What is Aeronaut's Compass?

1 part

Aeronaut's Compass adds the Navigator's Table, which lets you give a compass a destination of your own. The pack includes version 1.1.0 of the mod.[1][2]

You put a compass on the Navigator's Table, type in coordinates and a name, and the compass then points there. If you craft the table with the compass alone, it resets the compass.[2]

The pack uses it for airship navigation. The Navigation Table takes a navigation item such as a Filled Map or a Compass and puts out a redstone signal toward the destination. The signal is strongest when the ship faces it dead on and weaker as you drift off. Feed that signal into a servo and the ship can find its own way. The Navigator's Table is how you make the destination for that setup.[2]

Where it sits in the quest book

The quest "Navigation Tables" quest is in the "Aeronautics" chapter, in the "Main Questline" group. That is chapter 5 of 31 in the book, and it has 58 quests. The quest asks you to obtain both the Navigation Table and the Navigator's Table.[2]

It comes after "Going Places" quest. That quest path covers docking, ropes, navigation, automated routes, claiming your ship so it keeps ticking while you're away, and taking it into other dimensions. "Docking Connector" quest also follows Going Places.[2]

The chapter opens with "Taking to the Skies" quest, and Going Places is one of the quest paths that branch off it. Many other quests in the chapter are not covered here, so check the quest book itself for the rest.[2]

How do you get started with Aeronaut's Compass?

3 parts

Aeronaut's Compass is a small mod with one job: it lets you decide where a compass points. The block it adds is the Navigator's Table, and in this pack it is the tool for setting a destination that your ship can then fly toward.[2][3]

In the quest book, you'll find it in the Aeronautics chapter of the Main Questline, in the quest "Navigation Tables" quest. That quest comes right after "Going Places" quest, the path about docking, ropes, navigation and automated routes. Before that, "Taking to the Skies" quest covers building a ship that actually flies, so get a ship in the air first and then come back for navigation.[2]

Step 1: craft the Navigator's Table

This is the only thing you need to craft from this mod. Here is the exact in-pack recipe:[4]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: mapcompass:navigator_table

Step 2: set a destination

  1. Put a compass on the Navigator's Table.[2]
  2. Type in the coordinates and a name for the place.[2]
  3. Take the compass back. It now points at those coordinates.[2]
Tip: Changed your mind? Craft the table on its own to reset it. The in-game tooltip says the same thing: "Craft alone to reset".[2][3]

Step 3: let the ship use it

The Navigator's Table only creates the destination. The Navigation Table, which the quest asks for alongside it, reads a Filled Map or a Compass and puts out a redstone signal toward that destination. The signal is strongest when the ship faces the target dead on and weaker as you drift off course.[2]

Feed that signal into a servo and the ship can find its own way. The "Servos" quest quest covers the Mechanical Servo, which turns a redstone signal into an angle.[2]

There is also an Advanced Navigation Table. It holds several maps at once and exposes its slots to automation, so a route can swap targets as it goes.[2]

The "Navigation Tables" quest quest is where the book walks you through all of this.[2]

How does Aeronaut's Compass work?

The sources for this mod are thin, so this section stays short. The one block I can confirm is the Navigator's Table, the mod's Navigator's Table.[3]

It's crafted with a shapeless recipe, so the ingredients can go anywhere in the crafting grid. The pack's recipe list marks it as the mod's own recipe, not one the pack changed.[4]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: mapcompass:navigator_table

Shapeless, so placement in the grid doesn't matter.

The mod's language file also contains a lore line that reads "Craft alone to reset". The sources here don't say which item it belongs to.[3]

How do you progress through Aeronaut's Compass?

3 parts

Good news: there's no tier ladder to climb here. The only item from Aeronaut's Compass that shows up in the pack's recipes and quests is the Navigator's Table, so this section is really about where it sits in the quest book and how you get it.[2][4]

Where it sits in the quest book

The Navigator's Table lives in the Aeronautics chapter, which is part of the Main Questline group and is chapter 5 of 31 in the book. That chapter starts with "Taking to the Skies" quest, and the paths branch off from there: the hull, lift, thrust, controls, stability and going places.[2]

You'll find the table in the "Going Places" quest path, which covers docking, ropes, navigation, automated routes, claiming your ship and taking it to other dimensions. The quest is "Navigation Tables" quest, and it comes after Going Places. It asks you to get two items: the Navigation Table from Simulated, and the Navigator's Table from this mod.[2]

Next in line is "Airship Station" quest, which comes after Navigation Tables. It's the quest where a ship learns a route by watching you fly it. Other quests in the same path include "Docking Connector" quest, "Ropes" quest and "Aero Portals" quest.[2]

Getting the Navigator's Table

The pack uses the mod's own crafting recipe, a shapeless one, so you can make it with no special machine. Here it is exactly as the pack has it:[4]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: mapcompass:navigator_table

What the quest says it does

The Navigator's Table is how you make the destination. Put a compass on it, type in coordinates and a name, and the compass points there. Crafting it on its own resets it.[2]

The Navigation Table then does the pointing. Give it a Filled Map or a Compass and it outputs a redstone signal toward the destination. The signal is strongest when the ship faces the target dead on and weaker as you drift off. Feed that into a servo and the ship finds its own way.[2]

Tip: The Advanced Navigation Table holds several maps at once and exposes its slots to automation, so a route can swap targets as it goes. That makes it a natural step before the Airship Station quest.[2]

Which FTB Skies 2: Aero quests use Aeronaut's Compass?

2 parts

Aeronaut's Compass shows up in one quest. It sits in the Aeronautics chapter, which is chapter 5 of 31 in the book, in the Main Questline group. The chapter has 58 quests and starts with "Taking to the Skies" quest.[2]

Navigation Tables

The quest is "Navigation Tables" quest. It comes after "Going Places" quest, the quest path about docking, ropes, navigation, automated routes, claiming your ship and taking it into other dimensions. Its siblings on that path are Docking Connector, Ropes, Ground Travel and Aero Portals.[2]

It asks you to hand in two items: the Navigation Table from Simulated and the Navigator's Table.[2]

The Navigation Table points at things. You give it a Filled Map or a Compass, and it puts out a redstone signal toward the destination. The signal is strongest when the ship faces the target dead on and weaker as you drift off. Feed that into a servo and the ship finds its own way.[2]

The Navigator's Table is the piece from this mod. It is how you make the destination: put a compass on it, type coordinates and a name, and the compass points there. The quest says to craft it alone to reset it.[2]

Tip: The quest also mentions an Advanced Navigation Table. It holds several maps at once and exposes the slots to automation, so a route can swap targets as it goes.[2]

What comes next

"Airship Station" quest comes right after Navigation Tables. It is the automated-routes quest: you put a Vehicle Transponder on the ship and an Airship Station at each end of the trip, and the ship learns the route by watching you fly it.[2]
