Construction Sticks is a mod in FTB Skies 2 1.24.0, where it is version 1.5.0. Sticks that make building easier (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Construction Sticks?

1 part

Construction Sticks is all about making building faster. Hold a Construction Stick and you can extend blocks in any direction with a single click, so you skip placing every block by hand.[1]

The Sticks can also take upgrades. One example the quest book gives is making a Stick use power instead of durability.[1]

In this pack

This pack ships Construction Sticks 1.5.0. The mod has been in the pack since version 1.0.1 or earlier.[2]

The quest book covers it in "Faster Building" quest (titled Faster Building, with the subtitle Construction Sticks). That quest sits in the chapter "Useful Items & Tips", which is chapter 2 of 41 in the book and holds 29 quests.[1]

That chapter is a mix of handy items and tips. Other building helpers sit in it too, such as "Building Gadgets" quest and "Framed Blocks" quest, so it's a good place to compare your options for building faster.[1]

The quest sources I have don't show the quest's group or its exact position within the chapter, so I can't say which quests come right before or after it.[1]

How do you get started with Construction Sticks?

5 parts

Construction Sticks let you extend the side of a building that faces you, and you can add abilities with upgrade templates. Everything starts from plain crafting, so you can get going early. This is the order I'd follow.[3]

Make your first stick

Start with the Stickiest Stick, the Stickiest Stick. It is crafted in a normal crafting grid, and it lets you see how the mod feels before you commit better materials to a higher tier.[4]

The mod has an advancement described as "Craft any Construction Stick", so making any stick counts toward it.[3]

Move up a tier when you can

Higher tiers are the Copper Stick, Iron Stick, Diamond Stick and Netherite Stick. The mod has a settings section for every stick, and the stick's tooltip in game shows how many blocks it can place and how long it lasts.[3][4]

Learn the basics

The stick places blocks on the side of a building that faces you. You can change the placement restriction (horizontal, vertical, north/south, east/west or no lock) with a bound key, and another bound key opens the option screen.[3]

  • Undo: hold the bound undo key while looking at blocks to see your last placed blocks with a green border. Press the bound key while looking at one of them to undo the operation and get the items back.[3]
  • Containers: shulker boxes, bundles and many containers from other mods can supply building blocks to the stick.[3]
  • Offhand priority: if you hold blocks in your offhand, the stick places those instead of the block you're looking at.[3]

Add upgrades with templates

Upgrades come from templates. You put the template, your stick and the required item together in a Smithing Table. The required item is shown in each smithing recipe, so check the recipe viewer. To switch between upgrades, press the bound key while holding the stick or use the option screen.[3][4]

The Angel Stick Template is a fun one to try early. It lets you place a block in mid-air by right-clicking empty space while holding the block in your offhand. The maximum distance depends on the stick tier.[3][4]

Other templates to work toward

Tip: Every template has its own crafting recipe in this pack, and each template also has a smithing recipe for every stick tier. Look them up in the recipe viewer when you're ready to upgrade.[4]

How does Construction Sticks work?

5 parts

Construction Sticks isn't a machine mod. The sources describe no multiblocks, power networks or pipes, only a set of stick items that extend your building and the upgrade templates you apply to them. Point a stick at a building and it places blocks on the side facing you, up to a limit set by the stick's tier.[3]

Placement options

You change how a stick behaves with bound keys or an option screen. The keys are named Toggle Direction, Toggle Restriction, Toggle Upgrade, Toggle Random, Show Previous, Undo Operation and Open Stick Options. The Toggle Restriction key cycles the placement restriction: Horizontal, Vertical, North/South, East/West and No lock.[3]

  • Horizontal builds a horizontal column in front of the original block, and Vertical builds a vertical column.[3]
  • North/South and East/West build a row in that direction on top of the original block. No lock extends from any side of the original block.[3]
  • Match mode Exact only extends blocks that are exactly the same. Similar treats related blocks (dirt and grass types) equally.[3]
  • Random mode places random blocks present in your hotbar.[3]
  • Replace mode swaps out certain blocks like fluids, snow and tallgrass.[3]
  • Direction can place blocks facing the player, or with the same direction as the target block.[3]

