What is MSS - Moog's Soaring Structures?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.2 guide

MSS - Moog's Soaring Structures fills your world with vanilla style floating islands. Each one is packed with loot, mobs and dungeons, and some have villagers too, so there's always something to go and explore up in the sky.[1]

The structures are built from vanilla blocks and entities. That means the mod adds new places to find without bringing a pile of new materials with it.[1]

In this pack

The pack ships version 2.2.0 of the mod. It has been in the pack since 1.7 or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the world generation.[2]

Customising it

Every aspect of the mod can be customised with datapacks. The mod author offers a config pack template with full instructions. I haven't checked whether this pack changes any of the mod's defaults, so check before you rely on a specific structure setting.[1]

The mod can also be installed on a server only, which is handy if you run a multiplayer world.[1]

How do you get started with MSS - Moog's Soaring Structures?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Good news: there's nothing special to craft first. This mod adds floating islands with cool buildings to explore, and they're built with vanilla blocks and entities. Your first step is simply to get out there and find them.[1][3]

What to do first

  1. Explore and keep an eye on the sky. The structures are floating islands, so look up as you travel.[1]
  2. Get ready for what's on them. Islands can hold loot, mobs, dungeons and villagers, so bring gear and supplies for a fight.[1][3]
  3. Land on an island, explore the buildings, and collect the loot you find along the way.[1][3]

Finding them more or less often

The mod has a universal rarity setting that multiplies the spacing of every Moog's structure. A higher value makes them rarer and a lower value makes them more common. There is also a per-mod version of this multiplier.[4]

Tip: Because the islands use vanilla blocks and entities, you don't have to learn any new materials to take them on. Just bring your usual adventuring kit.[3]

Unverified The sources don't show any in-pack recipes or quests for this mod, and they don't confirm the rarity values this pack uses. If you want to know how often islands appear in your world, check the config in your own instance.

How does MSS - Moog's Soaring Structures work?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

This one works differently from most mods you'll see on the channel. It's described as a world-generation mod that adds lots of floating islands with buildings and other things to explore. The islands are made with vanilla blocks and entities, and you'll find loot, enemies and villagers on them.[1][3]

Unverified The available sources don't describe any machines, multiblocks, power, fluid or item-automation systems for this mod, so none are covered here. No recipes or in-pack config files for it were found either.

How often structures appear

The one system the sources explain is structure spacing. The mod has a universal rarity option that multiplies the spacing of every Moog's structure. A higher value makes the structures rarer and a lower value makes them more common.[4]

There is also a per-mod rarity option that multiplies the spacing of every structure belonging to a given mod. The sources don't say which mods it applies to or what its default value is.[4]

Unverified The default spacing values and the exact config file or key names for these rarity options are not confirmed by the sources, and no config files for this mod were found in the pack.

Customizing with datapacks

The project page says every aspect of the mod can be customized with datapacks, and it points to a config-pack template with full instructions. If you want to change how the structures behave, that's the route the mod's author describes.[1]

Server-side installation

The mod is described as compatible with any modpack, and it can be installed on the server only. That means players don't need it on their own client to see its structures.[1][3]

Which MSS - Moog's Soaring Structures config options matter?

3 parts

The mod's config in this pack is split into two files. One switches each structure on or off, and the other controls how each structure is placed in the world. Both are listed below exactly as the pack sets them.[5][6]

Structure toggles

Every structure toggle in arena.arena and the rest of that file is set to true. Nothing is switched off, so every island type in the file is enabled, from the arena and the volcano to the palm island, the desert pyramid and all the tree variants.[6]

Tip: If you don't like a particular island type, set its toggle in the structure toggle file to false. For example, use volcano.volcano for the volcano.[6]

Structure placement

Each structure has three placement values: spacing, separation and salt. Here are a few of the values this pack uses.[5]

The salt is a per-structure number, for example 982034754 for arena.salt. Every structure in the file has its own salt entry.[5]

Customizing further

The mod's project page says every aspect of the mod can be customized through datapacks, and it points to a template config pack with instructions. It also says the mod can be installed on the server only.[1]

What changed in MSS - Moog's Soaring Structures between versions?

1 part

FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 ships MSS - Moog's Soaring Structures at version 1.21-2.1.2. The mod has been in the pack since FTB Skies 2 1.0.1 or earlier. I don't have any pack changelog entries for this mod, so everything below comes from the mod's own changelogs.[7]

Mod changelog highlights

  • 1.3.5-1.21 added c biome tags. It also adjusted the spacing values to make all structures rarer, and it fixed broken NBT files.[8]
  • 1.21-2.0.0 updated to the datapack version, which depends on moogs_structures. It also fixed jigsaw alignment issues.[9]
  • 2.1.2 gave versioned structures a defined path for Minecraft 26.1 to 26.1.2. The game no longer logs "no version mapping matched" warnings, and it no longer falls back to an older structure template.[10]

The 2.1.2 fix is written for Minecraft 26.1 to 26.1.2. The changelog doesn't say whether it changes anything on the version this pack runs.[7][10]
