What is Cooking for Blockheads?

2 parts

Cooking for Blockheads adds a multiblock kitchen to the game. At its center is the Cooking Table, which shows you which food recipes you can make with the ingredients you have available right now. You can then start cooking with a single click.[1]

This is a quality-of-life mod for anyone who likes food, whether you run a big farm setup or just want to stop digging through chests for ingredients. It also supports Pam's Harvestcraft and many other food mods.[1]

What the kitchen can do

  • The kitchen is modular. Each component you add unlocks new abilities.[1]
  • Cupboards expand your storage, a sink gives you infinite water, and the oven makes cooking more efficient.[1]
  • A #NoFilter book shows all food item recipes, no matter which ingredients you have.[1]
  • Sorting options let you see the most nutritious foods you can make.[1]
  • Some players have even captured a Cow in a Jar to get infinite milk for the kitchen.[1]

In this pack

The pack includes Cooking for Blockheads version 26.1.2.4 for NeoForge. The mod needs Balm installed alongside it to work.[1][2]

Unverified Where the mod fits into this pack's progression is unconfirmed. The sources show no quests for it and no place on the ATM Star path, and the pack changes to its recipes or configs are not documented here.

How do you get started with Cooking for Blockheads?

5 parts

Cooking for Blockheads adds a modular, multiblock kitchen that shows you which food recipes you can make from the ingredients you have on hand. Here is the order I'd start in this pack: get the core block first, then add storage and connections.[1]

Make a Cooking Table

The Cooking Table is the heart of the kitchen. Its tooltip says it enables crafting abilities, and you use it to see what you can cook with your current ingredients and start cooking with a single click. Make it first.[1][3]

The Cooking for Blockheads II (Cooking for Blockheads II) has a tooltip that reads "Craft food with what you have available." Its tooltips also mention Shift-Click to craft a stack and Right-Click to lock an item.[3][4]

Add storage

The Kitchen Counter stores ingredients for recipes. The Kitchen Cabinet can be placed on the wall above kitchen blocks.[3][4]

Connect the kitchen

The kitchen is a multiblock built from several blocks. The Kitchen Connector joins kitchen blocks over corners. The kitchen floor connects them over distances, and the pack has recipes for it in several colors, such as Black Kitchen Floor.[1][3][4]

Upgrade when you're ready

Once the basics are down, you can expand. The sink provides water to recipes, and the oven enables smelting abilities. The Chicken Sink slowly produces eggs for recipes, and the Cutting Board provides a cutting board for recipes.[3][4]

How does Cooking for Blockheads work?

6 parts

Cooking for Blockheads is built around a modular, multiblock kitchen. Each component you add unlocks a new ability, and the whole setup shows you which food recipes you can make with the ingredients you have on hand. Here is how the pieces fit together, as far as the sources explain it.[1]

The Cooking Table and the recipe book

The Cooking Table is the heart of the kitchen, because it enables the crafting abilities. Open it and you can browse food recipes you can make right now, then cook with a single click.[1][3]

The recipe book item is Cooking for Blockheads II. Its tooltip says it lets you craft food with what you have available, and the recipe book tooltip says it shows food you can make right now. Its #NoFilter edition instead shows all food recipes, whatever you have in storage.[1][3][4]

  • For the recipes the book lists right now, the tooltip says to click a recipe, then click again to craft one, or Shift-Click to craft a stack.[3]
  • For smeltable recipes, the tooltip says Shift-Click cooks a stack. The book can also show a message that an oven is missing to cook.[3]
  • The mod also has tooltips reading "Right-Click to lock item", "Right-Click to unlock item" and "Scroll to select item". The sources do not say where each one appears.[3]
  • You can sort by hunger restored to find the most nutritious foods you can make.[1][3]
  • The book can also show messages that you are missing ingredients or missing tools to craft a recipe right now.[3]

How the kitchen connects

The tooltips describe how kitchen blocks link up. The Kitchen Connector tooltip reads "Connect kitchen blocks over corners", and the kitchen floor blocks, such as the Cyan Kitchen Floor, read "Connect kitchen blocks over distances".[3][4]

Many of the kitchen blocks come in colors. The recipe dump shows dye recipes for the colored cabinets, connectors, cooking tables, counters, fridges, ovens, sinks and chicken sinks, for example Black Oven and Blue Fridge.[4]

What each component provides

  • Kitchen Counter: its tooltip reads "Stores ingredients for recipes."[3][4]
  • Fridge: its tooltip reads "Stores ingredients for recipes."[3]
  • Oven: its tooltip reads "Enables smelting abilities." The Heating Unit tooltip reads "Allows to heat an oven using energy."[3]
  • Sink: its tooltip reads "Provides water to recipes." The project page describes it as a source of infinite water.[1][3]
  • Chicken Sink: its tooltip reads "Slowly produces eggs for recipes."[3][4]
  • Milk Jar: its tooltip reads "Provides milk to recipes." The Cow Jar tooltip reads "Slowly produces milk for recipes."[3]
  • Cutting Board: its tooltip reads "Provides a cutting board for recipes."[3][4]
  • Tool Rack: its tooltip reads "Provides tools to recipes."[3]
  • Ice Unit: its tooltip reads "Provides snow and ice to recipes." Salt Filter: its tooltip reads "Provides salt to recipes."[3]
  • Spice Rack: its tooltip reads "Stores spices and ingredients." Fruit Basket: its tooltip reads "Stores fruits for recipes."[3]
  • Preservation Chamber: its tooltip reads "Prevents the last item of a slot from being used up."[3]

