Auroral is a mod in All the Mods 11 0.12.0-beta, where it is version 26.1.2-1.5.9. Harness the power of the Aurora Borealis in wintery north. Collect Liquid Aura in Glacial Basins to craft Shimmersteel tools and Shimmerweave armor with unique abilities. Features Nether-free brewing, magical flora, and a tiny pet Snowlette companion. (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Auroral?

2 parts

Auroral is a winter expansion that turns cold biomes from barren wastes into progression hubs. Everything revolves around the Aurora Borealis: you collect its energy, use it to craft Shimmersteel tools and Shimmerweave armor, and even brew potions without a trip to the Nether. This pack includes version 26.1.2-1.5.4.[1][2][3]

It's a great fit if you like building a base in snowy terrain and want a self-contained side progression with unique gear abilities. It's also useful if you'd like potions without visiting the Nether.[1]

The aurora loop

Auroras have a 33% chance to begin each night in cold biomes such as Snowy Plains, Ice Spikes, Frozen Ocean, Frozen Peaks, Grove and Snowy Taiga. While one is active, Glacial Basins exposed to the sky slowly fill with Liquid Aura, Shimmersteel gear repairs itself, Aurora Blooms appear on snow blocks, and Auroral Nautiluses drift in near players.[3][4]

  1. Wait for an aurora in a cold biome.[3]
  2. Harvest Frozen Petals from naturally spawning Aurora Blooms.[3][5]
  3. Craft a Glacial Basin, your main workstation, and place it outside so it can collect Liquid Aura during auroras.[3][5]
  4. Use the Liquid Aura to infuse iron into Shimmersteel.[3]
  5. Craft enhanced tools, weapons and armor.[3]

What the mod adds

  • Shimmersteel tools and weapons, including a bow and a spear, plus Shimmerweave armor (goggles, tunic, leggings and skates) with special abilities.[1][6]
  • The Cold Brewing Stand, which uses snowballs as fuel instead of Blaze Powder. Frozen Petals make an Awkward Potion from a Water Bottle just like Nether Wart.[5]
  • Cold-weather food and drinks such as Hot Cocoa and Frosted Cookies, plus Glow Leeks grown on Shimmering Ice.[6][7]
  • Creatures drawn from the lights: peaceful Auroral Nautili that you can tame, and the tiny Auroral Snowlette made from a Snow Golem.[8]
  • Decorations such as the Hearthwood Log and the Aurora Lantern.[6]
Tip: Auroras are random, so a lit Hearthwood Log within 32 blocks of you in a cold biome adds 15% aurora chance at nightfall. Up to three logs stack for 45%, which pushes the nightly chance to about 78% on default settings.[4]

Unverified The sources don't say whether this mod has quests or sits on the ATM Star path in this pack, so treat its place in the wider progression as unconfirmed.

How do you get started with Auroral?

6 parts

Welcome to Auroral! Everything in this mod runs on one event: the aurora. So the first steps are about getting ready for the lights, catching them in a basin, and turning that into your first Shimmersteel gear. Here is the order I'd do it in.[1][3]

Step 1: Find a cold biome and wait for an aurora

Head to a cold biome such as Snowy Plains, Ice Spikes, Frozen Ocean, Frozen Peaks, Grove or Snowy Taiga. Each night in those biomes has a 33% chance to start an aurora, and that is when the magic switches on.[3][4]

If you don't want to leave it to luck, a lit Hearthwood Log within 32 blocks of you adds +15% aurora chance at nightfall. Up to three logs stack for +45%, which gives about 78% on default settings.[4][9]

Step 2: Craft the Glacial Basin

The Glacial Basin is your main workstation, so make it first. Place it outside under open sky. During an aurora it slowly fills with Liquid Aura, which you need for every infusion.[3][5][10]

Step 3: Harvest Frozen Petals

While the aurora is active, Aurora Blooms appear on snow. Break a fully grown one (stage 3) to get Frozen Petals. A bloom you break too early drops nothing, and any blooms left over wilt at sunrise, so be patient and work fast once they mature.[11]

Frozen Petals are the key to the rest of the mod. You can also infuse them in the basin to make Aurora Shards.[1][5]