Blocks in your offhand are placed instead of the block you're looking at. Shulker boxes, bundles and many containers from other mods can also supply building blocks for the stick.[3]

In this pack, Similar mode treats these blocks as one group: dirt, grass block, coarse dirt, podzol, mycelium, farmland, dirt path and rooted dirt. You can change the list in misc.SimilarBlocks.[3][5]

Undo

Hold the Show Previous key while looking at blocks to see your last placements outlined in green. Press the Undo Operation key while looking at any of them to undo that operation and get the items back. If you used the destruction upgrade, undo restores the blocks. The pack allows 3 operations to be undone, set by misc.UndoHistory.[3][5]

Tiers

Each tier has its own durability, angel distance, destruction limit and battery capacity. Every value below matches the mod default in this pack's config. Angel distance is the maximum placement distance with the angel upgrade, and destruction is the most blocks the destruction upgrade removes at once.[5]

  • Stickiest Stick: durability 59, angel distance 1, destruction limit 1, battery storage 5,000.[3][5]
  • Copper Stick: durability 131, angel distance 2, destruction limit 3, battery storage 10,000.[3][5]
  • Iron Stick: durability 250, angel distance 4, destruction limit 9, battery storage 25,000.[3][5]
  • Diamond Stick: durability 1,561, angel distance 8, destruction limit 25, battery storage 100,000.[3][5]
  • Netherite Stick: durability 2,031, angel distance 16, destruction limit 81, battery storage 200,000.[3][5]

Battery usage is 10 per block on every tier. Every stick has upgrading switched on through its upgradeable option. misc.MaxRange caps placement range at 100 for all sticks. It exists to prevent lag, not to balance the game.[3][5]

Upgrades

Upgrades come from templates. Put the template, your stick and the required extra item together in a Smithing Table to apply it. Check the Smithing Table recipes to see which extra item each upgrade needs. To switch between installed upgrades, use the Toggle Upgrade key while holding the stick, or the option screen.[3]

  • Angel Stick Template: places a block on the opposite side of the block (or row of blocks) you face. Right click empty space to place in midair, with the block you want in your offhand. Maximum distance depends on the tier.[3]
  • Destruction Stick Template: destroys blocks on the side facing you, but not block entities. The maximum count depends on the tier. Destroyed blocks vanish into the void, so use undo if you slip.[3]
  • Replacement Stick Template: exchanges blocks with the type you hold in your offhand, handy for swapping walls after placement.[3]
  • Battery Template: the stick uses stored energy instead of durability.[3]
  • Unbreakable Template: placing uses no durability and the stick never breaks.[3]
Watch out: A stick with the battery upgrade can only be charged if you have a mod that provides a way to do so. The sources don't name one for this pack.[3]

Here are the smithing upgrades for the Copper Stick. The pack has 25 smithing upgrade recipes for these sticks in total.[4]

Block entity rules and angel falling

Which blocks with block entities a stick may place is controlled by blockentity.BEList and blockentity.BEWhitelist. In this pack the whitelist option is false, so the list works as a blacklist, and it contains chiselsandbits, mekanism and waystones. Blocks from those mods can't be placed with a stick.[3][5]

misc.AngelFalling is false in this pack. When enabled, the angel upgrade places blocks below you while you fall more than 10 blocks, which can save you from drops or the void.[3][5]

How do you progress through Construction Sticks?

3 parts

The progression for Construction Sticks is built from a ladder of stick tiers and a set of templates that add abilities to a stick through smithing upgrades. You can pick up each part at your own pace.[4]

Unverified The sources here do not show any quest in this pack that involves this mod, so there is no quest-guided path to describe. Check the pack's quest book if you want to see whether it mentions Construction Sticks. Stick stats and what each template does in play are also not shown in the sources here.

