What is Legendary Tooltips?
3 parts
Legendary Tooltips makes item tooltips look a lot better. You can pick a selection of items and give them an embellished, framed tooltip, so rare gear stands out the moment you hover over it.[1]
It also adds a pile of general tooltip options: centered item names, tooltip shadows, borders that match an item's color, separators under item names, 3D item previews, compact tooltips, and more.[1]
How custom borders work
The mod supports up to sixteen custom borders. Each border can be applied to items by name, mod, tag, vanilla rarity, item name color, display name, tooltip text, or NBT tag. It ships with one default border, and more can be added with a resource pack.[1]
It doesn't change the underlying tooltip behavior, it only adds on top. It also integrates with Equipment Compare for fancier comparison tooltips.[1]
Who it is for
This is a quality-of-life and visual mod, so it's for anyone who wants clearer, nicer tooltips. It is fully client-side, so it only changes how tooltips look on your own screen. Resource pack makers can also use it to design their own borders.[1]
In this pack
The pack includes Legendary Tooltips 1.5.5, built for Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge. It needs Iceberg, and versions 1.3 and up also need Prism.[1][2]
Unverified The sources I have don't show any progression role for this mod. I found no quests involving it, and it isn't on the ATM Star path. I also can't confirm whether the pack changes any of its default settings.
How do you get started with Legendary Tooltips?
2 parts
Good news: this mod doesn't ask you to craft anything to get going. Legendary Tooltips changes how item tooltips look, and it is fully client-side, so it only affects what you see on your own screen.[1]
What it does for you
It can turn the tooltips of items you choose into fancier, embellished ones. It also adds extra tooltip options such as centered item names, tooltip shadows, borders that match item colors, separators under item names, 3D item previews and compact tooltips.[1]
Your first steps
- Hover over some items in your inventory to see how tooltips look right now. The mod includes one default custom border, so any item the config applies it to will show that frame.[1]
- Read the mod's configuration instructions before you change anything. The mod's author asks players to do this first, because the config file explains how to set tooltips up however you like.[1]
- Decide which items should get a custom border. The mod supports up to sixteen custom borders, and each can be applied to items by name, mod, tag, vanilla rarity, item name color, display name, tooltip text or NBT tag.[1]
- If you want more frames than the default, add them with a resource pack. Resource packs can replace the default border with up to 16 custom ones. The author points to a resource pack called Eclectic Trove as an example.[1]
The mod is described as highly compatible because it adds to the normal tooltip behavior instead of changing it. It also works with Equipment Compare for fancier comparison tooltips.[1]
Unverified The sources I have don't show any crafting recipes or quests for this mod in this pack, and they don't show which tooltip settings or border assignments this pack ships with. Check the config file in your own instance to see what is set up.
How does Legendary Tooltips work?
4 parts
Legendary Tooltips has no machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item automation. It's a fully client-side mod that restyles item tooltips and adds extra tooltip options. So this section covers how its tooltip system works instead of a machine setup. That's still handy to know if you want to tweak how tooltips look.[1]
Custom borders and levels
The mod supports up to sixteen custom borders. Each border can be applied to items by name, mod, tag, vanilla rarity, item name color, display name, tooltip text or NBT tag. The default border is built in, and more can be added through a resource pack.[1]
In this pack's config, those sixteen borders show up as numbered levels. Each level has an entries list, for example client.definitions.level0_entries, which holds the selectors that decide which items get that border. Each level also has a colors list, for example client.colors.level0_colors.[1][3]
In this pack, only the first level has entries: !epic, !rare, !uncommon and !common. Every other level has an empty entry list, and all sixteen levels use the same color list.[3]
Unverified The sources don't explain what the ! prefix in the first level's entries means, how the color values are read, or how the priorities list (client.priorities.priorities) decides which border wins when several match. The pack lists the priorities in numeric order, one per level.