Step 4: Make your first Shimmersteel

Craft Unrefined Shimmersteel, then right-click the basin with it during an aurora to refine it into a Shimmersteel Ingot.[1][10]

Step 5: Upgrade your iron gear

Shimmersteel tools are made by upgrading iron tools at a Smithing Table, and the Smithing Template goes in that upgrade. Its base slot takes iron armor, weapons or tools, and its additions slot takes a Shimmersteel Ingot or Shimmerweave Fabric.[1][10][12]

Tip: Shimmersteel tools and Shimmerweave armor repair themselves while you wear or hold them during an aurora.[4]

    Optional next step: Nether-free brewing

The Cold Brewing Stand uses snowballs as fuel instead of Blaze Powder. Frozen Petals brew an Awkward Potion from a Water Bottle, just like Nether Wart, so you can start brewing without going to the Nether.[5]

    How does Auroral work?

    8 parts

Auroral's systems revolve around one night-time event, the aurora, and one workstation, the Glacial Basin. Once you understand how those two fit together, the rest of the mod (Shimmersteel, Shimmerweave, farming and brewing) falls into place.[3][13]

    The aurora event

Each night in a cold biome, an aurora has a 33% chance to begin. The mod's magical effects only switch on while one is active. Cold biomes are Snowy Plains, Ice Spikes, Frozen Ocean, Frozen Peaks, Grove and Snowy Taiga.[3][4]

    • Glacial Basins exposed to the sky slowly fill with Liquid Aura, the substance needed for Shimmersteel infusion.[4][13]
    • Shimmersteel tools and Shimmerweave armor repair themselves while equipped.[4]
    • Auroral Nautiluses drift in near players.[4]
    • Aurora Blooms appear on snow. Any left behind when the aurora ends wilt at sunrise, and mature ones drop Frozen Petals.[4][11]

    Boosting the odds with Hearthwood

A lit Hearthwood Log within 32 blocks of a player in a cold biome adds +15% aurora chance at nightfall. Up to three logs stack for +45%, which pushes the nightly chance to about 78% on default settings. A fourth log adds nothing, so three is the sweet spot.[4][9]

You light a log by right-clicking it with Flint and Steel, and a burnt-out log can be relit the same way. A lit log burns for 7 in-game days of chunk-loaded time (168,000 ticks). The timer only counts down while the chunk is active. The same log also gives Frostbite Immunity to players within 16 blocks.[9]

Hearthwood Logs also grow naturally in cold biomes.

    The Glacial Basin

The basin is your main workstation. It collects Liquid Aura under open sky during auroras, up to 3 levels, and you spend that aura by right-clicking the basin with an item.[10][13]

    1. Place the basin somewhere with a clear view of the sky, in a cold biome.[13][14]
    2. Wait for an aurora and let the basin fill with Liquid Aura.[13]
    3. Right-click the basin with the item you want to transform.[13]

    What the basin can infuse

    • Unrefined Shimmersteel becomes a Shimmersteel Ingot. This costs all 3 levels of aura at once, so the basin must be completely full.[1][13][14]
    • Frozen Petals become an Aurora Shard, at a cost of 1 aura level.[1][11]
    • Ice becomes Shimmering Ice, at a cost of 1 aura level.[1][13]
    • Woven Leather becomes Shimmerweave Fabric.[1]
Tip: Place several basins before an aurora starts. Keeping multiple basins collects more aura per event, and auroras last the whole night, so there is plenty of time to fill them.[13]

The ingot chain has two steps. First you craft Unrefined Shimmersteel with a crafting recipe, then you refine it in a full basin. Woven Leather is also a crafting recipe, and it is the input for Shimmerweave Fabric.[1][12][14]

    Smithing upgrades

Finished gear comes from the Smithing Table, not the basin. You need the Smithing Template, which takes iron armor, weapons or tools in the base slot, plus a Shimmersteel Ingot or Shimmerweave Fabric in the additions slot.[10][12][14]

      Cold Brewing Stand

The Cold Brewing Stand behaves exactly like the vanilla brewing stand, except that snowballs are the fuel instead of Blaze Powder. Frozen Petals take the place of Nether Wart for making Awkward Potions, so you can open the whole brewing tree without visiting the Nether.[5][15]