A few blocks are not described as part of recipe handling. The Cookie Jar tooltip reads "Stores cookies for you." and the Coffee Machine tooltip reads "Provides essential life force." The Toaster tooltip reads "Magically turns bread into toast."[3][4]

Power, fluids and automation

The Heating Unit is the only block in the sources that mentions power. Its tooltip reads "Allows to heat an oven using energy.", and another tooltip line shows stored energy as a current and maximum value. The sources do not give the capacity, the energy use or the accepted energy type.[3]

The sink gives infinite water by default. A mod option can instead make it require water piped in. The oven also has an option that stops pipes and similar automation from inserting or extracting items. The sources do not say whether the pack changes either option.[1][3]

The mod's option tooltips mention an oven cook time multiplier and an oven fuel multiplier, and an option that makes the oven accept only cooking oil as fuel (the tooltip says this requires Pam's Harvestcraft). Another option, when enabled, gives kitchen counters twice as much inventory space. Whether any of these are set in the pack is not shown.[3]

Cow in a Jar

If the option is enabled, you can squish a cow into a Milk Jar by dropping an anvil on top. The cow then generates milk every tick, and a separate multiplier exists for Compressed Cow in a Jar from Ex Compressum.[1][3]

Toast

Toasting toasted bread again can turn it into charcoal, but only when no other mod adding toast is present. The item is labeled Very Toasted Bread (do not eat).[3]

Unverified The pack ships no config files for this mod, so the actual values of the options above are unconfirmed here. That includes whether the sink needs piped water, whether oven automation is disabled, the oven multipliers and whether large counters are on. The sources also do not give the exact range or size rules for linking kitchen blocks, the Heating Unit's energy numbers, or the Fridge, Oven and Sink recipes.

How do you progress through Cooking for Blockheads?

3 parts

Cooking for Blockheads doesn't have a strict tier ladder in this pack. What the pack data shows is a set of kitchen blocks you can craft, plus a lot of colour variants. Think of it as a build-your-kitchen path rather than a series of upgrades.[4]

Unverified No pack quests involving this mod were found, and the mod does not appear to be on the main quest path. If a quest does point you to it, treat that as unconfirmed here.

Where to start

The book Cooking for Blockheads II has its own in-pack crafting recipe, so it's a good first thing to make. The Cooking Table is also craftable on its own.[4]

Building out the kitchen

After that, the pack has crafting recipes for the rest of the base kitchen pieces. I can't confirm any required order between them, so pick what fits your build.[4]

Colour variants

Most kitchen blocks come in many colours, such as Black Oven, Blue Fridge and Black Cooking Table. The pack has shapeless dye recipes for these colour variants, and kitchen floors like Black Kitchen Floor have their own shaped recipes. Examples are shown below.[4]

What changed in Cooking for Blockheads between versions?

3 parts

All the Mods 11 0.8.0-beta ships Cooking for Blockheads 26.1.2.4, and the mod has been in the pack since 0.0.1 or earlier. The notes below come from the mod's own changelogs, starting at 26.1.1.2.[2][5]

26.1.1.2: the big feature drop

  • New Chicken Sink that provides eggs to recipes over time.[5]
  • New Coffee Machine with a model by HeckinChloe. In this release it had no functionality yet; functionality will be added once mods adding coffee are ported to 26.1.[5]
  • New Cookie Jar for storing cookies or other sweets, and a Chef Hat you can wear to look professional.[5]
  • Stacked cabinets: place a cabinet on another cabinet to transform it.[5]
  • New salt filter that provides salt to recipes.[5]
  • The Ice Unit now allows crafting of snowballs and ice cubes, and ice cubes can be crafted into ice blocks.[5]
  • The Cooking Table now shows the craftable count after you select a recipe, and the ingredient count when you hover an ingredient.[5]
  • Cooking now prioritizes ingredients from your inventory over kitchen storage.[5]
  • The tag c:foods/edible_when_placed was added to cookingforblockheads:foods, so items like cakes show up in the recipe book.[5]
  • Fixes for counter and fridge door rendering and for an error when crafting items that have no remainder. There were also some breaking API changes and performance improvements.[5]

26.1.2.1: Chicken Sink rework and polish

Tip: The Chicken Sink now needs either a chicken led to it or an egg hatched in it. The recipe no longer takes an egg upfront, so you place the egg inside with a right-click instead.[6]
  • The sink respects and reflects the Chicken Variant, and produces its regional eggs.[6]
  • The first egg in an empty sink hatches into a Baby Chicken, which grows up to an adult as long as it is fed.[6]
  • There is now a seed slot, used both to feed baby chickens and to increase the egg laying speed.[6]
  • Breaking a Chicken Sink releases the chicken.[6]
  • The Cooking Table now automatically saves your selected sort order.[6]
  • Fixes include the wrong craftable count for recipes with tool ingredients, recipes with missing ingredients showing up as options, the NoFilter Edition rendering in the wrong position on the Cooking Table, and the dyed chicken sink menu closing immediately.[6]
  • More fixes cover the oven door rendering in the wrong dye, oven tool items rendering too low, kitchen blocks visually overflowing their inventory slot, a 'no selection' text flicker, and the counter custom name saving differently from how it loads.[6]
  • Translation fixes cover wrong block language keys, incorrect item block translation keys, and subtitles showing up untranslated.[6]

26.1.2.2 to 26.1.2.4: bug fixes

  • 26.1.2.2 fixed wrong dye recipes for fridges and counters, and added data pack support for custom kitchen_item_provider blocks on Fabric.[7]
  • 26.1.2.3 fixed shift-clicking oven recipes still moving only a single item instead of a stack.[8]
  • 26.1.2.4, the version in this pack, fixed recipes for dying cabinets resulting in connectors instead.[2][9]
