What is Utilitarian?
2 parts
Same as in the FTB Skies 2: Aero 1.10.0 guide
Utilitarian is a utility mod, and this pack ships version 1.21.1-0.19.2 of it. In this pack, the quest book points you to two of its blocks, and both are handy for a sky start.[1][2]
What you get
- Angel Block: you can place it in any empty space without it needing to connect to the ground, which makes it the way to start a brand new sky island. You pass right through it, so it won't save you from a fall.[2]
- Snad, Red Snad and Soul Snad: Snad blocks let you build farms of cactus or sugarcane easily. Give them a redstone signal to increase the growth rate of the crop.[2]
Where it sits in the quest book
Utilitarian shows up in the chapter "Useful Items & Tips", which is chapter 2 of 31 in the book and has 30 quests. The chapter's own intro quest, "Tips & Tricks!" quest, describes it as a collection of useful items and tips for your playthrough.[2]
Two quests in that chapter are about this mod: "Placing Blocks In The Air" quest, which asks for the Angel Block, and "SNAD" quest, which accepts any of the three Snad blocks.[2]
How do you get started with Utilitarian?
4 parts
Same as in the FTB Skies 2: Aero 1.10.0 guide
Utilitarian is a pile of small, handy blocks, and in this pack you meet it in the quest book in two places. The Useful Items & Tips chapter (chapter 2 of 31) covers the Angel Block and Snad. The Redstone Clock turns up in the Integrated Dynamics chapter. Here is the order I'd make things in.[2][3]
Step one: the Angel Block
Start with the Angel Block. If you want to start a brand new sky island, this is the answer: you can place it in any empty space without it connecting to the ground. You pass right through it, so don't expect it to catch you if you fall. The quest for it is "Placing Blocks In The Air" quest. The pack changed this recipe from the mod's own.[2][4]

Step two: Snad
Next, make Snad for easy Cactus and Sugarcane farms. Give it a redstone signal and the crop grows faster. The "SNAD" quest quest covers it. The Air Dash quest also mentions that Snad pulsed directly with redstone makes sugarcane grow quite fast, which helps if you want a steady supply of paper.[2]
There are also Red Snad and Soul Snad. The quest accepts any of the three.[2][4]
Step three: the Redstone Clock
The Redstone Clock is a block that pulses on its own. Right click it with an empty hand to change the pulse frequency, and sneak to increase it faster. The pack changed its recipe too. The Integrated Dynamics quest "Early Menril Automation" quest (Tech Mods group, chapter 25 of 31) uses it to automatically reset the Squeezer. That quest comes after Extracting Menril and Drying Basin.[3][4][5]

Step four: keep traders out of your face
If traders keep spawning right next to you, a Black Trader Carpet helps: arriving traders end up on this block instead of in your face. The carpets come in many colours, and this is the black one. You can also craft a trapped version of a carpet, but be warned that it kills the trader.[4][5]

The quest book also has "No More Traders!" quest, but its task is a different item, the 'No Solicitors!' sign, not one of Utilitarian's carpets.[2]

How do you progress through Utilitarian?
2 parts
Same as in the FTB Skies 2: Aero 1.10.0 guide
Utilitarian is a grab bag of small helpers, so there is no tier ladder to climb here. In this pack the quest book brings the mod in a few places, and the pack has changed several of its recipes.[2][3][4]
Where the quest book uses it
- "SNAD" quest sits in the Useful Items & Tips chapter (chapter 2 of 31). It accepts Snad, Red Snad or Soul Snad. Snad blocks make cactus or sugarcane farms easy, and a redstone signal speeds up crop growth.[2]
- "Placing Blocks In The Air" quest is in the same chapter and asks for the Angel Block. It can be placed in any empty space without connecting to the ground, which makes it your starting point for a brand new sky island. You pass right through it, so it won't catch a fall.[2]
- "Early Menril Automation" quest is in the Integrated Dynamics chapter (group Tech Mods, chapter 25 of 31). It comes after Extracting Menril and Drying Basin, and its tasks include the Redstone Clock. The quest uses a clock to reset the Squeezer automatically, and it says a vanilla or modded clock will do.[3]
- The Air Dash quest, which comes after Proper Materials, mentions Snad as a way to automate sugarcane for Burning Dash Scrolls. Pulsing Snad directly with redstone makes sugarcane grow quite fast.[2]
Recipes the pack changed
The recipe dump marks these Utilitarian recipes as changed by the pack: Angel Block (both of its recipes), Redstone Clock, Lapis Lamp, Block Magnet, Fluid Hopper, Well Behaved Dropper and Trowel. The recipe blocks below show the in-pack versions.[4]

Which FTB Skies 2: Aero quests use Utilitarian?
2 parts
Same as in the FTB Skies 2: Aero 1.10.0 guide
Utilitarian shows up in two quest chapters in this pack: "Useful Items & Tips", which is chapter 2 of 31 in the book, and "Integrated Dynamics", which sits in the "Tech Mods" group as chapter 25 of 31.[2][3]
Useful Items & Tips
This chapter has two quests that ask you for Utilitarian items. The chapter's own intro quest says you'll find plenty of useful items and tips you can use in your playthrough.[2]
- "SNAD" quest: you hand in any one of Snad, Red Snad or Soul Snad. The quest says Snad blocks let you build Cactus or Sugarcane farms easily, and that a redstone signal on them increases the crop growth rate.[2]
- "Placing Blocks In The Air" quest: you need the Angel Block. It is the answer if you want to start a brand new sky island, because you can place it in any empty space without it connecting to the ground. You pass right through it, so it will not save you from a fall.[2]
Snad also comes up in "Air Dash" quest, which is about Burning Dash Scrolls for exploring the void. It has no Utilitarian task, but it suggests automating the sugarcane you need for paper, and says Snad pulsed directly with redstone makes sugarcane grow quite fast.[2]
Integrated Dynamics
Here the mod appears in one quest: "Early Menril Automation" quest. Its tasks are an armor stand and the Redstone Clock. The quest comes after "Extracting Menril" quest and "Drying Basin" quest, which both follow the chapter's opening quest, "Welcome to Integrated Dynamics!" quest.[3]
The quest is about automating the Squeezer before you have power. You set up 2 armor stands above it so they fall onto it and do the jumping for you. A redstone clock then resets the Squeezer, and the quest says either a vanilla or a modded clock will do.[3]