The stick tiers

Every tier is a plain crafting recipe. The Stickiest Stick (Stickiest Stick) is the entry point, and above it you get the Copper Stick, Iron Stick, Diamond Stick and Netherite Stick. Each one has its own crafting recipe, so you don't have to upgrade through the lower tiers first.[4]

Applying templates at the smithing table

Once you have a template, you apply it with a smithing upgrade. The recipe takes a stick, the template and an extra item that depends on which template you use, and gives you back the same stick. Every stick tier, from the Stickiest Stick up to the Netherite Stick, has a smithing recipe for every template, so you can pick the abilities you want whatever tier you are on.[4]

Here are the smithing recipes for the Copper Stick as an example. The other tiers follow the same pattern with their own stick in place of the copper one.[4]

Tip: Because the templates are separate items and each tier is crafted directly, you can start with whichever stick your current resources allow and add templates as you reach the materials for them.[4]

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Construction Sticks?

2 parts

Construction Sticks has one quest in the pack, and it sits in the "Useful Items & Tips" chapter. That is chapter 2 of 41 in the quest book, a grab bag of 29 quests about handy items and tricks.[1]

Faster Building

The quest is "Faster Building" quest, and its subtitle is "Construction Sticks". It is an item-task quest, so you complete it by getting the item it asks for.[1]

The quest text explains the idea: the mod is all about making building much faster. While you hold a Construction Stick, you can extend blocks in any direction with just one click.[1]

It also mentions upgrades you can add to the Sticks. One example is making a Stick use power instead of durability.[1]

Other building quests in the same chapter

If you like building tools, the same chapter has a few more. "Building Gadgets" quest covers the Building Gadgets, "Placing Blocks In The Air" quest covers the Angel Block for placing blocks in empty space, and "Framed Blocks" quest covers Framed Blocks, which copy the texture of other blocks.[1]

Which Construction Sticks config options matter?

4 parts

The Construction Sticks settings in this pack live in one startup config file. Every numeric value in it that is annotated with a mod default matches that default, so the pack has not changed the numbers for the sticks.[5]

Per-tier stick stats

Each tier has its own durability, limit, angel and destruction options. In this pack, each value listed below matches its mod default.[5]

The angel option is the maximum placement distance with the angel upgrade, and setting it to 0 disables that upgrade. The destruction option is the block limit for the destruction upgrade, and 0 disables that one.[5]

Battery storage

Battery capacity also scales by tier, again at mod default: wooden_stick.batteryStorage is 5,000, copper_stick.batteryStorage is 10,000, iron_stick.batteryStorage is 25,000, diamond_stick.batteryStorage is 100,000 and netherite_stick.batteryStorage is 200,000. The batteryUsage option is 10 for every tier, for example wooden_stick.batteryUsage.[5]

Global options

  • misc.MaxRange is 100, the same as the mod default. It caps placement range for all sticks, and 0 means unlimited. The file says it is meant for lag prevention, not game balancing.[5]
  • misc.UndoHistory is 3, the mod default, so you can undo the last 3 operations.[5]
  • misc.AngelFalling is false. When enabled, an angel-upgraded stick places blocks below you while you fall more than 10 blocks, which can save you from drops or the void. In this pack it's off.[5]
  • Every tier has its upgradeable option set to true, for example netherite_stick.upgradeable. That means you can combine a stick with a stick upgrade in a smithing table.[5]

Block entity filtering and similar blocks

blockentity.BEList holds chiselsandbits, mekanism and waystones, and blockentity.BEWhitelist is false, so the list works as a blacklist. In practice, blocks with block entities from those mods are meant to be blocked from stick placement.[5]

misc.SimilarBlocks makes Similar mode treat these as the same block: dirt, grass block, coarse dirt, podzol, mycelium, farmland, dirt path and rooted dirt.[5]
