What is Hang Glider?
2 parts
Hang Glider adds a hang glider to the game so you can soar through the skies. You deploy it, leap from a cliff, and glide with smooth, natural flight controls. It's built for scenic travel and exploring, so it suits anyone who wants a more fun way to cross the world.[1]
Wind and movement affect your flight, so you have to stay on course as you glide. If you want more speed, you can reinforce your glider for faster and sturdier flights. The mod also describes its mechanics as highly configurable.[1]
In this pack
The pack includes Hang Glider 21.1.0, the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.1.[2]
The mod needs to be installed on both the client and the server. It also depends on Puzzles Lib. If you run a server for friends, make sure everyone has it.[1]
Hang Glider is mostly a port of the Open Glider mod by gr8pefish, and it reuses the original mod's assets.[1]
Progression
Unverified The sources I have don't show where Hang Glider fits in the pack's progression. They show no quests that involve it and no place for it on the ATM Star path. The pack's crafting recipe for the glider and any pack-specific config changes are also unconfirmed, so check in game before you plan around them.
How do you get started with Hang Glider?
3 parts
Hang Glider adds a glider you deploy, then leap from a cliff and glide with smooth, natural flight controls. Wind and movement shape the flight, so you need to keep steering to stay on course.[1]
The Hang Glider
Start with the Hang Glider. It is the base item of the mod, and the upgrade in the next step builds on it. Deploy it, jump from somewhere high, and you're gliding.[1][3]
Upgrade to the Reinforced Hang Glider
Once you have a glider, upgrade it. The Reinforced Hang Glider is crafted from the plain Hang Glider, and the mod's own description says reinforcing gives you faster and sturdier flights. Don't spend your first glider on anything else.[1][3]

This is the in-pack recipe for the Reinforced Hang Glider, a mod recipe in this pack's recipe list.
Good to know
How does Hang Glider work?
6 parts
Hang Glider adds a glider you deploy and use to soar after leaping from a height. The pack has two versions: the Hang Glider and the Reinforced Hang Glider, which is meant for faster and sturdier flights. The mod needs to be installed on both the client and the server.[1][4][5]
Upgrading to the reinforced glider
The reinforced glider is a crafted upgrade of the basic one. Here is the exact in-pack recipe:[3]
Copy Components Shaped Recipe (hangglider)
Recipe id: hangglider:reinforced_hang_glider
How gliding movement works
While gliding, you have two speeds: normal, and fast, which you get by pressing Shift. The server config sets how many blocks you fall and move forward per tick in each mode. In this pack, every one of these values is the mod default.[5]
- Hang Glider, normal: falls 0.55 and moves forward 0.025 per tick (hang_glider.normal_fall_movement, hang_glider.normal_forward_movement).[5]
- Hang Glider, fast: falls 0.675 and moves forward 0.05 per tick (hang_glider.fast_fall_movement, hang_glider.fast_forward_movement).[5]
- Reinforced Hang Glider, normal: falls 0.55 and moves forward 0.04 per tick (reinforced_hang_glider.normal_fall_movement, reinforced_hang_glider.normal_forward_movement).[5]
- Reinforced Hang Glider, fast: falls 0.675 and moves forward 0.08 per tick (reinforced_hang_glider.fast_fall_movement, reinforced_hang_glider.fast_forward_movement).[5]
So the fall speed is identical between the two gliders. The reinforced one gets more forward movement, in both normal and fast mode.[5]
Air resistance
With wind.allow_air_resistance enabled, you slow down over time while flying, and the value depends on the glider tier. A value of 1 means no resistance, and 0.5 means you move half as fast each tick. The Hang Glider uses 0.985 (hang_glider.air_resistance) and the Reinforced Hang Glider uses 0.99 (reinforced_hang_glider.air_resistance), so the reinforced one loses less speed.[5]
Durability
Both gliders lose durability while you glide, since hang_glider.consume_durability and reinforced_hang_glider.consume_durability are both on. The interval is 200 ticks for both (hang_glider.durability_use_interval, reinforced_hang_glider.durability_use_interval). There are 20 ticks in a second, so that's about 1 damage every 10 seconds of flight.[5]
Wind
Wind pushes you around unpredictably while you glide, and wind.allow_wind is on in this pack. The shared wind settings are all at the mod defaults.[1][5]
- wind.frequency is 0.15. Larger values mean gusts happen more often, and 0 removes wind.[5]
- wind.gust_size is 19. Larger gusts push you off your intended direction by greater angles.[5]
- wind.height_multiplier is 1.5. By default, the higher you are, the stronger the wind, and 0 removes the height effect.[5]
- wind.durability_multiplier is 0.7. The more worn your glider is, the more the wind affects it. At 1, a nearly broken glider is affected about twice as much as a new one.[5]
Each glider also has its own overall wind power. The Hang Glider is at 1.4 (hang_glider.overall_wind_power) and the Reinforced Hang Glider is at 0.75 (reinforced_hang_glider.overall_wind_power). The reinforced glider is therefore the steadier one in gusty air.[5]
Client camera options
These options only change how gliding looks and feels for you. The pack leaves them at the mod defaults.[6]
- auto_third_person_gliding is off. When on, it switches you to third-person while gliding.[6]
- gliding_camera_tilt is on. The camera tilts with your turn angle.[6]
- gliding_tilt_amount is 0.5 and gliding_tilt_speed is 0.4. Both accept values from 0.1 to 1.0.[6]
How do you progress through Hang Glider?
