What is Overflowing Bars?
2 parts
Overflowing Bars is a HUD mod. It expands your health, armor and armor toughness bars past what vanilla can show, and it keeps them compact and easy to read. The pack includes version 21.1.1 for NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21.1.[1][2]
What it does
- Instead of adding extra rows of icons, it stacks bars into layers. Your HUD stays small even with very high health, armor or toughness.[1]
- When a stat goes past the vanilla limit, a row counter tells you how many layers you have. You don't have to memorize a color scheme.[1]
- It adds a dedicated armor toughness bar. Vanilla doesn't show that stat on the HUD.[1]
- Colors stay simple: the vanilla color is the base layer, and one highlight color marks stacked layers. There is no rainbow display to decode.[1]
- It includes a chat compatibility fix, so chat messages don't cover armor-related HUD elements.[1]
- Positioning, stacking behavior, counters and display options can all be adjusted to suit your HUD setup.[1]
Who it is for
It's for anyone who ends up with more health, armor or toughness than vanilla was built to display. It's a client-side convenience, since the mod needs to be installed on the client. It doesn't add items, recipes or progression content of its own.[1]
Unverified Where Overflowing Bars fits in the pack's progression is unconfirmed. No quests involve this mod, and it isn't on the ATM Star path.
How do you get started with Overflowing Bars?
2 parts
Good news: there's nothing to craft here. Overflowing Bars is a HUD mod, so there's no first item to make and no setup to do before you play. It changes how your health, armor and armor toughness bars are drawn on screen.[1]
What you'll notice
- Health, armor and armor toughness stack into compact layers instead of adding extra rows of icons once you go past the vanilla limits.[1]
- A row counter shows how many layers of health, armor or toughness you have, so you don't need to memorize a color scheme.[1]
- Vanilla colors are used for the base layer, with a single highlight color for stacked layers.[1]
- You get a dedicated armor toughness bar, a stat vanilla doesn't show on the HUD.[1]
- A chat compatibility fix stops chat messages from covering the armor-related HUD elements.[1]
Tweaking the layout
Config files live in the config folder and are named after the mod id, ending in client, common or server depending on the type. Not every type exists for every mod. The HUD options are the kind of thing you'd expect in a client config, but I can't confirm the exact file name or option names in this pack.[1]
Unverified The mod's page recommends AttributeFix for proper support of armor and toughness values beyond vanilla limits. Whether this pack includes it is unverified.
Unverified No quests in this pack involve this mod, and no recipes produce its items, so there is no in-pack progression or crafting to follow for it.
How does Overflowing Bars work?
4 parts
Overflowing Bars is a HUD mod, so this section has no machines, multiblocks, power or item handling to cover. What the mod does is change how your health, armor and armor toughness bars are drawn once your stats go past vanilla limits. The sources describe nothing beyond that, and I won't guess at anything else.[1]
How the stacking works
Instead of adding extra rows of icons, the mod stacks the bars into layers that take up far less space. Vanilla colors are the base layer, and a single highlight color marks the stacked layers. You don't have to memorize a rainbow of colors to know which layer you're looking at.[1]
When your stats exceed the vanilla limits, a row counter shows how many layers of health, armor or toughness you have. The mod can also add a dedicated armor toughness bar, which vanilla doesn't display.[1]
The three bars
Health, armor and toughness each have their own settings in the client config. The pack leaves every one of them at the mod's default value.[3]
- health.allow_layers and its armor and toughness equivalents are on in the pack. If you turn one off, the mod's changes to that bar are switched off.[3]
- toughness.armor_toughness_bar is on, so toughness (from diamond and netherite armor) gets its own bar. With only this option active, that bar behaves like vanilla's armor bar, without the colorful stacking.[3]
- toughness.left_side is off in the pack. Turn it on to draw the toughness bar on the left above the hotbar, where health and armor are drawn.[3]
- armor.skip_empty_armor_points and toughness.skip_empty_armor_points are on. Empty armor points aren't drawn, which can make those bars shorter.[3]
- armor.move_chat_above_armor is on. It moves chat messages above the armor and absorption bar so they don't cover it.[1][3]
Colors and positioning
- health.colorize_first_row is off for health, armor and toughness. Colored icons only show on the rows after the first, and the front row keeps the vanilla look.[3]
- health.inverse_coloring is also off. If you enable it, vanilla icons are used on all front rows and the custom colored icons go on the background row.[3]
- health.manual_row_shift is 0 by default and accepts values from -5 to 5. It shifts a bar up or down by that many icon rows, which helps if another HUD mod overlaps it. Armor and toughness have the same option.[3]
The row counter
Each bar has its own allow_count option, for example health.allow_count. All are on in the pack. The counter exists because not every row is visible at once with stacked rendering. A shared group of settings controls how the number looks.[3]
- row_count.always_render_row_count is off, so the counter isn't shown when only one row is present.[3]
- row_count.count_full_rows_only is off. Turn it on to count only completely filled rows.[3]
- row_count.row_count_x is on, so an 'x' is drawn together with the number.[3]
- row_count.row_count_color is WHITE. It accepts any chat formatting color name, such as GOLD or RED.[3]
- row_count.force_font_renderer is off. Turning it on draws the count with the font renderer, which makes the numbers larger.[3]
Which Overflowing Bars config options matter?
