What is Macaw's Windows?

1 part

Macaw's Windows is a decoration mod that is all about windows. The windows can be opened, closed or locked. It also adds blinds, mosaic glass, mosaic glass panes, one way glass, parapets/sills, gothic windows, shutters, curtains and arrow slits, plus a few more things.[1]

The pack ships Macaw's Windows 2.4.2 for NeoForge 1.21.1, and it has been in the pack since version 1.0 or earlier.[2]

Where it sits in the quest book

The pack's quest book has a quest called "Macaw's Windows" quest in the "Building Tips" chapter. It comes right after the glass quest, a quest in "Building Tips", which asks for Glass. That glass quest comes after "Blocks!" quest, which in turn follows the chapter's opening quest, "Building Tips!" quest.[3]

The quest's own text lists windows, window panes, shutters, curtains, blinds and even parapets, and it admits it doesn't know what a parapet is. The chapter has 67 quests, and I can only see part of them here. Whatever comes after the Macaw's Windows quest is in the quest book itself.[3]

There is also a separate quest, "Macaw's Mods" quest, which covers the developer's decor mods in general and mentions windows, pathways and drawers. It comes after "Decor Mods!" quest, which follows "Decoration!" quest.[3]

How do you get started with Macaw's Windows?

4 parts

Macaw's Windows is all about windows that can be opened, closed or locked. It also adds blinds, mosaic glass, one way glass, parapets, shutters, curtains and arrow slits. Here is a sensible order for your first crafts.[1]

In the quest book, the Building Tips chapter has a quest called "Macaw's Windows" quest. It comes after the glass quest a quest in "Building Tips", which in turn comes after "Blocks!" quest. The quest text lists windows, window panes, shutters, curtains, blinds and parapets. The chapter also has a "Macaw's Mods" quest quest, which follows the Decor Mods quest.[3]

Step 1: the base items

The window recipes in this pack are built on three base items: Window Base, Window Half Pane Base and Window Four Pane Base. Resizeable and Pane windows use the Window Base. Rectangle windows use the Half Pane Base. Four Pane windows use the Four Pane Base. Make the base that matches the style you want.[4]

Both steps can be undone. A Four Pane Base turns back into a Half Pane Base, and a Half Pane Base turns back into a Window Base. If you overshoot, you can switch back.[4]

Step 2: your first windows

With a base in hand, wood and stone windows are quick to make. Acacia is the example here: you can make the resizeable Resizeable Acacia Window or the Acacia Pane Window. Andesite follows the same pattern, with Resizeable Andesite Window and Andesite Pane Window. The recipe blocks below show the exact in-pack crafts.[4]

Step 3: recipes this pack changed

The pack changes several recipes, so don't rely on what you remember from other packs. The metal and quartz windows are pack-changed, including Resizeable Metal Window and Metal Four Window. The Window Hammer, the Window Key, the Metal Curtain Rod and the Golden Curtain Rod are pack-changed too. The recipe blocks below show the in-pack versions.[4]

Once the windows are in, finish them off with Acacia Blinds, Acacia Curtain Rod, Acacia Parapet, Acacia Louvered Shutter or Acacia Shutter. A colored mosaic glass block, such as Blue Mosaic Glass, can be crafted into panes, here Blue Mosaic Glass Pane. One Way Glass also has a pane version.[4]

How does Macaw's Windows work?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Macaw's Windows is a decorative mod, and the sources describe it that way. It adds windows, mosaic glass, blinds, shutters, curtains, parapets and more. The sources don't mention machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item automation for it, so there's nothing to cover on those. The mechanics that do exist are about how the blocks behave and how you craft them.[1]

Opening, closing and locking

The project page says the windows can be opened, closed or locked. The mod's tooltips describe a hammer and a key, and both work with a right click on a window.[1][5]

  • The hammer: right click on a window to change its shape.[5]
  • The key: right click on a window to lock it.[5]

How window crafting is organised

In this pack, each window family has its own base item. Pane windows and the resizeable windows use Window Base, four pane windows use Window Four Pane Base, and the rectangle windows use Window Half Pane Base. The recipe dump labels these as mod recipes, and nothing in it shows the pack changing them. Here are some examples from the acacia set:[6]

Shutters, blinds, curtain rods and parapets don't use a window base. Their recipes are built from ordinary materials such as slabs, logs, sticks and trapdoors. Take Acacia Shutter and Acacia Blinds, for example.[6]

How do you progress through Macaw's Windows?

