What is Texture Locale Redirector?

4 parts

Texture Locale Redirector lets a resource pack carry different textures for different languages. It extends the vanilla resource loading mechanism, so a single pack can hold language-specific textures. That solves a common problem: a texture with text or symbols made for one language can get in the way of players using another.[1]

This pack ships version 1.6.0 of the mod, in its NeoForge build.[2]

Who it's for

This is a tool for resource pack makers and for players who use translated resource packs. If you never touch resource packs, you don't need to do anything with it. It adds no gameplay content of its own.[1]

How it works

A pack author stores localized textures under assets/<namespace>/textures/<language>/, where the namespace is minecraft for vanilla or the mod id for mods. The language is a code such as zh_cn or ja_jp. The relative path of each texture has to match the original texture path. To see the result, enable the resource pack and switch Minecraft to the matching language.[1]

Performance

You don't need to worry about lag from it. The mod only works when your current language is not en_us, so English players are not affected. It caches lookups to cut disk reads, clears that cache on a language change or resource reload, and releases cache memory when system memory is low. If a resource pack has no language-specific texture folder, it skips the replacement scan for that pack.[1]

Where it fits in progression

Unverified The sources I have don't show any quests, recipes or ATM Star path steps for this mod, so I can't place it anywhere in the pack's progression. Treat it as a background utility.

How do you get started with Texture Locale Redirector?

3 parts

Texture Locale Redirector isn't a mod where you craft anything first. It's a resource pack helper. It lets a single resource pack carry language-specific textures, so a texture with text or symbols for one language doesn't get in the way of players using another language.[1]

The sources I have only describe a resource pack workflow, so here is the order to follow if you want to use it.[1]

The three steps

  1. Make sure the mod is in your mods folder. That's the install step the mod itself asks for.[1]
  2. Create a resource pack and organize your localized textures in the required folder structure.[1]
  3. Start the game, enable the resource pack, and switch Minecraft to the matching language.[1]

Setting up the folder structure

Inside your resource pack, store localized textures under assets/<namespace>/textures/<language>/. The namespace is minecraft for vanilla, or the mod id for a mod. The language is a language code such as zh_cn for Simplified Chinese or ja_jp for Japanese.[1]

For example, a replacement dirt texture for Simplified Chinese goes in assets/minecraft/textures/zh_cn/block/dirt.png. A replacement diamond sword texture goes in the item folder, in the same way.[1]

Watch out: The relative path of the texture you want to replace must match the original texture path. If the path differs, the redirect won't line up with the texture you're targeting.[1]

Good to know before you test

  • The mod only works when the current language is not en_us, so you won't see any change while playing in English.[1]
  • It caches textures and clears that cache when you change language or reload resources, so your changes show up right away.[1]
  • If a resource pack has no language-specific texture folder, no replacement scan is performed for it. It also doesn't interfere with your other resource packs.[1]

Unverified I couldn't confirm any in-pack recipes, quests or config options for this mod from the available sources, so there are no recipe blocks or quest links in this section.

How does Texture Locale Redirector work?

3 parts

Texture Locale Redirector isn't a machine or content mod. The project page describes it as a resource-loading tool: it extends vanilla resource loading so a single resource pack can carry language-specific textures. The page mentions no machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item automation, so there are none to cover here.[1]

What it does

Some textures contain text or symbols that only make sense in one language. The mod lets a resource pack supply a different version of those textures for each language, so a texture made for one language doesn't get in the way of players using another.[1]

How the redirect works

Localized textures go under assets/<namespace>/textures/<language>/ inside your resource pack. The namespace is minecraft for vanilla or the mod id for mods. The language is a code such as zh_cn for Simplified Chinese or ja_jp for Japanese.[1]

The relative path of a replacement texture has to match the original texture's path. For example, a replacement for the vanilla dirt block texture goes in the language folder under block, using the file name dirt.png.[1]

  1. Install the mod by placing it in the mods folder.[1]
  2. Create a resource pack and organize the localized textures in the required folder structure.[1]
  3. Start the game, enable the resource pack and switch Minecraft to the matching language.[1]

When it is active

  • It only works when the current language is not en_us, so it has no effect for English players.[1]
  • It uses a caching system to cut down on disk reads. The cache is cleared when you change language or reload resources, so textures update immediately.[1]
  • It releases cache memory automatically when system memory is low.[1]
  • If a resource pack has no language-specific texture folder, no replacement scan is performed for it.[1]
  • It doesn't interfere with how other resource packs normally work.[1]
Tip: If you play in English, this mod does nothing for you. To see it work, switch to another language and use a resource pack that includes a language folder for that language.[1]

Unverified This pack has no config files, recipes or quests confirmed for this mod, so nothing in the pack changes or extends the behavior described above.

What changed in Texture Locale Redirector between versions?

2 parts

FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 ships Texture Locale Redirector 1.6.0. The mod was first included in FTB Skies 2 1.9.2 or earlier. Here are the notable changes from the mod's own changelogs, newest first.[2]

Mod releases

  • 1.6.0 (the version in this pack): the changelog lists support for 1.20 to 1.20.2. The jar in the pack is named for 1.21.x, and the changelog says nothing more about that.[2][3]
  • 1.5.0: a major rewrite. Resource replacement is now handled entirely by a Mixin on the vanilla backend (NamespaceResourceManager). That removes the need for per-mod compatibility and, in theory, lets replacement work for all mods.[4]
  • 1.4.0: fixed incorrect path handling that spammed the log with "Invalid path" errors, and fixed the Fabric version wrongly requiring Fabric API when it isn't needed.[5]

What the 1.5.0 rewrite fixed

The 1.5.0 rewrite also fixed FTB Quests bugs. Adding an image in quest edit mode used to turn the image path in the config file into a hard-coded, localized path. Quest images with no localized resource used to show up as purple-and-black missing textures. The dedicated FTB Quests compatibility code was removed, since the new approach doesn't need it. The Mixin plugin (Conditional Mixin) was removed too.[4]

Items and blocks

We can't match this mod to the pack's item list: it registers as texturelocaleredirector, and the pack's recipe dump has nothing under that name. That means we found nothing, not that the mod adds nothing. Search the item browser
