What is Variants&Ventures?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Variants&Ventures is a mob mod. It adds new variants of familiar undead mobs that spawn naturally in the biomes that suit them. You can also run into their spawners in dungeons and trial chamber structures, so exploring gets a bit more dangerous.[1]

The new variants

  • Gelid, a frozen zombie found in cold biomes. Its attacks inflict freezing, and it can come from spawners in dungeons under cold biomes and from trial spawners in Trial Chambers.[1]
  • Thicket, a jungle zombie found in jungle biomes. Its attacks inflict poison, and it can come from dungeon spawners under jungle biomes and from trial spawners.[1]
  • Verdant, a jungle skeleton found in jungle biomes. It fires poison-tipped arrows, and it can come from dungeon spawners under jungle biomes and from trial spawners.[1]
  • Murk, a sunken skeleton that lives underwater in warm ocean biomes. You can shear it for live and/or dead corals, and it can come from trial spawners in Trial Chambers.[1]

The mod also improves the spawning logic for Strays, Husks and Bogged, and adds a chance of monster spawners for each of them.[1]

Who it's for and how it fits the pack

This one is for you if you want more variety and challenge out in the world rather than a new machine or resource chain. It is built to work with other mods, so the variants will spawn in modded biomes too. Every feature can be switched on or off through the config file or the in-game config.[1]

The pack ships Variants&Ventures 1.0.26 for NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21.1. It has been in the pack since version 2.25 or earlier.[2]

Unverified The sources show no quests for this mod and no place for it on the ATM Star path. They also show no pack-specific changes to its config. Treat any pack-specific values as unconfirmed until you check the in-game config.

How do you get started with Variants&Ventures?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Good news: there's nothing to craft to get going with this mod. Variants&Ventures adds new mob variants that spawn naturally in the biomes they belong to, so your first steps are about knowing what you'll run into and where.[1]

You can also find their spawners in dungeons and trial chambers, which adds an extra layer of challenge when you go exploring.[1]

What you'll meet first

  • Gelid, a frozen zombie that inflicts freezing when it attacks. Look for it in cold biomes.[1]
  • Thicket, a jungle zombie that inflicts poison when it attacks. You'll find it in jungle biomes.[1]
  • Verdant, a jungle skeleton that fires poison-tipped arrows. It also lives in jungle biomes.[1]
  • Murk, a sunken skeleton that lives underwater in warm ocean biomes. It can be sheared for live and/or dead corals.[1]

The mod also changes how some vanilla variants spawn. Stray, husk and bogged get improved spawning logic, and each can also show up as a monster spawner.[1]

How the variants replace vanilla mobs

Most variants spawn in place of a vanilla mob. Husks can replace zombies in desert biomes, parched can replace skeletons in desert biomes, and bogged can replace skeletons in swamp biomes. Gelid can replace zombies in cold biomes, while strays can replace skeletons there. In the jungle, thicket replaces zombies and verdant replaces skeletons.[3]

Dungeon spawners work the same way. Spawners in dungeons can be swapped for the matching variant in the matching biome, and several variants can also appear on spawners in trial chambers.[1][3]

Tip: Every feature can be enabled or disabled in the config file or the in-game config. Each variant also has its own spawn chance, spawner chance and minimum Y level. For example, a minimum of 62 means the mob only spawns above the ocean Y level. That 62 is just the example from the option descriptions, not a confirmed value for this pack.[1][3]
Watch out: Gelid freezes you, while thicket and verdant poison you. Keep that in mind before you head into cold or jungle biomes, or into dungeons there.[1]

Unverified The sources I have don't show any crafting recipes or quests for this mod in this pack, and they don't show the pack's actual spawn chance or minimum Y level values. Check the in-game config to see what is set.

How does Variants&Ventures work?