      1. Fill the stand with snowballs, up to 20.[15]
      2. Put Water Bottles in the bottom slots.[15]
      3. Add Frozen Petals to the ingredient slot.[15]
      4. Wait for the brew to finish, then continue the potion tree with standard ingredients.[15]

Shimmer Soil and Shimmering Ice farming

Right-click snow blocks, powder snow, dirt, grass or snow layers with a Shimmersteel Hoe to make Shimmer Soil. You can also right-click regular farmland with it to upgrade it, and the moisture is preserved. Crops on Shimmer Soil grow 3x faster at night and 5x faster during an aurora.[16][17]

Shimmer Soil is hydrated by water or Shimmering Ice within 4 blocks. Shimmering Ice never melts and glows at light level 8, which is enough to prevent mob spawning. That means an underground farm needs no water channels. Shimmering Ice is also the only substrate Glow Leeks can be planted on.[16][17]

      Crafting Shapeless

      • Frozen Petals
      • Wheat Seeds

      Recipe id: auroral:glow_leek_seeds

Glow-Leek Seeds are made by combining an ingredient with Wheat Seeds.

      Ender Blooms

Right-click an Aurora Bloom with an Ender Pearl and it becomes an Ender Bloom at the same growth stage, consuming the pearl. Ender Blooms never wilt at sunrise. They only advance through their growth stages on certain blocks, End Stone being one of them. Mature plants drop Aurora Ender Shards, and two of those craft back into an Ender Pearl, so a mature farm gives you renewable pearls.[11][19]

Unverified The in-game guide says Hearthwood Log burn time is configurable in the server config, but no config file for this mod is available in the sources here, so the exact option and its default in this pack are not confirmed.

How do you progress through Auroral?

      4 parts

Auroral doesn't hand you a checklist. Everything revolves around aurora events in cold biomes, and from there you work toward Shimmersteel gear and Shimmerweave armor. Here's the path as the pack sets it up.[4][12]

Unverified The sources here show no quest chapter for Auroral, and the mod is not on the ATM Star quest path as far as they show, so there is no quest-led order to follow. The steps below follow the mod's in-game guide and the pack's recipes. This site does hold All the Mods 11's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

      Stage 1: Get auroras going

Auroras have a 33% chance to begin each night in cold biomes. While one is active, the mod's magical effects switch on, and the rest of the progression depends on that. Aurora Blooms spawn on snowy surfaces during these nights and are described as the gateway to most of the mod's content.[4][11]

You can tilt the odds with a Hearthwood Log. Right-click it with Flint and Steel to light it. A lit log within 32 blocks of you in a cold biome adds +15% aurora chance at nightfall. Up to three stack for +45%, which brings the nightly chance to about 78% on default settings. A fourth log does nothing extra.[4][9]

Hearthwood Logs also grow naturally in cold biomes, and turn up in Snowy Taiga villages and frozen structures.

Harvesting a fully grown Aurora Bloom drops Frozen Petals and the living bloom, so you can replant it. Breaking an immature bloom yields nothing. Blooms left over when the aurora ends wilt at sunrise.[11]

      Stage 2: Shimmersteel

Shimmersteel infusion needs Liquid Aura, which slowly builds up during auroras. The pack has crafting recipes for Unrefined Shimmersteel and for the Smithing Template.[4][12]

The Shimmersteel tools and weapons each have a smithing recipe in the pack:[12]

One example: the other tools and weapons also use smithing recipes in the pack.

Tip: Shimmersteel tools repair themselves while equipped during an aurora, so they keep going on long cold-biome trips.[4]

        Stage 3: Shimmerweave armor

The Shimmerweave set also comes from smithing recipes: Shimmerweave Goggles, Shimmerweave Tunic, Shimmerweave Leggings and Shimmerweave Skates. The pack also has a crafting recipe for Woven Leather. Like the tools, the armor repairs itself while equipped during an aurora.[4][12]

          Useful extras along the way

          • The Aurora Lantern gives immunity to the Darkness effect while held in either hand, which helps in the Deep Dark or against the Warden.[20]
          • Tame an Auroral Nautilus by feeding it an Aurora Shard. Each shard has a 33% chance to tame, and a tamed nautilus can be ridden without a saddle.[8]

What changed in Auroral between versions?

