What is Redstone Pen?
3 parts
Redstone Pen is all about making redstone wiring neater and more compact. Instead of placing dust blocks, you draw thin redstone tracks with a pen, and you can even run several independent tracks through a single block space. This pack ships version 1.11.42.[1][2]
What you get
- Redstone Quill and Redstone Pen: both draw and remove tracks. The Quill pulls redstone dust straight from your inventory, while the Pen stores redstone inside the item and can be refilled in the crafting grid with Redstone Dust or Redstone Blocks.[1]
- Signal inspection: sneak while holding a pen or quill and look at a block, track, wire or device to see its current signal.[1]
- Block signal connectors: tracks normally do not connect to the block they are drawn on. Click the centre of a track with a pen to add a connector when you do want that link.[1]
- Redstone Relays: placeable on solid faces in any direction, with output only to the front. The types are Redstone Relay, Inverted, Bi-Stable, Pulse and Bridging, and the Bridging Relay lets tracks cross.[1]
- Redstone Logic Control: a simplified, PLC-like signal controller that you program with text code.[1]
Who it is for
If you build tight redstone contraptions and want to choose exactly which blocks get powered, this mod is for you. Tracks do not pass indirect power through blocks to other tracks, so you can feed the same block from separate routes without them interfering. Relays do detect indirect power from the block they sit on, so you can use them to carry a track signal through a block.[1]
Where it fits in the pack
The pack has one quest that touches this mod. It sits in the useful_items_tips chapter, and its task is the Redstone Remote. The quest is "Wireless Redstone Control!" quest.[3]
Unverified The sources do not say what the Redstone Remote does, how it is crafted in this pack, or whether the pack changed any of the mod's recipes or values, so check in-game before relying on any of that. This site does hold FTB Skies 2's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.
How do you get started with Redstone Pen?
5 parts
Redstone Pen is all about drawing thin, tidy redstone tracks, re-powering signals with relays, and programming a small logic controller. Here is the order to make things in, and why.[1]
Step one: the Redstone Quill
Start with the Redstone Quill. It draws and removes thin redstone tracks, and it takes the redstone dust straight from your inventory, so there is nothing to fill or manage. Several independent tracks can share the space of one block.[1]
Step two: the Redstone Pen
The Redstone Pen does the same job, but it stores redstone inside the item. You refill it in the crafting grid with redstone dust or redstone blocks, so you do not spend dust from your inventory with every stroke.[1]

Step three: the Redstone Relay
Next, craft a Redstone Relay. It re-powers an incoming signal back up to 15. It can be placed on solid faces in all directions, with its output only at the front and inputs on every side except from above. Unlike a repeater it has no switch-on delay, but it does have a switch-off delay of one tick.[1]

The other relay types are made by converting one relay into the next, in a loop:[4]
- Turn a Redstone Relay into an Inverted Redstone Relay, where input on gives output off.[1][4]
- Turn the inverted relay into a Bi-Stable Redstone Relay, which flips its output on each off-to-on edge of the input.[1][4]
- Turn the bi-stable relay into a Pulse Redstone Relay, which emits a short pulse on that same rising edge.[1][4]
- Turn the pulse relay into a Bridging Redstone Relay, which lets tracks cross by adding an independent left-to-right wire. Crafting the bridging relay on its own gives you a plain relay again.[1][4]

Step four: buttons, levers and a gauge
The Basic Button, Basic Lever and Basic Pulse Button are the input devices. The pack has changed all three recipes from the mod's own, so use these ones. The pulse button emits a redstone signal for one tick.[4][5]

The Redstone Logic Control is a simplified PLC-like controller that you program with text expressions. The pack has changed its recipe as well, and it uses a Redstone Quill as one of its ingredients, so you will already have the first item from this list.[1][4][5]

How does Redstone Pen work?
7 parts
Redstone Pen covers a few connected systems: thin redstone tracks you draw yourself, relays that re-power a signal, and a text-programmable controller. Here is how each one works.[1]
Drawing tracks
The Redstone Quill and the Redstone Pen both draw and remove thin redstone tracks in all directions, and several independent tracks can share one block space. The Quill takes redstone dust straight from your inventory. The Pen stores redstone inside the item, and you refill it in the crafting grid with redstone dust or redstone blocks.[1][5]
- With the Pen in hand, right-click places a track, left-click removes one, and sneaking lets you place center connectors.[5]
- Tracks normally do not power the block they sit on. Click the center of a track to add an explicit connector.[1]
- Tracks deliberately do not pass indirect power through blocks to other tracks, so you can feed the same block from separate routes without interference.[1]
- Sneak while holding the pen or quill and look at a block, track, wire or device to see the redstone signal it currently has.[1][5]
- Left-clicking with either tool does not destroy blocks, except blocks with no hardness such as grass, repeaters or comparators.[1]
- The Pen's help text warns that too many tracks on unconnected faces of one block cause cross-talk and will not work. If that happens, re-route.[5]

Relays
Relays can be placed on solid faces in all directions. Output goes only to the front, and inputs are accepted from every side except above. They re-lay a signal at power 15. They also detect indirect power from the block they are placed on, so you can use them to carry a track signal through a block.[1][5]
- Redstone Relay: has no switch-on delay, but a switch-off delay of one redstone tick. A redstone tick is 100 ms.[1]
- Inverted Redstone Relay: an input-on, output-off relay, so its output is off while it receives a signal.[1]
- Bi-Stable Redstone Relay: flips its output each time it detects a rising edge (off to on) at the input.[1]
- Pulse Redstone Relay: emits a short pulse at the output when it detects a rising edge (off to on) at the input.[1]
- Bridging Redstone Relay: forwards power from back to front like a normal relay and has an additional independent wire from left to right, so you can cross tracks.[1][4]
In this pack, the base relay is crafted directly, and the other types are made by converting one relay into the next in a chain: relay, inverted, bi-stable, pulse, bridging, and then back to the plain relay.[4]

