What is Create: Train Track Rail Grinding?

2 parts

Create: Train Track Rail Grinding lets you hop onto Create train tracks and grind along the rails, like in the Sonic the Hedgehog games and early-2000s extreme sports games. This pack ships version 1.2.2 of the mod.[1][2]

How you start grinding

Diving boots give you the ability to grind on rails. If you would rather wear something else, the Rail Rider enchantment lets any boots rail-grind. The controls can be tweaked in the mod's config.[1]

What it does while you ride

  • Riding is momentum based, so you keep your speed even while using Elytra or mobility tools from other mods.[1]
  • Grinding carries on when you cross dimensions, including modded portals that Create supports.[1]
  • It supports Steam n' Rails and Sable, so you can grind on tracks even on Aeronautics ships. The mod is also listed as compatible with Aeronautics contraptions and modded train tracks.[1]
  • A Bar of Chocolate is no longer a throwaway snack: it gives you extra speed and balance while you grind.[1]

The mod has been in the pack since version 1.0.3 or earlier, so it is part of the pack's Create setup rather than a recent addition.[2]

How do you get started with Create: Train Track Rail Grinding?

3 parts

This mod lets you ride the rails of Create Train Tracks like a speedster. The first steps are about getting the right boots and learning three controls. It all takes place on Train Tracks, so you'll need some of those laid down.[1][3]

Your first steps

  1. Get something that lets you grind. Diving Boots work as grind shoes. If you'd rather use other boots, the Rail Rider enchantment lets any boots rail grind.[1][3]
  2. Find some Train Tracks. Right-click them with an empty hand to start grinding, and right-click them again with an empty hand to stop.[3]
  3. Try the automatic option too. Holding the Catch Rail key near Train Tracks makes you latch on to nearby rails by yourself.[3]
  4. Hold the Crouch (Accelerate on Rail) key to speed up. Hold the Jump Off Rail key to leap off the rail. You can rebind all of these in the Rail Grinding category of your controls.[1][3]

Catching a rail negates fall damage and keeps your momentum. There is even an advancement for saving yourself from a lethal fall by catching onto rails.[3]

Speed in this pack

Without accelerating, you cruise at the speed set by cruiseGrindSpeed, which is 0.75 here. While you accelerate with crouch, your top speed is set by topGrindSpeed, also 0.75. Both match the mod defaults, and so does crouchAcceleration at 1.[4]

Your leap off a rail depends on how long you charge your jump (railJumpCharge) and on your speed (railJumpMomentum). Both are set to 0.5. Going down inclines also speeds you up, scaled by downwardMomentumGain, which is 0.5.[4]

Tip: If you jump off a rail grind with any Elytra equipped, flight starts automatically, because autoDeployElytra is true in this pack. Grinding momentum carries over into the glide.[1][4]

A tasty boost

Eating Chocolate gives you the Sonic Wind effect. It boosts speed, acceleration and jump strength while you rail grind, and there is an advancement for it.[3]

Unverified How to obtain Diving Boots or the Rail Rider enchantment in this pack is not confirmed by the sources used for this guide, so check in-game (for example in the recipe viewer) before planning around them. This site does hold FTB Skies 2: Aero's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

How does Create: Train Track Rail Grinding work?

7 parts

This mod has no machines or multiblocks to build. Everything comes down to your boots, Train Tracks and a handful of controls, so this section covers how a grind works from start to finish.[1][3]

What lets you grind

Diving Boots can be used for Rail Grinding. Any other boots work too if they carry the Rail Rider enchantment, which is what allows you to grind on Train Tracks.[1][3]

Starting, steering and stopping

  1. Right-click Train Tracks with an empty hand to start grinding.[3]
  2. Hold the Catch Rail key while you are near Train Tracks to latch on automatically. Catching a rail negates fall damage and keeps your momentum.[3]
  3. Hold the crouch key (listed in the controls as Crouch (Accelerate on Rail)) to speed up.[3]
  4. Hold the Jump Off Rail key to leap off the rail.[3]
  5. Right-click Train Tracks again with an empty hand to stop grinding.[3]

You can rebind all three keys, and they appear under the Rail Grinding category in the controls menu.[3]

Tip: The Catch Rail key is a lifesaver. Catching onto a rail negates fall damage, and the mod has an advancement for surviving a lethal fall this way.[3]

Speed and jump tuning in this pack

The server config file sets how grinding feels. This pack leaves every value at the mod default, so you get the stock behaviour.[4]

