What is Fast Item Frames?

2 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Fast Item Frames redesigns vanilla item frames so they are lightweight blocks instead of entities. That makes them perform significantly better, especially in builds with large numbers of frames. If you like showing off your storage, your trophies or your machines on a wall, this mod is for you.[1]

The pack includes version 21.1.6 of the mod, built for NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21.1.[2]

What you get

  • Less lag and better FPS: rendering and updates are faster, and you will notice it most in areas with many frames.[1]
  • Better interactions: frames have proper breaking particles and work with commands like /setblock. They also react immediately when the block they sit on is broken or moved by pistons.[1]
  • Multiple frames per block: several item frames can still share the same block space.[1]
  • Dyeing: you dye frames just like leather armor, which unlocks 5,713,438 unique colors.[1]
  • Invisible frames: Shift + right-click with an empty hand to hide the frame itself. The item is then shown larger than usual.[1]
  • Waxed frames: use honeycomb to lock a frame so it can't be rotated, modified or have its visibility changed by accident.[1]
  • Optional name tag hiding: stops custom item names from showing while you look at displayed items.[1]
  • Optional world conversion: existing vanilla item frame entities can be converted into item frame blocks when chunks load.[1]

Setup notes

The mod has to be installed on both the client and the server. On NeoForge it also requires Puzzles Lib.[1]

How do you get started with Fast Item Frames?

3 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Fast Item Frames replaces vanilla item frames with lightweight blocks instead of entities. The mod's project page says this gives you less lag and better FPS, especially in builds with lots of frames. Frames also react instantly when their supporting block is broken or moved by pistons, and several frames can still share one block space.[1]

Watch out: The mod has to be installed on both the client and the server. If you run a server for your friends, everyone needs it.[1]

How to get your first frame

Unverified I can't confirm how to obtain this mod's item frames in this pack. No in-pack recipe, quest or in-game description for the mod was available, so there is no recipe block here. Check the item search in-game (JEI or EMI, if the pack has one) for the mod's items before you plan around them. This site does hold FTB Skies 2: Aero's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

What to try once you have a frame

These features come from the mod's project page. I haven't been able to confirm whether this pack changes any of them, so treat them as the mod's own behavior.[1]

  1. Place the frame and put an item in it. It works like a vanilla frame, but as a block it handles breaking particles and commands like /setblock properly.[1]
  2. Dye it. Frames can be dyed like leather armor, which unlocks 5,713,438 unique colors, so you can match them to your base's palette.[1]
  3. Make it invisible. Shift + right-click with an empty hand hides the frame itself and shows the item larger than usual. That's handy for clean displays in storage rooms.[1]
  4. Wax it. Use honeycomb on the frame to lock it. A waxed frame can't be accidentally rotated, modified or have its visibility changed.[1]

Optional settings worth knowing about

The mod has an optional setting to hide custom item names while you look at displayed items. It also has an option to convert existing vanilla item frame entities into frame blocks when chunks load. That's useful if you already have a base full of vanilla frames. Both are described on the project page, but I haven't confirmed their config key names or this pack's default values.[1]

Config files live in the config folder and are named after the mod id with a client, common or server suffix. Not every type necessarily exists for a given mod.[1]

How does Fast Item Frames work?

4 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Fast Item Frames redesigns item frames, so its core mechanics are about how frames behave, how you customize them, and what that means for your builds.[1]

Frames are blocks, not entities

The big change is that item frames are implemented as blocks instead of entities. That is where the performance gain comes from: rendering and updates are faster, and you get FPS boosts in areas with many frames.[1]

Being blocks also changes how frames interact with the world. They show proper breaking particles and work with commands like /setblock. They react instantly when the block supporting them is broken or moved by a piston. Multiple frames can still occupy the same block space.[1]

Customizing a frame

  • Dyeing: you dye frames just like leather armor, which unlocks 5,713,438 unique colors.[1]
  • Invisible frames: Shift + right-click a frame with an empty hand to hide the frame itself. The item is then displayed larger than usual.[1]
  • Waxing: use honeycomb on a frame to lock it. A waxed frame can't be accidentally rotated, modified, or have its visibility changed.[1]

The mod also lets you fine tune the appearance of invisible frames so they fit your builds and resource packs.[1]

Optional behaviors

The mod describes a pair of optional features. One hides custom item names, so name tags don't show up while you look at displayed items. The other converts existing vanilla item frame entities into item frame blocks when chunks load.[1]

Unverified Whether name tag hiding and world conversion are enabled in this pack is not shown in the sources here. The pack has no config files for this mod in the sources, so default values and any pack changes can't be checked.

Installation notes

The mod must be installed on both the client and the server. It requires Puzzles Lib on Fabric and NeoForge. On Fabric it also needs Fabric API and Forge Config API Port.[1]

What changed in Fast Item Frames between versions?

1 part

FTB Skies 2: Aero 1.10.0 ships Fast Item Frames 21.1.6, and the pack has included the mod since 1.0.3 or earlier. Below is what changed across the mod's own releases, newest first.[3]

Mod releases

  • 21.1.6 (2025-09-04): fixed invisible item frame entities turning into non-invisible item frame blocks when converted. This is the version in the pack.[3][4]
  • 21.1.5 (2025-09-04): shape updates are now suppressed when item frame entities are converted to blocks.[4]
  • 21.1.4 (2025-06-19): fixed maps in item frames not loading for other players in multiplayer.[4]
  • 21.1.3 (2025-04-24): fixed level loading hanging when item frame entities in unloaded chunks tried to convert to blocks.[4]
  • 21.1.2 (2025-03-29): modded item frames are no longer affected, so they keep their potentially unique abilities. Also fixed a missing cauldron interaction for undying item frames.[4]
  • 21.1.1 (2025-03-06): fixed the server thread hanging when loading new chunks containing structures with vanilla item frame entities.[4]
  • 21.1.0 (2025-02-28): initial release.[4]
Tip: If you play multiplayer, the 21.1.4 map fix and the 21.1.1 and 21.1.3 fixes for hangs while loading chunks and levels are the ones you would have noticed most. The pack's version includes all of them.[3][4]