The Redstone Remote activates buttons and levers. Left-click a button or lever with it to mark that block's position, then use the remote later to trigger that block. The block's chunk has to be loaded, and it does not work across dimensions. The pack changed its recipe.[4][5]

Redstone Logic Control
The built-in help describes the Redstone Logic Control (RLC) as a simplified PLC-like controller with digital and analog redstone input and output in all directions. Its ports are named after the first letters of Red, Blue, Yellow, Green, Up and Down, so R, B, Y, G, U and D. You program it with math expressions, and all lines are calculated in the same tick: read inputs, calculate, write outputs. Code is case insensitive, and your own variables keep their values until the RLC is stopped.[1][5]

In the screen, click RUN/STOP to start or stop a program. Parse errors are marked, and you can hover over them. Errors prevent the program from starting. While it is running, hover the RLC symbol to see variable values. The port list shows each port's current value and whether it is an input, an output or unused. There are also buttons to copy the code to the clipboard and paste it back.[5]
Writing expressions
- In RLC code, every line is an assignment like "R = G & B". A "#" turns the rest of the line into a comment.[5]
- In an RLC program, assigning to a port makes it an output and ignores input changes there. Using a port that is not already an output in an expression makes it an input.[5]
- In an RLC expression, add ".CO" to read the comparator output of an adjacent block, for example "Y = MAX( B.CO, R, g.co, MyVar )". Comparator outputs are never RLC outputs, even if you assign to them.[5]
- RLC arithmetic is integer only, so "A * 1.5" is rejected, and division rounds toward zero. The operators are +, -, *, / and % (modulo). Variables hold 32-bit integers, but port values are clamped to 0..15. Division by zero yields 0.[5]
- RLC comparisons (==, !=, >=, <=, >, <) give 0 for false and 15 for true. The built-in help recommends the IF function over doing math on the result: "G = IF( R>11, 5, 0 )".[5]
- RLC logic operators are AND ("AND", "&&", "&"), OR ("OR", "||", "|"), XOR ("XOR", "^") and NOT ("NOT", "!"). Any value above 0 counts as true, results are 0 or 15, and there are no bitwise operations.[5]
Edges, timers and counters
In RLC code, add ".RE" to an input for a rising edge, or ".FE" for a falling edge. Each gives 15 for one tick when the input changes. Edges are still detected on input ports even when the RLC is not executing that tick.[5]
There are three timer types, TON (switch-on delay), TOF (switch-off delay) and TP (pulse on a rising edge), with 5 instances of each. You write them like "A = TON3( INPUT_TERM, ON_DELAY_TICKS )". A TON needs the input steadily on for the set time, and any off signal resets it immediately. A TP ignores signal changes during its pulse. You can change the timer settings while a timer is active.[5]
The RLC has five up-down counters, CNT1 to CNT5, with optional arguments for count up, count down, minimum, maximum and reset, for example "N = CNTx(Iup, Idown, Min, Max, Reset)". The help says to feed them signal edges such as G.RE rather than levels. Counters are not guaranteed to be tick-accurate, so use timers when timing matters.[5]
Other built-in RLC functions are IF, INV (15 minus X), MAX, MIN, MEAN, LIM, TIME (day time), CLOCK (game time) and RND (random 0..15). The interval generators TIV1 to TIV3 pulse every T ticks, optionally gated by an enable input. The minimum interval is 3 ticks.[5]

How do you progress through Redstone Pen?
5 parts
Redstone Pen does not have a ladder of tool tiers in this pack. What the recipes show is a crafting chain: the pen and quill, a family of relays that convert into one another, a few input items, and the logic control that builds on the quill. The quest book only touches the mod once.[3][4]
The quest
The pack's quest book places the mod in the useful_items_tips chapter. There, "Wireless Redstone Control!" quest is an untitled quest with an item task for the Redstone Remote.[3]

The relay chain
Of the relays, only the base Redstone Relay is crafted from raw materials. Every other relay type is made by putting the previous one in the crafting grid on its own, so the chain looks like this:[4]
- Craft the Redstone Relay from the mod's shaped recipe.[4]
- Turn it into an Inverted Redstone Relay.[4]
- Turn that into a Bi-Stable Redstone Relay.[4]
- Turn that into a Pulse Redstone Relay.[4]
- Turn that into a Bridging Redstone Relay.[4]
- Put the bridging relay in the grid on its own to get the basic relay back.[4]

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Redstone Pen?
Redstone Pen only shows up in one quest chapter in the pack, so this section is short. The chapter is called "useful_items_tips", and the mod appears there through a single quest.[3]
- Chapter "useful_items_tips": the quest "Wireless Redstone Control!" quest has no title in the pack files. Its task is to obtain the Redstone Remote.[3]
Since it's the only quest involving the mod, there's no order to follow between Redstone Pen quests. You just need to get the remote to finish it.[3]
Unverified The sources don't say what rewards this quest gives, whether it depends on other quests, or where it sits within the chapter, so those details are unconfirmed.