4 parts

This one is a bit different from the machine mods. The sources for this mod describe mob variants, where they spawn, how spawners get swapped in and what they drop. They don't describe any machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item automation, so I won't invent any. What you get here is how the spawning and loot systems work.[1][3]

The mobs

  • Gelid is a frozen zombie variant that inflicts freezing when it attacks.[1]
  • Thicket is a jungle zombie variant that inflicts poison when it attacks.[1]
  • Verdant is a jungle skeleton variant that fires poison-tipped arrows.[1]
  • Murk is a sunken skeleton variant that lives underwater. You can shear it for live and/or dead corals.[1]

Each of the four has a spawn egg, for example Gelid Spawn Egg and Murk Spawn Egg, which is handy for testing them without hunting for a biome.[3]

Natural spawning

The mod also improves how stray, husk and bogged spawn. For most of these mobs the system works as a replacement: a variant takes the place of a vanilla mob in the right biomes. The in-game config text spells out the pairs. Gelid replaces zombies in cold biomes, thicket replaces zombies in jungle biomes, and husk replaces zombies in desert biomes. Verdant replaces skeletons in jungle biomes, stray replaces skeletons in cold biomes, parched replaces skeletons in desert biomes, and bogged replaces skeletons in swamp biomes.[1][3]

Every one of those mobs has its own spawn chance option and its own minimum Y level option. The descriptions use 80% and Y 62 (above the ocean level) as examples, but those are only examples, not the pack's values.[3]

Here is which biomes count for each mob, going by the mod's biome tags:[4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11]

  • Gelid and stray: the frozen ocean, deep frozen ocean, frozen peaks, frozen river and ice spikes biomes, plus a snowy collection. That collection covers snowy taiga, grove, snowy slopes, jagged peaks, snowy plains and snowy beach. Several modded snowy biomes are also listed as optional entries.[5][9][12][13][14][15][16][17]
  • Husk and parched: the desert biome, plus optional modded desert biomes and common desert tags.[6][8][18]
  • Thicket and verdant: vanilla jungle biomes, plus optional modded jungle tags.[10][11][19]
  • Bogged: swamp, mangrove swamp and mushroom fields, plus optional modded swamp and mushroom tags.[4][20][21]
  • Murk: lukewarm ocean, deep lukewarm ocean and warm ocean.[7]

Murk works a little differently from the rest. It isn't a swap-in. It is added to those ocean biomes through a spawn entry in the monster category, with a weight of 4 and a group size of exactly 1.[22]

Tip: Because the biome lists include optional modded entries, variants can show up in modded biomes of the matching type. The mod's page says it is designed to work with other mods and that mobs spawn in modded biomes.[1][14][18]

Spawners

You can also run into variant spawners. In dungeons, the swaps follow the same pattern as natural spawns: gelid spawners replace zombie spawners in cold biomes, thicket spawners replace zombie spawners in jungle biomes, and husk spawners replace zombie spawners in desert biomes. Verdant spawners replace skeleton spawners in jungle biomes, stray spawners replace them in cold biomes, parched spawners replace them in desert biomes, and bogged spawners replace them in swamp biomes.[3]

Trial chambers get their own options. Gelid, murk, thicket and verdant spawners can all appear there. The mod's page lists trial spawners, not dungeon spawners, for murk.[1][3]

Each spawner type has its own chance setting too, for example the chance that a gelid spawner takes the place of a zombie spawner in cold biomes.[3]

Drops

Gelid and thicket share the same loot layout. You always roll for Rotten Flesh with a small random count, and looting can add a little extra. If a player kills them, there is a second roll that gives one of Iron Ingot, Carrot or Potato. Without looting that roll has a base chance of 0.025, and looting raises it. The potato comes out cooked if the mob was on fire or you killed it with a weapon that smelts loot.[23][24]

Murk drops Arrow and Bone, each with a small random count, and looting can add a little extra of each.[25]

Verdant has the same arrow and bone drops. When a player kills it, it can also drop a Tipped Arrow of poison, and looting can add a little more.[26]

Unverified The default values for spawn chances, spawner chances and minimum Y levels, and whether this pack changes any of them, are set in the mod's config (the in-game config screen), and the sources here do not show them. The same goes for the exact contents of the murk shearing loot tables, which are the data files behind the coral drops.

How do you progress through Variants&Ventures?