6 parts

In the pack's quest book, "Macaw's Windows" quest sits in the Building Tips chapter. It comes after the a quest in "Building Tips" quest, which comes after "Blocks!" quest, which follows "Building Tips!" quest. The quest describes the mod as windows, window panes, shutters, curtains, blinds and even parapets.[3]

It is also one of eight Macaw quests that "Completed Macaw" quest waits on. That quest is a simple checkmark that says you got one of everything from Macaw's Mods.[3]

The sources show no tier system for this mod. What the in-pack recipes do show is a natural order to work in: bases first, then window styles, then the extras. Here it is in that order.[4]

Step 1: the bases

Almost every window starts from one of three bases: Window Base, Window Half Pane Base and Window Four Pane Base. The two recipes below show how you move from one base to the next, and each step also has a revert recipe so you can go back.[4]

Crafting Shapeless

The first step up from the Window Base gives 2 Half Pane Bases per craft.

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: mcwwindows:window_centre_bar_base

The second step gives 2 Four Pane Bases per craft.

Step 2: wood and stone windows

Each base pairs with a wood or stone material to give a different window shape. Acacia shows the pattern, and Birch and Andesite follow the same one.[4]

The planks versions, like Resizeable Acacia Planks Window, follow the same pattern. For a stone look there are the Andesite windows such as Resizeable Andesite Window. Blackstone Gothic Window and Blackstone Brick Arrow Slit have their own recipes, shown below.[4]

Step 3: metal and quartz, where the pack changes things

The Metal and Quartz window families are marked as changed by the pack, so the recipes you see in game are this pack's versions. They still follow the same base pattern: Resizeable Metal Window and Resizeable Quartz Window make 4 per craft, while the pane, rectangle and four pane versions make 8.[4]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Macaw's Windows?

3 parts

In this pack, Macaw's Windows shows up in the "Building Tips" chapter of the quest book. It appears twice: as its own quest, and as one of the requirements for a wrap-up quest for all the Macaw mods.[3]

The Macaw's Windows quest

"Macaw's Windows" quest comes right after a quest in "Building Tips". That glass quest comes after "Blocks!" quest, which comes after the chapter's opening quest, "Building Tips!" quest. The quest text sums the mod up as windows, window panes, shutters, curtains, blinds and even parapets. It is an item quest.[3]

It sits in a group of glass quests that all branch off the same glass quest. The others are a quest in "Building Tips", "Railcraft Glass" quest, "XyCraft Glass" quest, "Crystalix" quest, "Glassential" quest and "Chipped Glass" quest.[3]

The Macaw's Mods group

The Macaw mods also have their own group. "Macaw's Mods" quest comes after "Decor Mods!" quest, which comes after "Decoration!" quest. Its text asks if you can craft everything from the developer. These quests branch off it:[3]

"Macaw's Furniture" quest also comes after "Decor Mods!" quest. "Macaw's Lights and Lamps" quest sits in the lighting group instead, after a quest in "Building Tips", which comes after "Decoration!" quest. The Windows quest is on the glass path, as covered above.[3]

The final Macaw quest

"Completed Macaw" quest is a checkmark quest. It needs eight quests done first: Doors, Fences and Walls, Roofs, Paths and Pavings, Trapdoors, Lights and Lamps, Furniture and Windows. The quest text says you got one of everything from the Macaw mods, so Windows is part of that set.[3]

Tip: Finishing the Macaw's Windows quest is one of eight steps toward "Completed Macaw" quest. The quest book does not need you to do the rest first, so you can pick it up as soon as you have a glass block.[3]

What changed in Macaw's Windows between versions?

3 parts

All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 ships Macaw's Windows 2.4.2, and the mod has been in the pack since 1.0 or earlier. The changes below come from the mod's own changelogs for 2.4.0, 2.4.1 and 2.4.2.[2][7][8][9]

2.4.0: the big behaviour update

This release changed how a lot of the mod feels to use. If you remember older behaviour, these are the changes to know about.[9]

  • Windows no longer cycle open when you use them. They now open based on where you aim your mouse (left or right).[9]
  • Curtains no longer have collision.[9]
  • Blinds are now placed open instead of closed.[9]
  • Shutters now use the Windows open sound, and they have a better hitbox that covers only the model.[9]
  • If you hold a Shutter and click on a Shutter, it no longer opens or closes. That makes it easier to place one on top of another without toggling it.[9]
  • The Window Four Pane Base Item and Window Half Pane Base can now be reverted in crafting, and Window Base Items are now grouped in crafting.[9]
  • Golden model filenames changed to Gold, and Metal to Iron.[9]

The same release fixed a long list of bugs, including curtains not attaching to glass panes, the Iron Shutter taking too long to break and not dropping when broken, and shutters clipping when two open in the same direction. It also fixed the Windows Hammer not saving changes on ConnectableWindow and GothicWindow, the Window Hammer not working as before, and shutters not moving when clicked in some versions. Translations were added or updated for several languages.[9]

2.4.1

A small fix: curtains placed against a solid block no longer make the face of that block see through.[8]

2.4.2: the version in this pack

This is the version you have in 2.0.4. It fixed sound distance fading not working for Windows, Gothic Windows and Blinds, and it fixed curtain lighting looking unevenly distributed. It also added a pt_br translation and updated ru_ru.[2][7]