  • cruiseGrindSpeed is your cruising speed when you are not accelerating. It is 0.75, and the allowed range is 0.1 to 2.0.[4]
  • topGrindSpeed is the top speed while accelerating with crouch. It is 0.75, and the allowed range is 0.1 to 1.0.[4]
  • crouchAcceleration is a multiplier on base acceleration while crouch is held. It is 1, and the allowed range is 0.1 to 2.0.[4]
  • downwardMomentumGain is the acceleration multiplier when going down inclines. It is 0.5, and the allowed range is 0.1 to 2.0.[4]
  • railJumpCharge controls how far you leap based on how long you charge your jump, scaling both the horizontal and vertical bonus. It is 0.5, and the allowed range is 0.1 to 1.0.[4]
  • railJumpMomentum controls how far you leap based on your speed, scaling both the horizontal and vertical launch. It is 0.5, and the allowed range is 0.1 to 1.0.[4]

Momentum and Elytra

Grinding is momentum based. You keep your speed when you use an Elytra or mobility tools from other mods, and the grind carries on even when you cross dimensions, including through modded portals that Create supports.[1]

In this pack autoDeployElytra is true. If you jump off a rail grind with any Elytra equipped, flight engages automatically.[4]

Sonic Wind from chocolate

Eating Chocolate gives you the Sonic Wind effect. While you are rail grinding it boosts your speed, acceleration and jump strength. The mod has an advancement for boosting your grind this way.[3]

Track and ship compatibility

The mod supports Steam 'n' Rails and modded Train Tracks. It also supports Sable, so you can grind on tracks on Aeronautics ships and contraptions.[1]

The pack's starter boots

The first time you log in, the pack's script gives you a pair of dyed leather boots called Skybound Kicks. They carry Rail Rider at level 1 and Unbreaking at level 10. If your feet slot is empty they are equipped for you, and otherwise they go into your inventory. The script flags the player after the first login, so you get them only once.[5]

Watch out: Leave syncDebugToClients on false. It is off in this pack, and the config says not to enable it unless you are debug testing, since it broadcasts Rail Grind debug values.[4]

Which Create: Train Track Rail Grinding config options matter?

2 parts

Rail Grinding has two config files: a server one that controls how grinding feels, and a client one for your own sound and camera settings. Good news: every option in this pack that lists a mod default is set to that default, so the pack doesn't change any of the values below.[4][6]

Server settings: speed and jumps

  • topGrindSpeed is the top speed while you accelerate with crouch. The pack uses 0.75, the mod default, and the allowed range is 0.1 to 1.0.[4]
  • cruiseGrindSpeed is your cruising speed when you aren't accelerating with crouch. It is 0.75 here, the mod default, with a range of 0.1 to 2.0.[4]
  • crouchAcceleration is a multiplier on base acceleration while shift is held. The pack keeps the default of 1, with a range of 0.1 to 2.0.[4]
  • downwardMomentumGain is the acceleration multiplier when you go down inclines. It is 0.5, the mod default, with a range of 0.1 to 2.0.[4]
  • railJumpCharge sets how far you leap based on how long you charge your jump, scaling both the horizontal and vertical charge bonus. The pack uses 0.5, the default, with a range of 0.1 to 1.0.[4]
  • railJumpMomentum sets how far you leap based on your speed, scaling both the horizontal and vertical speed-based launch. It is 0.5, the default, with a range of 0.1 to 1.0.[4]
  • autoDeployElytra is set to true in this pack. When you jump off a Rail Grind with any Elytra equipped, flight engages automatically.[4]

Client settings: sound and camera

  • soundVolume is the volume of all Rail Grinding sounds. It is 0.5, the mod default, and ranges from 0.0 to 1.0, so turn it down or up to taste.[6]
  • cameraRollOnLean controls camera roll while you grind. It is false in this pack, and the config warns it may cause motion sickness if you turn it on.[6]
Watch out: Leave debugMode and syncDebugToClients on false. Both are marked as only for debug testing: debug mode displays many values while you grind, and the sync option broadcasts those debug values to players using debug mode.[4][6]

What changed in Create: Train Track Rail Grinding between versions?

1 part

FTB Skies 2: Aero 1.10.0 ships Create: Train Track Rail Grinding 1.2.2. The mod has been in the pack since version 1.0.3 or earlier, so you've had it for essentially the whole run of the pack.[2]

Mod releases

  • 1.2.2 (the version in this pack): added Russian and Ukrainian translations, added EMF support, added JEED support, and fixed a Minmap bug.[2][7]
  • 1.2.1: fixed a bug where the rail catch combination stopped other inputs from working, and fixed a bug involving extended length tracks.[8]

If you've had trouble with extended length tracks or with the rail catch combination in the past, those fixes landed in 1.2.1, and the pack's 1.2.2 includes them.[2][8]
