What is Metal Barrels?
2 parts
Metal Barrels is a storage mod that gives you bigger versions of the vanilla barrel. If you're tired of chest walls or want a compact way to hold lots of items, this is for you. This pack includes version 7 of the mod.[1][2]
The barrels work like their vanilla counterparts: you can open them even with a solid block on top. Unlike chests, they don't cause FPS issues in large numbers, so you can build big storage rooms without your game slowing down.[1]
Barrel tiers
- Copper stores 45 stacks.[1]
- Iron stores 54 stacks.[1]
- Silver stores 72 stacks.[1]
- Gold stores 81 stacks.[1]
- Diamond stores 108 stacks.[1]
- Crystal also stores 108 stacks and is transparent, so you can see what's inside.[1]
- Obsidian stores 108 stacks and has the blast resistance of obsidian, which makes it resistant to most explosions.[1]
- Netherite stores 135 stacks and has the fire and blast resistance of netherite.[1]
Upgrading barrels
The mod has upgrade items that let you upgrade a barrel that's already placed, without breaking it. The contents are not destroyed or dropped when you use one.[1]
Unverified Where Metal Barrels fits in this pack's progression, and whether the pack changes any of the mod's recipes or values, isn't confirmed by the available sources. Check the recipe viewer in game before you plan around a specific tier. This site does hold FTB StoneBlock 4's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.
How do you get started with Metal Barrels?
4 parts
Metal Barrels gives you bigger versions of the vanilla barrel. They open the same way, with a solid block on top, and the mod page says they don't cause FPS issues in large numbers the way chests can. Here's the order I'd go in.[1]
Make your first metal barrel
Your entry point is a plain wooden barrel. The pack gives you two ways to turn one into a metal barrel. The first gives you a Copper Barrel, which holds 45 stacks.[1][3]

The second skips copper and gives you an Iron Barrel straight away, which holds 54 stacks.[1][3]

Step up through the tiers
If you started with copper, you can move up to iron by crafting with the Copper Barrel itself.[3]

From an Iron Barrel you can branch to two tiers. Silver Barrel holds 72 stacks and Gold Barrel holds 81.[1][3]

Aim for diamond
The Diamond Barrel holds 108 stacks, and you can reach it from either the Gold Barrel or the Silver Barrel.[1][3]

From the Diamond Barrel you get two specialty versions. The Crystal Barrel is transparent and still holds 108 stacks. The Obsidian Barrel also holds 108 stacks and has the blast resistance of obsidian.[1][3]

The top tier is the Netherite Barrel, at 135 stacks, with the fire and blast resistance of netherite. In the pack you reach it with an upgrade item such as Diamond To Netherite used on a Diamond Barrel.[1][3]

Upgrading barrels you've already placed
You don't have to break a full barrel to upgrade it. The mod has upgrade items, and the mod page says the contents are not destroyed or dropped when you use one. Items like Copper To Iron are named after the two tiers they connect.[1][3]
There is also a crafting version of each upgrade. It combines the upgrade item with a barrel of the matching starting tier to give you the next barrel.[3]

How does Metal Barrels work?
3 parts
Metal Barrels is a simple storage mod, so there are no power, fluid or multiblock systems to learn. It adds tiers of barrels that hold more than vanilla ones. They work like vanilla barrels: you can open them with a solid block on top. The mod page also says they don't cause FPS issues in large numbers, unlike chests.[1]
Storage capacity by tier
Here is what the mod's project page lists for each tier, measured in stacks.[1]
- Copper Barrel: 45 stacks.[1][3]
- Iron Barrel: 54 stacks.[1][3]
- Silver Barrel: 72 stacks.[1][3]
- Gold Barrel: 81 stacks.[1][3]
- Diamond Barrel: 108 stacks.[1][3]
- Crystal Barrel: 108 stacks, and it is transparent.[1][3]
- Obsidian Barrel: 108 stacks, with a blast resistance equivalent to obsidian, so it resists most explosions.[1][3]
Upgrading barrels
You don't have to break and replace a barrel to move up a tier. The mod has upgrade items that work on barrels you've already placed, and the contents are neither destroyed nor dropped when you use one.[1]
The upgrade items are named for the tier they start from and the tier they reach, such as Wood To Copper, Copper To Iron and Gold To Diamond. The pack also has crafting recipes that combine upgrades into longer jumps, like Wood To Diamond. Two of them are shown below.[3]

Crafting barrels directly
You can also craft a higher-tier barrel directly from a lower one. The pack has recipes for these steps, including from a wooden barrel straight to iron, copper or gold, and from diamond to crystal or obsidian.[3]

How do you progress through Metal Barrels?
3 parts
Metal Barrels works as a ladder of tiers. The tiers in the recipes are wood, Copper Barrel, Iron Barrel, Silver Barrel, Gold Barrel, Diamond Barrel, Crystal Barrel, Obsidian Barrel and Netherite Barrel. In this pack you climb it with direct barrel recipes or with upgrade items.[3]
Direct barrel-to-barrel steps
These are the single-step recipes that turn one barrel into the next tier. Each one has its own crafting recipe in the pack.[3]
- A Copper Barrel upgrades to an Iron Barrel.[3]
- An Iron Barrel upgrades to either a Silver Barrel or a Gold Barrel.[3]
- A Silver Barrel upgrades to a Gold Barrel or a Diamond Barrel. A Gold Barrel upgrades to a Diamond Barrel.[3]
- A Diamond Barrel is the branching point: it upgrades to a Crystal Barrel or to an Obsidian Barrel.[3]

A wooden barrel can also skip ahead to a Gold Barrel.
The Netherite step
The top of the ladder is the Netherite Barrel. The recipe that makes it from an Obsidian Barrel is a smithing recipe, and it is marked as changed by the pack. The sources here do not show the mod's default, so use the recipe below as the truth for this pack.[3]

Upgrade items
The other route uses upgrade items named after the jump they perform, such as Wood To Copper or Iron To Silver. The recipe below is an example of a combine step, using Iron To Diamond.[3]

The Wood To Copper upgrade item is one of the directly craftable ones.
The longer jumps, such as Wood To Diamond, Wood To Obsidian and the various upgrades to Netherite, exist as items and have combine recipes that turn the matching barrel into the target tier. Several of the long wood upgrades can also be built by combining shorter upgrades in a chain. For example, Wood To Iron, Iron To Gold and Gold To Diamond together make Wood To Diamond.[3]
Crafting Shapeless

One of several ways to chain short upgrades into a long one.
Unverified The sources here show no quests involving Metal Barrels, so the pack's quest book gives no guided order for this mod. The order above comes from the recipes alone.