          6 parts

All the Mods 11 0.8.0-beta ships Auroral 26.1.2-1.5.4, and the mod has been in the pack since 0.0.2 or earlier. Below are the notable changes from the mod's own changelogs, newest first. These notes come from the mod's changelogs, not from the pack's.[2]

1.5.4 (the version in this pack)

          • The Auroral Guidebook is now its own Auroral item with a proper recipe and icon. Crafting a book with a snowball still gives you the guidebook, and right-clicking it opens the Auroral guide.[21]
          • Because it is now a real Auroral item, it shows up in JEI lookups, search, KubeJS scripts and /give commands. Before, it was a generic GuideME book carrying the Auroral guide reference.[21]
          • The in-game guide was completely restyled: a large item picture and one line summary on every page, dividers between sections, colored headings, inline recipes and clickable cross-references.[21]
          • The guide table of contents now lists every page under the Auroral heading with the right icons, and the guide pages were moved to the folder GuideME expects. That stops the guide failing to load when other GuideME mods are installed.[21]

          1.5.2

          • Tooltips were added to every Auroral weapon, armor piece and functional block, so you can see what they do without opening the guide mid-fight.[22]
          • The Shimmer Spear is now a proper stabbing spear instead of a throwable trident. It uses the 26.1 spear combat style: long reach, a piercing stab, and hold right-click to charge, then release. Every hit still applies Frostbite, and during an aurora it deals bonus damage and a longer, stronger Frostbite.[22]
          • Shimmering Ice now hydrates vanilla farmland within 4 blocks, not just Shimmer Soil.[22]
          • The show_aurora_particles and play_aurora_ambient_sound client config toggles now actually work. Before, both were defined but never read.[22]
          • Shimmersteel Axes and Shovels got their usual tool abilities back (stripping logs, scraping copper, removing wax, making dirt paths, dousing campfires). Hearthwood Logs can be relit with flint and steel after they burn out.[22]
          • Drop fixes: Aurora Lanterns drop themselves when broken, Glow Leeks drop a leek plus bonus seeds at full maturity, and Aurora Blooms on snow drop Frozen Petals and the decorative variant again.[22]
          • The Hearthwood Log guide now states the Aurora Catalyst boost correctly: +15% aurora chance per lit log nearby, stacking up to three logs for +45%.[22]

          1.5.0

This release updated Auroral to NeoForge 26.1.2.22-beta and requires a matching loader version. It was internal cleanup with no gameplay changes.[23]

          1.3.3

          • The Shimmersteel Bow now hits about 20% harder than a vanilla bow at equal charge. Damage scales with draw strength, and it respects Power and other weapon-damage enchantments.[24]
          • The Shimmersteel Bow respects Infinity: an Infinity bow no longer consumes snowballs and can be drawn with an empty inventory.[24]
          • Shimmerweave Skates now trigger their Frost Walker effect while you stand still on an edge over water, and no longer take durability damage when turning lava into obsidian.[24]
          • Auroral Nautilus spawns are capped per local area: at most 2 nautili within about 64 blocks of any player before spawning pauses for that player.[24]

          1.3.2

Fixed a startup crash when Auroral was used with Jade 26.0.9 and newer.[25]

          1.3.0

          • Aurora Blooms can now grow on Ice, Packed Ice and Blue Ice as well as snow and Shimmering Ice, so frozen ocean surfaces count as spawn ground.[26]
          • Blooms placed on a snow layer now sit above it and keep the snow. Blooms in powder snow are snow-logged, and the powder snow is restored when the bloom is broken or wilts. A snow-logged bloom that dies decays back into powder snow.[26]
          • Natural bloom spawning now fires a block-place event, so claim-protection mods like FTB Chunks can stop blooms appearing inside other players' claims.[26]
          • You can empty the Glacial Basin output slot by sneak + right-clicking it with an empty hand, and automation can only extract from the output slot.[26]
          • Snow Angels now need both hands empty to be created, and are tagged as replaceable so you can place blocks into their space.[26]
