What is Compact Crafting?

Compact Crafting is part of the pack's mod list in this version. It has been there since FTB Skies 2: Aero 1.0.3 or earlier, so it is not a recent addition.[1]

The pack's mod list shows the version as 9.9.9, while the file name is compactcrafting-4.0.1.jar. The two don't match, so if you need to know exactly which build you have, check the jar in your mods folder.[1]

Unverified The sources I have for this pack don't describe what Compact Crafting does or how its mechanics work, so I'm not going to guess here. Check back once more details are added to this guide.

How do you get started with Compact Crafting?

4 parts

Compact Crafting is about miniaturization crafting: you set up a field, and items thrown into it start a craft. Everything starts with a few small parts, and the Base and the dish are crafted from vanilla materials. Here is the order I'd make them in.[2][3]

First, the Base

The Base is the building block for the rest of the mod's machines. One craft gives you four of them, so you won't need to repeat it often.[2]

Next, the Miniaturization Projector Dish

Next comes the Miniaturization Projector Dish. The pack has changed this recipe, so go by the recipe shown below and not by what you may remember from other packs. One craft gives you four dishes.[2]

Then, the Field Projector

Combine one Base and one dish and you get the Field Projector. This is the block that creates the miniaturization field.[2][3]

To craft with the field, throw the catalyst item into it. That is what starts the craft, as the Miniaturization Crafting recipe screen explains.[3]

Finally, proxies for automation

Once the projector works, you can add proxies. They are made from a Base plus one extra item, and they are meant for field automation with redstone.[2][3]

  • Shift-use a proxy on a projector to bind it to a field.[3]
  • Shift-use in the air to unbind it again.[3]
  • Right-click a placed proxy to highlight the projectors it is linked to.[3]
Tip: If a projector breaks in the middle of a craft, the pack's setting for field.destabilizeHandling is RESTORE_ALL, so you shouldn't have to worry about losing the items in the field. The other allowed values are DESTROY_ALL, DESTROY_CATALYST, DESTROY_BLOCKS, RESTORE_CATALYST and RESTORE_BLOCKS.[4]

How does Compact Crafting work?

5 parts

Compact Crafting revolves around a miniaturization field. The recipe viewer lists these recipes under the title Miniaturization Crafting, and the mod's projectors and proxies are the pieces you use to set up and automate a field.[3]

Starting a craft

In the recipe viewer, a miniaturization recipe shows a catalyst and material components. The catalyst is the item you throw into the miniaturization field to start the craft. The material components are placed in the world.[3]

Building the projector

The Field Projector is made from a Base and a Miniaturization Projector Dish. The pack changed the dish recipe, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's defaults. The recipes below are the exact in-pack versions.[2]

Field proxies and redstone automation

Proxies are the mod's way of automating a field with redstone. There are two kinds: the Field Proxy (Match) and the Field Proxy (Rescan). Both are made from a Base plus one extra item.[2][3]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: compactcrafting:match_proxy

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: compactcrafting:rescan_proxy

A proxy gets bound to a field. The tooltips give you the whole workflow:[3]

  1. Shift-use the proxy on a projector to bind it to a field. Its tooltip then shows the position of the field it is bound to.[3]
  2. Right-click a placed proxy to highlight projectors, which is handy for checking your setup.[3]
  3. Shift-use the proxy in the air to unbind it from the field.[3]

When a field is destabilized

A field can be destabilized mid-craft, for example when a projector breaks. The server option field.destabilizeHandling decides how the field handles that. This pack sets it to RESTORE_ALL. The other allowed values are DESTROY_ALL, DESTROY_CATALYST, DESTROY_BLOCKS, RESTORE_CATALYST and RESTORE_BLOCKS.[4]

Debug logging

The server config also has logging switches, all off in this pack. logging.fieldBlockChanges adds logging for fields handling nearby block updates. logging.recipeMatching adds logging for the recipe matching process. logging.recipeRegistration adds logging during recipe registration and syncing. They are only useful when you are tracking down a problem.[4]

How do you progress through Compact Crafting?

5 parts

The recipes for this mod form a short crafting chain. You make the Base and the Miniaturization Projector Dish first, then build everything else from them.[2]

Crafting order

  1. Craft the Base. A craft makes 4× Base, so a single batch covers several of the later items.[2]
  2. Craft the Miniaturization Projector Dish. The pack changed this recipe, so don't rely on the mod's default. A craft makes 4× dishes.[2]
  3. Combine a Base and a dish into the Field Projector.[2]
  4. Make the Field Proxy (Match) and the Field Proxy (Rescan), each of which uses a Base.[2]

Tip: Because the Base recipe makes 4 at a time, a single craft already gives you enough Base for the Field Projector and both proxies.[2]

Which Compact Crafting config options matter?

3 parts

Compact Crafting has two config files, one for the server and one for your client. Most of what you'll want to touch is in the client file, but one server option decides what happens to your craft when something goes wrong.[4][5]

Server: what happens when a craft is disrupted

field.destabilizeHandling controls how the field reacts to a destabilization event, such as a projector breaking mid-craft. This pack sets it to RESTORE_ALL. The other allowed values are DESTROY_ALL, DESTROY_CATALYST, DESTROY_BLOCKS, RESTORE_CATALYST and RESTORE_BLOCKS.[4]

The sources don't say what the mod's own default is, so I can't tell you whether the pack changed this one. Check this option first if you want a failed craft to be harsher or more forgiving.[4]

Server: logging options

There are three logging switches, and the pack leaves all of them off (false). They only add extra log output, so you can ignore them unless you're debugging a problem.[4]

Client: how projectors look and behave

  • projectors.placementTime is how long, in ticks, the placement helper shows after you right-click a projector. The pack uses 160, which is the same as the mod default. The allowed range is 60 to 240.[5]
  • projectors.projectorColor is the color of active projector fields, in HEX format. The pack sets it to #FF6A00 (orange). The config file lists violet (#32174D), green (#00A658) and blue (#3A7FE1) as other examples.[5]
  • projectors.projectorOffColor is the color of projectors when they aren't active, also in HEX format. The pack sets it to #898989.[5]
  • projectors.projectorDebugger decides whether pressing F3 enables debug renderers. The pack has it set to false.[5]
Tip: If the placement helper vanishes too quickly while you're lining up a projector, raise projectors.placementTime. It accepts values from 60 to 240 ticks, and this pack sits at 160.[5]