2 parts
Progression for this mod is a single upgrade step: you go from the Hang Glider to the Reinforced Hang Glider.[3]
Base tier: Hang Glider
The Hang Glider is where you start. It is the glider you upgrade, so keep it safe before you move on to the next tier.[3]
Upgrade tier: Reinforced Hang Glider
The Reinforced Hang Glider is made from the base glider. It uses the mod's own copy-components shaped recipe type and is listed as a mod recipe, so the pack has not replaced it with a custom one. Here is the exact in-pack recipe:[3]
Copy Components Shaped Recipe (hangglider)
Recipe id: hangglider:reinforced_hang_glider
This recipe copies the base glider's components onto the reinforced glider.
Which Hang Glider config options matter?
4 parts
Hang Glider has a client config and a server config, and in this pack every option in both files is left at the mod's default value. Nothing has been changed, so you can use the mod's default behaviour as a guide. Here are the options you're most likely to want to tweak.[5][6]
Glider movement
The normal glider and the reinforced glider each have their own movement settings in the server config. Movement values are blocks per tick, and the fast values apply while you hold Shift.[5]
- Normal glider: hang_glider.normal_fall_movement is 0.55 and hang_glider.normal_forward_movement is 0.025. While gliding fast, hang_glider.fast_fall_movement is 0.675 and hang_glider.fast_forward_movement is 0.05.[5]
- Reinforced glider, falling: reinforced_hang_glider.normal_fall_movement is 0.55 and reinforced_hang_glider.fast_fall_movement is 0.675, the same as the normal glider.[5]
- Reinforced glider, moving forward: reinforced_hang_glider.normal_forward_movement is 0.04 and reinforced_hang_glider.fast_forward_movement is 0.08, so it moves forward faster than the normal glider.[5]
- Air resistance: hang_glider.air_resistance is 0.985 for the normal glider and reinforced_hang_glider.air_resistance is 0.99 for the reinforced one. A value of 1 means no resistance.[5]
Durability
Gliding uses up durability on both gliders, because hang_glider.consume_durability and reinforced_hang_glider.consume_durability are both true. The interval options, hang_glider.durability_use_interval and reinforced_hang_glider.durability_use_interval, are both 200 ticks. At 20 ticks per second, that is about 1 damage every 10 seconds of flight. Lower the interval for faster wear, or turn off consumption if you'd rather never worry about it.[5]
Wind
Wind is on, since wind.allow_wind is true, and so is wind.allow_air_resistance. The overall strength starts at wind.overall_power (1) for all gliders. Each glider then has its own overall wind power: hang_glider.overall_wind_power is 1.4 for the normal glider and reinforced_hang_glider.overall_wind_power is 0.75 for the reinforced one.[5]
- wind.frequency: 0.15, how often gusts happen.[5]
- wind.gust_size: 19, how far gusts push you off your intended direction.[5]
- wind.height_multiplier: 1.5, so the wind gets stronger the higher you are.[5]
- wind.speed_multiplier: 0.4, so going fast reduces the wind effect.[5]
- wind.durability_multiplier: 0.7, so a more damaged glider is affected more by wind.[5]
- wind.raining_multiplier: 3, so wind is stronger while it's raining.[5]
Client options
The client config only covers camera behaviour. auto_third_person_gliding is false, so the game won't switch you to third person on its own. gliding_camera_tilt is true, so the camera tilts as you turn. The tilt is controlled by gliding_tilt_amount (0.5) and gliding_tilt_speed (0.4). If the tilt makes you dizzy, lower those or turn the tilt off.[6]
What changed in Hang Glider between versions?
1 part
Hang Glider is a small part of the pack's history, and the version trail is short. FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 ships Hang Glider 21.1.0, as the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.1.[2]
The mod has been in the pack for a long time. It was first included in FTB Skies 2 1.0.1 or earlier, so it has been there since the early releases.[2]
Mod changelog
- v21.1.0-1.21.1, released 2024-09-18: a port to Minecraft 1.21.1. This is the only entry in the mod's changelog that I have, and it is the version your pack uses.[2][7]
That entry only says the mod was ported to Minecraft 1.21.1. I can't confirm any other changes or new features in this release, so I won't guess at them.[7]
