What is FTB Ocean Mobs?

Same as in the FTB StoneBlock 4 1.22.0 guide

This pack ships FTB Ocean Mobs at version 21.1.4, using the file ftboceanmobs-21.1.4.jar. It is part of the mod list in version 1.22.0.[1]

It isn't new either. The pack's mod list shows it was first included in version 1.0.0 or earlier, so it has been part of the pack since the early releases.[1]

Unverified What FTB Ocean Mobs adds in game (its mobs, their behavior and any settings) could not be confirmed from the material available for this guide, so none of that is described here.

How do you get started with FTB Ocean Mobs?

2 parts

Same as in the FTB StoneBlock 4 1.22.0 guide

There isn't a crafting-first path for this mod that I can confirm, so this section stays short. What I can tell you is what the mod adds, and the one setting this pack gives it.[2]

What the mod adds

FTB Ocean Mobs brings in a group of new mobs: the Abyssal Sludge, Abyssal Winged, Corrosive Craig, Mossback Goliath, Rift Demon, Rift Minotaur, Riftling Observer, Shadow Beast, Sludgeling and Tentacled Horror, plus a boss called The Rift Weaver.[2][3]

It also adds a few items and blocks. You'll see the Sludge Ball and the Abyssal Water Bucket, a spawn egg for each mob, and the blocks Abyssal Water, Energy Geyser and Sludge Block. There is also an enchantment called Rift Disruptor and an effect called Drowning Shadows. The language file only gives their names, so I can't tell you what they do.[2]

The one pack setting to know

The Rift Weaver boss fights inside an arena, and rift_weaver_arena_size controls how far horizontally the boss will roam from its start position. This pack sets it to 48, which is the same as the mod default. The allowed range is 16 to 128.[3]

Unverified No in-pack recipes for this mod's items were found in the sources, so there is no confirmed order of items to craft first.

How does FTB Ocean Mobs work?

5 parts

FTB Ocean Mobs is a mob mod, so there are no power, fluid or item-handling systems to wire up. The sources here confirm a handful of mechanics, and this section covers those.[4]

Rift mobs

The mod groups its creatures in a Rift mobs entity tag: Riftling Observer, Abyssal Winged, Corrosive Craig, Mossback Goliath, Abyssal Sludge, Shadow Beast, Rift Minotaur, Tentacled Horror, Rift Demon, The Rift Weaver and Sludgeling. Each one has its own spawn egg item.[4][5]

The Rift Weaver arena

The Rift Weaver is the boss in this list. How far it roams horizontally from its start position is controlled by rift_weaver_arena_size. The pack sets it to 48, which is also the mod default, and the allowed range is 16 to 128.[6]

Drowning Shadows

The mod adds a Drowning Shadows effect. It also ships a block tag named drowning_shadows_cure, which contains Sponge and Wet Sponge.[4][7]

Seismic block tags

Three block tags in the mod have seismic in their names. The sources show only their contents, not how the mod uses them.[8][9][10]

  • seismic_smashable: sandstone, crimson planks, blackstone, cobbled deepslate, deepslate bricks and everything in the c:glass_blocks tag.[9]
  • seismic_smashed: red sand, sand and gravel.[10]
  • seismic_cracked: crimson slabs, crimson stairs, blackstone slabs, cracked deepslate bricks and cracked deepslate tiles.[8]

Sludge items

Sludge Block drops itself when broken, and it still drops if it is caught in an explosion.[11]

The pack adds Sludge Ball to both the c:slimeballs and c:slime_balls item tags. Recipes that accept slimeballs through those tags will therefore take it.[12]

How do you progress through FTB Ocean Mobs?

2 parts

Same as in the FTB StoneBlock 4 1.22.0 guide

Here is the honest picture for this pack: the data I have for this mod does not lay out a tier ladder or a step-by-step progression path. I won't invent one. What follows is what the mod's own data files do confirm, which is useful to know when you run into these mobs.[13]

The rift mobs

The mod groups its hostile creatures in a single "rift mobs" tag. It contains the Riftling Observer, Abyssal Winged, Corrosive Craig, Mossback Goliath, Abyssal Sludge, Shadow Beast, Rift Minotaur, Tentacled Horror, Rift Demon, Rift Weaver and Sludgeling. The tag is just a list, so it does not tell you which of them is stronger or in what order you will meet them.[13]

Blocks and tags worth knowing

  • Sludge Block drops itself when broken, with no extra rolls or bonus drops.[14]
  • The mod has a block tag for curing "drowning shadows" that holds sponge and wet sponge. What the effect does exactly is not covered by the data I have.[15]
  • The "seismic smashable" tag covers sandstone, crimson planks, blackstone, cobbled deepslate, deepslate bricks and glass blocks.[16]
  • The "seismic smashed" tag covers sand, red sand and gravel.[17]
  • The "seismic cracked" tag covers crimson slabs and stairs, blackstone slabs, cracked deepslate bricks and cracked deepslate tiles.[18]

Unverified How the seismic block tags are used in gameplay, and how the rift mobs rank against each other, could not be confirmed from the available sources.

Which FTB Ocean Mobs config options matter?

1 part

Same as in the FTB StoneBlock 4 1.22.0 guide

There is only one config option for this mod in the pack's common config file, and it controls the Rift Weaver boss fight. It is the one to know if you plan to take that boss on.[3]

Rift Weaver arena size

rift_weaver_arena_size sets how far horizontally the Rift Weaver boss will roam from its start position. In other words, it is the size of the boss arena. This pack sets it to 48, which is the same as the mod default, so the pack has not changed it. The allowed range is 16 to 128.[3]

Tip: A larger value lets the boss roam further from where it starts, and a smaller one keeps it closer. If you edit the value, stay inside the 16 to 128 range the option allows.[3]