5 parts
Overflowing Bars is a client-side mod, so all of its settings live in config/overflowingbars-client.toml. The good news is that you don't need to fix anything. Every option in this pack's file is set to the mod default, so the pack hasn't changed any values.[1][3]
Turning the stacking on or off
Each bar has its own switch for layers: health.allow_layers, armor.allow_layers and toughness.allow_layers. Every one of them is true in the pack. If you turn a bar's switch off, the mod stops changing that bar.[3]
Row counter
When a bar has more rows than can be shown at once, a counter tells you how many there are. Each bar has an allow_count option, for example health.allow_count, and all of them are true in the pack. The shared row_count options change how the number looks:[3]
- row_count.always_render_row_count is false, so the counter stays hidden when only one row is present.[3]
- row_count.count_full_rows_only is false, so rows that aren't completely filled still count.[3]
- row_count.row_count_x is true, so an 'x' is drawn next to the number.[3]
- row_count.row_count_color is "WHITE". You can swap in any chat formatting color, such as GOLD or AQUA.[3]
- row_count.force_font_renderer is false. Turning it on draws the number with the font renderer, which makes it larger.[3]
Colors
health.colorize_first_row, armor.colorize_first_row and toughness.colorize_first_row are all false in the pack, so colorful icons only show on the rows after the front one. The inverse_coloring options, such as health.inverse_coloring, are false for every bar too. Turning one on gives that bar vanilla icons on all front rows and custom colored icons on the background row.[3]
Armor and toughness
- toughness.armor_toughness_bar is true, so armor toughness (from diamond and netherite armor) gets its own bar.[3]
- toughness.left_side is false, so the toughness bar isn't moved to the left side above the hotbar.[3]
- armor.skip_empty_armor_points and toughness.skip_empty_armor_points are both true, so empty armor points aren't drawn and the bar can end up shorter.[3]
- armor.move_chat_above_armor is true, so chat messages are moved above the armor and absorption bar instead of covering it.[3]
Fixing HUD overlap with other mods
If another mod draws on top of a bar, use the manual_row_shift options: health.manual_row_shift, armor.manual_row_shift and toughness.manual_row_shift. They move a bar up or down by a number of icon rows, from -5 to 5. Each is 0 in the pack, the same as the mod default.[3]
What changed in Overflowing Bars between versions?
1 part
FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 ships Overflowing Bars 21.1.1, and the mod was first included in FTB Skies 2 1.20.0 or earlier. The mod's own changelog is short, so here is everything it records.[2]
Mod changelog
- v21.1.1-1.21.1 (2024-09-30): fixed the bars still rendering when you hide the HUD with F1. This is the version in the pack.[2][4]
- v21.1.0-1.21.1 (2024-09-29): ported the mod to Minecraft 1.21.1.[4]
Unverified Whether the FTB Skies 2 release changelogs mention Overflowing Bars is not shown in the sources here, so no pack-level changes are listed. Check the pack's own changelogs for that.
