the goggles in the pack.[4][5]

Unverified The sources do not explain how often energy is drained (per tick or per scan), what exactly auto mode does, or which mods' pipes the goggles can detect. Check in game before relying on any of these.

How do you progress through Pipe Goggles?

There isn't much of a climb here. The recipe dump for this pack lists a single recipe that produces Pipe Goggles, and no other Pipe Goggles items show up in it. So there are no tiers to work through.[2]

Crafting Shaped

Crafting Shaped
any glass panesEmpty slotany glass panes
any redstone dustEmpty slotany redstone dust
any iron ingotany iron ingotany iron ingot

Recipe id: pipegoggles:pipegoggles

This is the only recipe in the pack's dump that makes Pipe Goggles, and it is a shaped crafting recipe.

The recipe takes its ingredients from item tags rather than fixed items, so anything that belongs to the matching tag works. You don't need one specific mod's version of those materials.[2]

Which Pipe Goggles config options matter?

3 parts

Good news: Pipe Goggles is easy to configure, and you only have two files to look at. Where the pack's files list a mod default, this pack's value matches it, so nothing below was changed from the mod's own numbers.[4][5]

Energy rules (common config)

rules.requireEnergy is set to true, so in this pack the goggles need energy to work. If it were false, they would not consume any energy.[5]

Range options

rules.rangeOptions is [4,6,8,12,16]. The first value is the minimum range and the last is the maximum, so you can pick anywhere from 4 up to 16 in this pack. The pack's file does not list a mod default for this option, so I can't say whether it was changed.[5]

Client settings

Tip: If auto mode seems to do nothing, check that you are crouching. This pack requires it for auto mode to work.[4]