3 parts

This section sticks to what the mod's own data files confirm: mob drops, shearing and biome collections. Those files are the parts of Variants&Ventures I can show you for this pack.[12][13][23][24][25][27][28]

Mob drops

  • Murk has a separate pool for Arrow and for Bone. Each one gives a random count that can be zero, and looting can add up to one extra.[25]
  • Gelid drops Rotten Flesh in a random count that can be zero, with looting adding up to one extra.[23]
  • Thicket uses the same rotten flesh drop as Gelid: a random count that can be zero, with looting adding up to one extra.[24]

Gelid and Thicket also have a bonus pool that only rolls when a player kills them. It gives one of Iron Ingot, Carrot or Potato. The chance is 0.025 without looting. With looting it is 0.035 at the first level, plus 0.01 for each level above the first.[23][24]

Tip: If the mob is on fire when it dies, or you kill it with a weapon that smelts loot, the potato drop comes out already smelted. That's handy if you want baked potatoes.[23][24]

Shearing

Shearing the purple Murk variant rolls a pool where each pick is either Bubble Coral or Dead Bubble Coral, one piece at a time.[27]

The red Murk variant works the same way, but with Fire Coral or Dead Fire Coral.[28]

Biome collections

The mod defines a frozen biome collection containing deep frozen ocean, frozen peaks, frozen ocean and frozen river. It also defines an ice collection containing only ice spikes. These files alone don't tell you what spawns in those biomes.[12][13]

What changed in Variants&Ventures between versions?

2 parts

All the Mods 10 8.2 ships Variants&Ventures 1.0.26 (the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.1). The mod has been in the pack since All the Mods 10 1.7 or earlier. Here is what changed along the way, release by release.[29]

Pack releases that updated the mod

  • All the Mods 10 2.30 moved the mod from 1.0.8 to 1.0.9. This fixed a bug and log spam related to entity spawns, and removed the default resource pack that added custom animations to the Murk.[30][31]
  • All the Mods 10 2.31 updated to 1.0.10, which fixed a server crash related to entity spawns.[32][33]
  • All the Mods 10 2.42 updated to 1.0.11. It fixed a crash related to the latest YACL and a crash from arrows shot by non-bow weapons (caused by other mods). Spawn replacement was improved so mobs can spawn with armor and items like the originals, the thicket sound effect volume was lowered, and mobs now trigger vanilla advancements such as Monster Hunter when killed.[34][35]
  • All the Mods 10 2.47 updated to 1.0.13, which fixed Murk spawns in trial chambers.[36][37]
  • All the Mods 10 4.1 updated to 1.0.14, which fixed vanilla advancements.[38][39]
  • All the Mods 10 4.6 updated to 1.0.17. The mod's changelog lists a port to 1.21.7/1.21.8 and an internal refactor for this version.[40][41]
  • All the Mods 10 4.11 updated to 1.0.18, which fixed thicket trial chamber spawners and added zh_tw translations.[42][43]
  • All the Mods 10 4.15 updated to 1.0.19. The mod's changelog lists a port to 1.21.9/1.21.10 and internal cleanup. It also carries a breaking config change (see the warning below).[44][45]
  • All the Mods 10 5.5 jumped from 1.0.19 to 1.0.22. The only notes available for the jump say spawn egg colors were fixed and translations were updated.[46][47]
  • All the Mods 10 6.0 updated to 1.0.23, which fixed a projectile owner incompatibility with the vanilla /execute on origin command.[48][49]
  • All the Mods 10 7.0 updated to 1.0.24, which fixed armor rendering on all mobs.[50][51]
  • All the Mods 10 7.1 updated to 1.0.26, which fixed a crash related to the Not Enough Trials mod. This is the version you have in 8.2.[29][52][53]
Watch out: Version 1.0.19 (added in All the Mods 10 4.15) is a breaking change for configs: they are now connected to one variantsandventures json file. If you carried settings over from an older pack version, keep that in mind.[44][45]

Older mod-only changes

A couple of earlier releases appear only in the mod's own changelogs. Version 1.0.6 disabled experimental animations by default, fixed spawn eggs and improved compatibility between minor Minecraft versions. Version 1.0.8 fixed a crash related to world generation of trial chambers, and the pack was already on it before 2.30.[30][54][55]
