What is Capability Proxy?

2 parts

Capability Proxy solves a classic modded headache: you need to reach several sides of a block, but the machine only exposes what it exposes. Point a proxy at a target block and the capabilities of that one side get extended to as many as five additional sides.[1]

Any kind of capability works, including items, fluids and energy. Block interactions are forwarded too, so you can even open the target's GUI through the proxy. If there is no valid target, the proxy sits in an inactive state. Need more than five sides? You can chain proxies to get even more.[1]

Proxy types

  • Regular proxies talk to their neighbours, while ranged proxies reach 16 blocks by default. That range is configurable, so the pack's value may differ from the mod default.[1]
  • The Entity Capability Proxy lets you interact with entities that have capabilities as if they were blocks. The mod page's example pipes items into a dropped Shulker Box, which needs Common Capabilities installed.[1]
  • The Item Capability Proxy lets you interact with an inserted item as if it were the block. The mod page's example is a tank item whose fluids get piped out with Integrated Tunnels, using the indicated side only.[1]

Who it's for and version

It's for anyone building compact automation, such as pipes, tunnels or energy lines, who wants more access points on a single block. The entity and item proxies arrived in version 2.1.0, and the pack ships version 2.1.10 (the 1.18.2 build). The mod requires the Cyclops Core library.[1][2]

Unverified Where Capability Proxy fits in the pack's progression is not confirmed by the available sources. Crafting recipes for the proxies are also not covered here, and whether Common Capabilities is included in the pack is unverified.

How do you get started with Capability Proxy?

4 parts

Everything in this mod starts with one block: the Capability Proxy. The ranged, item and entity versions all use it as an ingredient in their recipes, so make it first.[3]

First: the Capability Proxy

Crafting Shaped

Recipe id: capabilityproxy:capability_proxy

Point it at a block that has capabilities, and those capabilities become accessible from the proxy block. Items, fluids and energy all work, and block interactions such as opening a GUI are forwarded too. The target block has to be an immediate neighbour.[1][4]

The big win is that one side of the target block can be extended to as many as five additional sides. If five isn't enough, you can chain proxies for even more. With no valid target in front of it, the proxy sits in an inactive state.[1]

Next: the Ranged Capability Proxy

Recipe id: capabilityproxy:ranged_capability_proxy

The Ranged Capability Proxy works like the regular one, but its target is the closest applicable block within 16 blocks instead of a direct neighbour. Make it when the machine you want to reach can't sit right next to the proxy.[1][3][4]

Then: the Item Capability Proxy

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: capabilityproxy:item_capability_proxy

The Item Capability Proxy flips the idea around. You put an item inside it, and the block exposes that item's capabilities as if the block were the item. The project page shows a stored tank having its fluids piped out. Only the target side can pipe the contained item in or out.[1][4]

Last: the Entity Capability Proxy

The Entity Capability Proxy lets you interact with entities that have capabilities as if they were blocks. The target entity must be in the immediately neighbouring square.[1][4]

Tip: Some things have no capabilities by default, such as the Composter. The project page recommends the Common Capabilities mod, which adds capabilities to blocks that lack them. Its entity example, piping items into a dropped Shulker Box, also needs it.[1]

How does Capability Proxy work?

5 parts

The idea behind this mod is simple: you point a proxy at a block that has capabilities, and everything that block offers becomes reachable from the proxy block itself. That works for any kind of capability, like items, fluids and energy. Even block interactions are forwarded, so opening a GUI through the proxy works too.[1]

The proxy extends one side of the target block to as many as five additional sides. If five isn't enough, you can chain proxies to get even more sides. When there's no valid target block, the proxy sits in an inactive state.[1]

The proxy blocks

  • Capability Proxy: gives you access to the target block's capabilities. The target block has to be an immediate neighbour.[1][4]
  • Ranged Capability Proxy: does the same, but the target is the closest applicable block within 16 blocks, so it doesn't have to touch the proxy.[1][4]
  • Entity Capability Proxy: lets you interact with entities that have capabilities as if they were a block. The target entity must be in the immediate neighbouring square.[1][4]
  • Item Capability Proxy: you insert an item, and its capabilities are exposed through the block. The mod's own example has a tank inside the proxy, with its fluids piped out into the world using Integrated Tunnels.[1][4]

Range in this pack

The ranged proxy's reach is set by block.ranged_capability_proxy.range, and this pack sets it to 16. The config itself warns that high values can lag and/or crash your game, so be careful if you raise it.[5]

Entity and item proxies

The entity and item proxies were added in version 2.1.0 of the mod. For the item proxy, the contained item's capabilities are only accessible through the indicated side for piping in and out. In the mod's example that is the bottom side. This is also how you pipe in and out different proxied items.[1][4]

The mod's entity example pipes items into a dropped Shulker Box, and that example needs Common Capabilities installed. The mod page also suggests Common Capabilities for blocks that have no capabilities by default, such as the Composter.[1]

Crafting the proxies

Everything starts with the basic proxy. The other proxies are made from it.[3]

Other config options

The rest of the config file is housekeeping. This pack has core.general.analytics and core.general.versionChecker set to true, while core.general.crashOnInvalidRecipe and core.general.crashOnModCompatCrash are false. That means the recipe loader and the mod compatibility loader are not set to crash hard when they hit errors.[5]

How do you progress through Capability Proxy?

2 parts

Capability Proxy has a very short progression path in this pack. You craft a base item first, and every other item in the mod is a variant crafted from that base item. You make the base proxy, then pick the variants you need.[3]

The base proxy

Everything starts with the Capability Proxy. It has its own mod recipe, shown below.[3]

The variants

The variants are the Item Capability Proxy, the Entity Capability Proxy and the Ranged Capability Proxy. Each recipe takes a base Capability Proxy as its starting point, so craft a base proxy for every variant you want.[3]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: capabilityproxy:item_capability_proxy

This recipe is shapeless, so the ingredients can go anywhere in the grid.

Tip: Some variant ingredients are tags rather than single items, such as any chest, any gold ingot or any ender pearl. Whichever matching item you already have in storage will work.[3]

Which Capability Proxy config options matter?

2 parts

Capability Proxy has very few settings, and only one of them changes how you play. Everything lives in one file, and here is how this pack sets it.[5]

Ranged proxy range

The setting you'll most likely care about is block.ranged_capability_proxy.range. It's the maximum range in blocks that a ranged proxy can reach, and this pack sets it to 16. That matches the 16-block range the mod's project page describes for ranged proxies, which it also says is configurable.[1][5]

Watch out: The config file warns that high range values can lag and/or crash your game. If you raise the range, go up in small steps.[5]

Startup and safety options

The rest of the file covers startup behavior and error handling. This pack sets them as follows:[5]

Unverified The sources only show the values this pack uses, not the mod's built-in defaults for most of these options, so it isn't confirmed whether the pack changed any of them. The range of 16 does match the range described on the mod's project page.

What changed in Capability Proxy between versions?

Capability Proxy is on version 2.1.10 in All the Mods - Gravitas 4.0, built for Minecraft 1.18.2. It has been in the pack since Gravitas 2.6 or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the modpack.[2]

The mod's own changelog for 2.1.10 is very short. It says this is the initial 1.18.2 release, and it carries the usual reminder to back up your world before updating.[6]

Tip: Back up your world before updating the pack. The mod's changelog gives this reminder with every release.[6]

Unverified No pack changelog entries for Capability Proxy were available, so any changes to it between pack releases are not confirmed here.