The blacklist (client.definitions.blacklist) takes selectors in the same format as the entries. Items that match it will not show a border. In this pack it's empty.[3]
Tooltip options in this pack
- client.visual_options.borders_match_rarity is on, so border colors match item rarity colors (except custom borders).[3]
- client.visual_options.centered_title, client.visual_options.name_separator, client.visual_options.show_separator_for_empty and client.visual_options.tooltip_shadow are all on. That gives you centered titles, a line under item names (shown on all tooltips, not just item tooltips) and a drop shadow.[3]
- client.visual_options.compact_tooltips is on, which removes some unnecessary text and spacing from equipment tooltips.[3]
- client.visual_options.shine_effect is on, so items with a custom border get a shine effect when you hover over them.[3]
- client.visual_options.enforce_minimum_width is off, so tooltips with custom borders aren't forced to be wide enough for every border decoration.[3]
- client.visual_options.fix_mc271840 is on. It fixes a vanilla bug where tooltip damage values are wrong for weapons with Sharpness.[3]
3D models in tooltips
client.visual_options.render_item_model is set to EQUIPMENT in this pack. The allowed values are NONE, EQUIPMENT and ALL. With EQUIPMENT, a 3D model is only rendered for armor, tools and items with durability.[3]
client.visual_options.model_rotation_speed is 12, which matches the mod default. Lower values rotate faster, and 0 turns rotation off.[3]
Size limits and scrolling
These options are marked experimental in the config. client.visual_options.enable_tooltip_scrolling is set to NEVER in this pack, with ALWAYS and WITH_KEYBIND as the other allowed values. client.visual_options.max_tooltip_width and client.visual_options.max_tooltip_height are both 0, meaning no limit, which is also the mod default. client.visual_options.scroll_speed is 10, the mod default, but it only matters if you turn scrolling on.[3]
Which Legendary Tooltips config options matter?
3 parts
Legendary Tooltips is fully client-side, so everything here only changes what you see on your own screen. All of the pack's settings live in the client part of config/legendarytooltips.toml. Most of the options are cosmetic, and I'll go through the ones you're most likely to touch.[1][3]
Visual options
- client.visual_options.borders_match_rarity is true, so tooltip border colors match item rarity colors (custom borders excepted).[3]
- client.visual_options.centered_title is true, so tooltip titles are drawn centered.[3]
- client.visual_options.compact_tooltips is true, which strips some unnecessary text and spacing from equipment tooltips.[3]
- client.visual_options.name_separator and client.visual_options.show_separator_for_empty are both true. That gives you a line under item names, and the separator is shown for all tooltips, not just item tooltips.[3]
- client.visual_options.tooltip_shadow is true, so tooltips get a drop shadow. client.visual_options.shine_effect is also true, so items with a custom border get a shine effect when you hover over them.[3]
- client.visual_options.render_item_model is set to "EQUIPMENT" (the options are NONE, EQUIPMENT and ALL). Only armor, tools and items with durability get a 3D model in the tooltip.[3]
- client.visual_options.model_rotation_speed is 12, the same as the mod default. Lower values rotate faster, and 0 disables rotation.[3]
- client.visual_options.enforce_minimum_width is false, so tooltips with custom borders are not forced to be wide enough for every border decoration.[3]
- client.visual_options.fix_mc271840 is true. It fixes a vanilla bug where the damage values shown for weapons with Sharpness are incorrect.[3]
Scrolling and size limits
client.visual_options.enable_tooltip_scrolling is set to "NEVER" (the options are ALWAYS, WITH_KEYBIND and NEVER), so oversized tooltips don't scroll with the mouse wheel. The mod marks this feature as experimental. client.visual_options.max_tooltip_height and client.visual_options.max_tooltip_width are both 0, which means no limit and matches the mod default. client.visual_options.scroll_speed is 10, also the mod default, and only matters once scrolling is turned on.[3]
Custom border slots
The mod supports up to sixteen custom borders, and the config has a matching entries option for each slot. In this pack only the first slot has any rules: client.definitions.level0_entries is ["!epic","!rare","!uncommon","!common"]. All the other slots (for example client.definitions.level1_entries) are empty lists. The blacklist, client.definitions.blacklist, is empty too, so no items are excluded from borders.[1][3]
Every slot uses the same colors, ["#57faff","#57d6ff","#131313-a40","#131313-a40"]. You can see this in client.colors.level0_colors and in the other color options. client.priorities.priorities lists the slots in order, from 0 up to 15.[3]
What changed in Legendary Tooltips between versions?
1 part
FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 ships Legendary Tooltips 1.5.5. The mod has been in the pack since FTB Skies 2 1.0.1 or earlier, so it is a long-standing part of the modpack.[2]
Legendary Tooltips 1.5.5
This is the version you get in the pack right now. Its own changelog lists three changes:[2][4]
- Fixed an issue that could cause GUI elements to disappear when used together with the Trash Slot mod.[4]
- Added slight shading to the background of 3D item previews, which helps you tell dark items apart.[4]
- Fixed an issue that could cause 3D item previews to cut through tooltips.[4]
Unverified No pack changelog entries for this mod were available, so what changed for Legendary Tooltips between individual FTB Skies 2 releases is unverified.
