What is Accelerated Decay?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Accelerated Decay makes leaves vanish quickly after you chop down a tree. If you've ever waited around for leftover leaves to rot away, this mod is for you.[1]

It doesn't rapidly tick the leaf blocks. Instead it removes them as soon as possible, and it stays close to vanilla by waiting for the game to mark the leaves as ready for removal first.[1]

How it works

Once the last block supporting the leaves is gone, the mod looks for leaves with the #minecraft:leaves tag and removes them as long as they're ready to decay. It works with any tree built from blocks in the #minecraft:logs tag, which means modded trees should work too as long as they use those tags.[1]

The mod's main goal is less lag on clients and servers. It uses a time-based checking system and cuts down on particles and block ticking, so the performance impact stays very small.[1]

Who it's for and what to expect

  • It's for anyone who clears forests for wood and wants the canopy gone fast without a performance hit.[1]
  • There's no complicated setup. The mod's own description says it's either on or off.[1]
  • It needs the architectury-api library. The mod's author notes that many modpacks already include it.[1]

In this pack

The pack ships Accelerated Decay 21.0.0 as the NeoForge build. It has been included since version 2.25 or earlier.[2]

Unverified No quests or ATM Star path steps involving this mod were found, and no pack-specific changes to its behavior are confirmed. Treat it as a quality-of-life mod that works in the background rather than a progression step.

How do you get started with Accelerated Decay?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Accelerated Decay is a leaf-decay mod, and in the pack it works without any setup. Chop down a tree and the leaves that were holding on go away quickly, so you don't have to wait around for them.[1]

What it does

Instead of making leaf blocks tick faster, the mod removes the leaves as soon as it can. It waits a moment so the game can naturally mark the leaves as ready for removal, which keeps the behavior close to vanilla.[1]

Once the last log supporting a group of leaves is removed, the mod looks for leaves with the minecraft:leaves tag and removes those that are ready to decay. It works with any tree built from blocks in the minecraft:logs tag, so trees from other mods should be covered too, as long as they use that tag.[1]

Your first steps

  1. Find a tree and cut all of its logs, including the top ones. The decay only starts once the last supporting log is gone.[1]
  2. Wait a short moment. The leaves are removed once the game marks them as ready to decay, with no extra tools or items needed.[1]
  3. Enjoy the lower lag. The mod uses a time-based check and cuts down on particles and block ticking, which helps on both clients and servers.[1]
Tip: There's nothing to craft to get started. The mod's page describes it as simply on or off, with no complicated configs.[1]

Unverified I couldn't confirm any items, recipes, quests or pack-specific config values for this mod in the pack, so this section doesn't include any.

How does Accelerated Decay work?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Accelerated Decay is a small utility mod, not a tech mod. It has no machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item automation to learn. Its only job is to make leaves disappear faster after you chop a tree, and this section explains how it does that.[1]

How leaf removal works

Instead of making leaf blocks tick rapidly, the mod just removes them as soon as it can. It delays its own leaf-checking logic so the game can naturally mark the leaves as ready for removal first. This keeps the behavior as close to vanilla as possible.[1]

  1. You remove the last block that was supporting the leaves.[1]
  2. The mod looks for leaves with the minecraft:leaves tag.[1]
  3. Any of those leaves that are ready to decay get removed.[1]

Trees are supported as long as they are made from blocks in the minecraft:logs tag. Modded trees should work if their logs and leaves use those tags, but the sources don't say whether every tree in the pack does.[1]

Why it's light on performance

Reducing lag on clients and servers was one of the mod's goals. It uses a time-based checking system and heavily cuts back the particles and block-ticking logic. The mod's page says this, together with a very simple codebase, gives it a minimal performance impact.[1]

Configuration and requirements

The mod's page says there are no complicated configs and that it is either on or off. It also requires the Architectury API, because it fires and listens to events through it. It supports both Forge and Fabric.[1]

Unverified The sources don't show any pack-specific changes for this mod, such as config values, recipes or quests. Whether the pack alters the default behavior described above is unverified.

What changed in Accelerated Decay between versions?

1 part

FTB Skies 2: Aero 1.10.0 ships Accelerated Decay 21.0.0 (the file accelerated-decay-neoforge-21.0.0.jar). The mod was already in the pack in version 1.0.3 or earlier, so it has been part of Aero for a long time.[3]

Accelerated Decay 21.0.0

  • Ported to Minecraft 1.21.[4]
  • Switched to the NeoForge version scheme, so the version number went from 86.0.0 to 21.0.0. The mod's author admits this is confusing, so don't read it as a downgrade.[4]

The mod's changelog for 21.0.0 only lists those two changes. There is nothing there about changed behavior, so I can't tell you about any gameplay differences from this release.[4]
